Chapter Ten: A Gift from a Big Shot

"Does she owe her sister-in-law money?"

"How could my sister-in-law, a frail woman, actually get that stingy, black-hearted miser to pay back the money?"

When Luo Shiliu and Xiao Dazhuang came out to see what was happening, Bai Lu had already put the money away and left after Li Shuixian reluctantly saw her off and gave her many instructions.

Shortly after, Xiao Cheng also left the store.

Xiao Dazhuang and the others followed.

Li Shuixian eventually gave her the money because Bailu had been standing there foolishly the whole time.

He didn't say anything, just waited for her to come up with a solution, which didn't seem like he was conspiring with Xiao Cheng to deceive her at all.

In addition, Li Shuixian's husband saw a TV set in the city and described it to her in glowing terms when he came back.

But I didn't have enough money to buy it. With this thousand yuan, I could bring the TV home.

Li Shuixian understood the principle that in business, you have to invest a small amount of money first in order to make a big profit.

After all, she's been married into the family and has been the boss's wife for several months now; no one has ever been able to swindle her money.

Bailu went to the market and bought a pound of pork belly, two pounds of spare ribs, and a lot of other ingredients.

I originally wanted to buy some chicken giblets to stir-fry with pickled peppers, but then I remembered that Xiao Cheng's lips can't be touched by spicy food, so I changed it to a pound of fresh small mushrooms and half a pound of lean meat to make a soup.

Bai Lu carried large and small bags, walking through the streets and alleys, having recovered all her money; she walked with a brisk pace.

An uninvited guest appeared at the next corner.

"You told Xiao Cheng to beat up A-Jie?"

Li Xuelan's thin lips were pressed down, and her drooping eyelids were lifted by her fierce brows. The fine lines at the corners of her eyes were particularly noticeable on her rough skin. It wasn't a fierce look, but rather a bit mean.

Bai Chaojie, standing next to him, had a bandage around his neck and his wrist was in a sling. The bruises and redness on his face had not yet completely subsided.

As he blocked Bailu's path, a smug smile appeared on his face, as if to say, "Your retribution has come."

"Mom, she not only made Xiao Cheng beat me, but she also gave money to Li Shuixian and wouldn't give it to you."

Bai Chaojie was used to complaining.

Even though she had heard his account of what happened yesterday, Li Xuelan was still furious when she heard it. "A-Jie is your brother. How could you let Xiao Cheng hit him? You bought so many things, what's wrong with sharing some with A-Jie?"

She's always said that since she was a child.

"You married a thug who fights all the time, and now you think you're all grown up! You spend your money on outsiders, and you don't even know how to come home and be filial to your father and me. I gave birth to you and raised you all these years, and this is how you repay me? You know the family is struggling, yet you still side with outsiders. Do you even care about your father and me?"

There was no trace of maternal affection in Li Xuelan's eyes, only burning anger and harsh criticism.

Bai Lu said unhurriedly, "You said that once a daughter is married, she is like water spilled from a bowl, and she shouldn't come to you for anything in the future."

After reprimanding Bai Lu, Li Xuelan waited to collect the gifts and money. Bai Lu never dared to disobey her and always knew to give in. But this time, Bai Lu not only refused to pay, but also dared to talk back.

Surprised, a surge of anger rushed to her temples, making her furious. "I'm your mother. I can take back what I've said at any time. Besides, your brother was injured by Xiao Cheng, so you should be the one to pay for his medical expenses."

Before he could finish speaking, Bai Chaojie ran off to rob Bai Lu again.

Li Xuelan acquiesced and did not stop it.

Unfortunately, this time, Bai Chaojie was startled to a halt by the tall and imposing figure behind Bai Lu before he could even touch her.

"You're pretty tough?"

A voice as cold as a frozen pool echoed softly.

Xiao Cheng emerged from the shadows and stood before Bai Lu, his imposing figure completely blocking her view. His gloomy and ruthless gaze swept over Bai Chaojie.

One sentence was enough to make him retreat repeatedly.

Li Xuelan was also afraid of Xiao Cheng, but he clearly didn't want to marry Bai Lu before, so why would he stand up for her now?

Unable to understand or care any longer, Bai Chaojie had already retreated to her side and dragged her away without a word, his steps faltering and frantically accelerating as if a ghost were chasing him.

Xiao Cheng took the things from Bai Lu's hands again.

With empty hands, they obediently followed behind.

He didn't speak, and neither did she.

After what happened last night, the neighbors no longer pointed and gossiped when they saw them again.

More than anything, it's curiosity and exploration.

For lunch, Bailu made braised pork, sweet and sour pork ribs, garlic bok choy, and lean pork and mushroom soup.

When Xiao Wei returned home from school, he still had a smile on his face as he walked briskly with the stride of a martial arts master, clearly very happy.

However, upon seeing Xiao Cheng, she immediately became as docile as a little lamb, taking small, careful steps.

After putting my schoolbag back in my room, I went to the hand pump to wash my hands, making sure they were clean before sitting down at the table.

Bai Lu found it all quite amusing.

I put a piece of braised pork on his plate. "Eat more meat so you'll have the strength to carry your schoolbag."

Xiao Wei was happily eating, but as soon as the braised pork was placed in his bowl, he immediately entered a state of high tension.

I quickly and discreetly glanced across the street.

Seeing that Bai Lu had also put braised pork on Xiao Cheng's plate, his stiff chopsticks slowly began to move.

Having learned from the fish head incident last night, Xiao Cheng had already gotten into the habit. He ate the braised pork in his bowl with a normal expression, and then naturally put some braised pork on Bai Lu's plate as well.

Bai Lu stared at the bowl with red tips sticking out, at a stalemate.

She actually doesn't really like braised pork because it's fatty, and pork belly is fatty too.

But how can I not eat the meat given by the boss? What if my stomach dies later?

Or, just close your eyes and swallow it whole.

Bai Lu, undeterred by death, picked up a piece of braised pork and stuffed it into her mouth, chewing it haphazardly before swallowing it.

Unexpectedly.

Another piece was added to the bowl.

Bai Lu: "..."

Is the big shot worried that his child is going hungry?

Bai Lu wanted to cry but had no tears. She gritted her teeth, endured the discomfort in her throat, and swallowed the meat whole.

To prevent her husband from feeding her more, she could only keep piling the vegetable hearts into the bowl until it was piled high, before finally adding a piece of sweet and sour pork rib to balance the color.

"The bok choy is crisp and sweet, it's delicious... The sweet and sour pork ribs are also very tasty, you should all eat more." To show her sincerity, Bai Lu ate a piece of sweet and sour pork ribs one after another, enjoying it very much.

Xiao Cheng stared at her cheeks, which were puffed up like steamed buns, his expression unreadable.

Xiao Wei ate his meal silently, not daring to say a word.

Perhaps because they hadn't eaten together properly in a long time, and the food was especially fragrant and delicious, Xiao Cheng and Xiao Wei both ate two bowls of rice, and even Bai Lu ate one and a half bowls.

The crispy rice crust in the pot was completely gone, not to mention the shiny plates and the large soup bowl, not a drop was left.

After dinner

Xiao Wei went back to his room to do his homework.

Bai Lu carried a small shovel to the backyard to weed. Some goosegrass was growing in the vegetable garden. If it wasn't dug up, it would grow bigger and bigger, covering all the vegetables and absorbing all the nutrients.

In later generations, there was a small vegetable garden in the residential compound where her maternal grandparents lived. Every time she went to play, her maternal grandmother would take her to the vegetable garden to fertilize, water, and weed.

He also told her that the fruits of his labor tasted the best and were the healthiest.

Just as Xiao Cheng was about to leave, a guest arrived.

The other party had probably heard of his reputation, but they didn't expect him to be home. They stood there dumbfounded at the door with a bamboo basket in their hands.

They neither advanced nor retreated, and even forgot to avoid each other.
