Chapter Seven: Let's Go to Sleep Early

As Xiao Cheng was pulled away by Bai Lu, the wooden stick was about to hit Liu Guanggun on the back of the head, just a hair's breadth away.

My hand was taken away by the warm softness.

After hearing her explanation, when the surrounding gazes were no longer filled with fear and disgust, it seemed as if a seed had fallen into his heart and taken root in a gloomy corner.

It was an experience I'd never had before, and I can't quite describe how I felt, but it wasn't the kind of rejection I used to feel.

Even sleeping in Bailu's room became natural, as if it were the proper thing to do.

Yes, because the storage room was leaking, although it has been repaired, the mosquito net has been washed, but the bed board is still wet.

Bai Lu lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep, feeling as if she had forgotten something.

"That's right!"

She remembered something she had forgotten.

She got up, stepped over Xiao Cheng who was sleeping outside, and ran to the large bag in the corner to rummage through it.

A short while later, he took his things, opened the door, and went out.

Xiao Cheng frowned as he watched the door open and close. Why didn't they ask him to move aside, but instead stepped over it?

Why are you out so late at night instead of sleeping?

"Knock knock knock—"

Xiao Wei was applying medicated wine to his knees when he heard a knock on the door. His hand trembled, and he hurriedly pulled down his trouser leg.

Put the medicinal wine back in the drawer and go open the door.

What are you doing here?

Upon seeing that it was the White Dew season, the little guy's tone wasn't very good, and there was still a hint of disappointment in his eyes that he couldn't hide.

Bai Lu sniffed, stared at Xiao Wei and looked him up and down, then took out the new schoolbag hidden behind her back, walked past him, went into the house, and put it on the wooden table.

"Your new schoolbag."

On the back of the chair in front of the wooden table hung an old cloth bag with crooked stitches, containing textbooks.

Bai Lu glanced at it once, then beckoned to Xiao Wei, who was staring blankly at the new schoolbag, "Come here."

"Let me see where you're injured."

Xiao Wei had assumed they were going to look at the new schoolbag and had even taken a step when he heard the sound, so he immediately stopped.

He shook his head: "I'm not injured."

Bai Lu stretched out her finger and tapped the table lightly, saying softly, "I smell medicinal wine. If I'm not mistaken, it should be liniment."

When her face was covered by a sack, she couldn't see anything, but she could hear the sound of heavy objects falling to the ground.

Did the little guy get beaten up?

Xiao Wei felt a chill run down his spine from her scrutinizing gaze, but he stubbornly refused to admit it.

"May I open the drawer and take a look?" Bai Lu asked him, her fingers already starting to pull the drawer open.

“If you get hurt and don’t tell me, you won’t be able to clean the wound, and it will get worse. I can help you, or your brother can help you.”

"No need!" Xiao Wei shook his head firmly to show his determination.

But he didn't stop Bai Lu from opening the drawer.

"It really is liniment..."

The liniment is produced in Hong Kong and is mainly used to treat rheumatic pain, relax muscles and tendons, promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis and promote tissue regeneration, and treat sprains and strains.

Bai Lu's grandfather was a military officer, and his family had liniment, which was a gift from his old friends.

When she was a child, her grandfather would use this to wipe her bumps and bruises during training, and she still remembers it vividly.

However, this thing was not cheap in the 1990s, and ordinary people could hardly afford it.

Unexpectedly, Xiao Wei actually had it.

“That was left to me by my mother,” Xiao Wei explained unusually. He even added, seemingly afraid that Bai Lu might misunderstand, “It can also be used if my brother gets injured.”

Bai Lu raised an eyebrow, chuckled, and beckoned to him again: "Come here, let me see where you're hurt. If you can't handle it, I'll call your brother over to check you out."

As expected, Xiao Cheng is a living devil.

Even a seven-year-old was afraid of him, and without saying a word, he came over: "I only bumped my knee, there's no other injury."

Seven-year-old Xiao Wei is already a little man, so Bai Lu didn't dare to lift his clothes. She just tapped his body with her fingers through his clothes, one tap on the left and one on the right.

By observing his micro-expressions, we could determine if there were any other injuries. Fortunately, apart from his knees, there was only a bruise on his shoulder and neck, which must have been caused by a kick.

The clothes that had been taken off at the foot of the bed all had a large muddy footprint, and Bai Lu's eyes welled up with tears.

This is... the injury I sustained for her.

"hiss!"

Xiao Wei was suddenly pressed hard on the shoulder, and he instinctively pulled back in pain, frowning and glaring at Bai Lu.

Bai Lu sheepishly withdrew her hand: "I didn't mean to. I heard that pressing like this helps the bruises on the wound to dissipate faster, allowing it to heal more quickly and recover to a healthier state."

Xiao Wei would never believe her.

Bai Lu put the medicinal wine back in the drawer, raised her hand and gently rubbed the little guy's head: "In the future, if you encounter someone you can't beat, run away. Children are not as strong as adults. If you get seriously injured, you may not grow tall. You don't want to be much shorter than your brother, do you?"

Upon hearing the previous statement, Xiao Wei wanted to refute it, but as soon as he uttered the word "brother," he immediately swallowed back the words he was about to say.

Bai Lu has finally found a clever way to subdue him.

"Alright, it's late, go to bed early, you have school tomorrow."

Xiao Wei stared at Bai Lu's retreating figure, hesitant to speak, his eyes filled with undisguised joy. He lingered over her new schoolbag several times, back and forth, just as she was about to walk out the door.

She gritted her teeth, and a hesitant voice escaped her lips: "Um, is the backpack for me?"

Bai Lu turned around and smiled gently: "Of course, you have to study hard, your schoolbag was bought with your brother's money."

After saying that, he gently closed the door.

Turning around, she saw Xiao Cheng leaning against the door, arms crossed, in a relaxed posture. His deep, ocean-like eyes held a hint of indifferent languor as he gazed at her with a melancholy look.

A hint of amusement lingered at the corners of his mouth.

"Clang, clang, clang..."

The clock on the wall struck ten.

Bai Lu's head was buzzing, and she suddenly felt a little cold. Her smile widened: "It's late, let's go to sleep early too."

He then dashed back to his room.

It runs faster than a rabbit.

The bed is large enough for two people to sleep in, or even if each person has their own blanket, it would be more than enough.

White Dew, however, curled up like a rice dumpling, huddled at the very back, almost as if it were about to crawl into the wall.

Good heavens!

She had never been in a relationship before, let alone slept in the same bed with a man. She was just a little nervous and scared. No, no, no! She wasn't nervous or scared!

I'm just not used to it!

Perhaps because it was rolled up too thickly, when the man lay down, he only heard a slight creaking sound and didn't feel much sinking. Bai Lu blinked.

I felt inexplicably relieved.

What she was worried about was the weight-bearing capacity of the wooden plank bed, and yes, that's right!

Bai Lu still felt lingering fear when she recalled their first meeting, when she was almost hypnotized by Xiao Cheng.

Looking at his profile, you can tell he's no ordinary person.

Entering his memories was even more shocking.

If it weren't for the safety of her father and grandfather, she wouldn't have risked her life to discover a lesser-known side of him. It turns out that all darkness has a source.

Xiao Cheng should have had a happy family, a wonderful childhood, a loving mother and a strict father, just like any other person. His parents ran a wonton shop on the street, and the business was quite good.

Everything fell apart when he was three years old.
