The next day at noon, Ye Linchen was studying in his rented room when his pager suddenly started beeping.
She picked it up and saw that it displayed the dormitory's phone number.
"The dorm phone? Who called? What happened?"
Feeling puzzled, Ye Linchen put down his pen, picked up his pager, went downstairs to the public phone booth, and dialed the number on the pager.
The person making the call was her roommate, Lin Xuemei.
"Xiao Chen! Are you busy right now?"
Lin Xuemei seemed to be in low spirits.
Ye Linchen hurriedly asked, "Nothing's wrong, I was just reviewing. What happened? What's wrong?"
"This... about what happened last night... it's not something that can be explained in just a few words..."
Ye Linchen raised his wrist and glanced at the time; it was already past eleven.
She then said to Lin Xuemei, "How about this, you wait for me at the second canteen. I'll come back for lunch, and we'll talk then."
"Okay, I'll wait for you in the cafeteria."
After hanging up the phone, Ye Linchen packed a few books and rushed back to school.
When she arrived at the canteen, Lin Xuemei and Li Hongying were already sitting there waiting for her.
Both of them had food in front of them, but they looked gloomy and had no appetite.
Ye Linchen bought the food and sat down opposite them: "What's wrong with you? You all look so pale? Where's Lina?"
"Lina said she has something to do and is going out for a while, so she won't be having dinner with us," Lin Xuemei said.
"What exactly happened? Why are you all so worried?" Ye Linchen asked curiously.
Lin Xuemei then recounted in detail what had happened to Zhou Xiaoyan in the dormitory the previous night.
"Xiao Chen, what should I do? This report is due soon, and if I don't work overtime, I definitely won't finish it, and my final grade will definitely be affected!"
Li Hongying was furious: "Zhou Xiaoyan is absolutely unreasonable! How are our studies getting in her way? Why should we move out!"
Lin Xuemei said with a long face, "If I had known she cared so much, I would have studied harder. If it really comes to it, I'll have to live in the library from now on, but I don't even know if the library allows people to live there!"
Ye Linchen disliked Zhou Xiaoyan because she had spoken up for Zhang Tingting several times before, and the two basically had no interaction.
When they met outside, they would just nod and walk away, which shows that they didn't know much about Zhou Xiaoyan.
I never expected her to be so concerned.
It's really hard to guess what's on someone like that's thinking. If she doesn't remember the exam questions, or if the retake isn't the same, she might actually blame Lin Xuemei.
Ye Linchen himself is not afraid of trouble, but he is facing final exams and does not want to spend his energy on such boring things.
She comforted Lin Xue, saying, "It's not a big deal, don't worry. Why don't you come stay at my place? It's right next to the school, very convenient."
"Really? Is that okay? Won't it bother you?" Lin Xuemei asked in surprise.
"Of course! It's so lonely living alone. You can come over and chat with me." Ye Linchen said with a smile, then turned to Li Hongying, "Hongying, if you'd like, you can come over too. It'll be more lively with more people."
"Sure, I was just worried about where to study tonight! If Lina goes too, it'll just be me and Zhou Xiaoyan in the dorm, and just thinking about it makes me suffocate!"
Li Hongying happily agreed.
"Then it's settled! We'll discuss it with Lina when she gets back and ask her to come along."
After lunch, the three of them went to the library together.
Not long after, Wang Lina arrived with her books.
Lin Xuemei told her that they were moving to Ye Linchen's rented apartment and asked if she wanted to come along.
Wang Lina shook her head and refused outright.
"I'm not going."
"Huh? Why? Are you going to stay in the dorm with Zhou Xiaoyan forever?" Lin Xuemei asked, puzzled.
"Who has the patience to waste time with her! I went to the nearby dormitory area this morning and found a room to rent for a month. I'll be living there for a while."
Wang Lina has a rather impatient personality and can't stand Zhou Xiaoyan's tendency to cause trouble for no reason. If they live together, they're bound to argue sooner or later.
But she also felt that arguing with this kind of person was unnecessary and a waste of her time.
Since her family was well-off, she decided to go out and find a place to live.
"You rent a place by yourself? And you're renting it for a month? You'll only be on vacation for two weeks at most. Isn't it a waste to rent for such a long time?" Li Hongying was also surprised.
"Why waste money? It's better to spend money for peace and quiet than to live with those kinds of people and suffer. These days, the minimum rent for any room outside is one month, so this is the only option."
Wang Lina comes from a well-off family and didn't care about the money, looking completely indifferent.
She invited Li Hongying and Lin Xuemei: "Would you like one of you to come and stay with me? I get quite bored living alone."
Lin Xuemei and Li Hongying exchanged a glance and shook their heads.
Li Hongying explained, "Forget it, let's stay with Xiao Chen. We're classmates and study the same major, so it'll be easier to study together."
“Okay then.” Wang Lina shrugged, not forcing them. “I can come to see you during the day and bring you food, so you don’t have to run around.”
"Great! Thank you so much! You're a true Good Samaritan!"
Lin Xuemei immediately hugged her arm gratefully and praised her.
Just then, Lin Xiaojuan arrived at the library. Seeing the four of them gathered together, she walked over and whispered, "What are you talking about? Why are you so happy?"
Ye Linchen removed the bag that had been used to reserve a seat for her, let her sit down, and told Lin Xiaojuan the whole story.
