Gu's mother felt a tightness in her chest from her son's words, and the veins on the back of her hand, which was braced against the table, bulged out.
Her lips trembled, and it took her a long time to squeeze out the words before she pointed at Gu Yifei and began to lecture him harshly.
"What do you mean by human life! That's a family matter of the Ye family!"
"You're an outsider. What right do you have to interfere?"
"Who is Meng Zihan to you? What right do you have to interfere in her private life!"
Gu Yifei stiffened his neck, his eyes reddening.
He met his mother's gaze without backing down in the slightest.
"Because I'm her childhood friend and her best friend!"
His voice trembled slightly with emotion as he asked, "Mom, let me ask you, if your best friend encountered something like this, would you just stand by and do nothing?"
“That’s different!” Gu’s mother answered without hesitation.
Gu Yifei immediately pressed on, demanding, "How are they different? Where are they different?"
When asked the question, Gu's mother was speechless for a moment, and her face turned bright red.
She slammed her hand on the table and said angrily, "I can't reason with a blockhead like you!"
She pointed at Gu Yifei and issued an ultimatum.
"I'm telling you, if you dare walk out of this door today, never come back to this house again!"
"I'll pretend I never had a son like you!"
Gu Yifei froze completely.
This was the first time in his life he had ever heard his mother say such heartless words.
Those words were like a dull knife, grinding back and forth in his heart, causing both pain and a feeling of oppression.
His mind was buzzing. He wanted to back down, but Meng Zihan's helpless yet expectant eyes kept appearing before his eyes, and he simply couldn't pretend not to see them.
Factory Director Gu, who had been sitting quietly listening to the mother and son's argument, finally spoke up.
"Xiaofei, you don't know the truth of the matter, so don't get too agitated. My suggestion is that since you care so much about Meng Zihan, you should investigate the whole story before making a decision, instead of just listening to her side of the story."
Even his father, who had always understood him best, was not on his side.
But Meng Zihan didn't say anything, she didn't complain at all, she was just asking him for help!
Gu Yifei wanted to explain, but faced with his father's cold face, he didn't dare to speak again.
He loosened his clenched fist, let his arms hang limply, and slowly sat back down in his seat.
When Gu's mother saw that he was no longer moving, she breathed a slight sigh of relief, but the anger on her face had not subsided.
She stared wide-eyed at her son.
If he dares to make any further moves, she will give him a good beating!
Just then, three loud knocks were heard as someone knocked on the door of the private room.
Then it was pushed open from the outside.
The waiter respectfully stepped aside and led Gu Jingran, Gu Yuanshan, and Huo Yunlan in.
Gu Jingran's family are all well-informed and adept at reading people.
As soon as I stepped into the private room, I immediately sensed that something was wrong.
Gu Yifei and his mother, one standing and the other sitting, both looked rather unpleasant.
Factory Director Gu also looked solemn.
"What's wrong?" Gu Yuanshan asked with a smile.
Factory Director Gu was the first to come to his senses. He quickly stood up, warmly greeted the three of them, and subtly steered the conversation away from the topic.
"Brother and sister-in-law, please come in and sit down."
"This is your first time eating here, right? We've ordered all your favorite dishes today."
Mother Gu also realized what was happening and stepped forward to take Huo Yunlan's hand.
"Sister-in-law, come sit here, let's sit next to each other."
Factory Director Gu pushed Gu Yuanshan to the head seat.
Gu Yuanshan did not refuse and sat down in the main seat.
His gaze swept over his younger brother's family, he cleared his throat, and said with a smile, "Several years have passed in the blink of an eye, and our two families have finally reunited in Jiangcheng."
He said this, gesturing to his wife.
Huo Yunlan understood immediately and placed the large and small bags she had brought on the table.
"I brought some things back for you all this time."
Factory Director Gu and his wife forced polite smiles and said, "Brother and sister-in-law, you're too kind," but still accepted all the gifts.
After packing her things, Gu's mother lowered her voice and reminded Gu Yifei, "Xiaofei, hurry up and thank your uncle and aunt."
Gu Yifei seemed not to hear, his eyes fixed on a soy sauce dish on the table, as if he were studying why the soy sauce was this color.
"Gu Yifei!"
Mother Gu called out again, her voice clearly showing impatience.
Gu Yifei seemed to have just woken up from a dream. He suddenly raised his head, looked blankly at his mother, then at Gu Jingran's family, and sluggishly replied, "Ah... thank you, Uncle, thank you, Aunt."
Gu Jingran took in the whole scene. Seeing Gu Yifei's obviously strange expression, he wondered what was going on.
His cousin has always been carefree and doesn't think things through.
There must be something else going on if he's so distracted.
It's probably related to Meng Zihan.
However, given the current situation, it is not convenient to inquire.
He then became suspicious and decided to go down and inquire.
The meal was unusually dull. Apart from Gu Yuanshan occasionally bringing up a few topics, most of the time there were only the soft sounds of bowls and chopsticks clattering together.
After the dinner, Gu Yuanshan politely declined the invitation to visit Director Gu's home in the afternoon.
"There's no need for us brothers to be so polite. We're back for a long time this time, and there will be plenty of opportunities to get together in the future."
Huo Yunlan also said, "We have to meet a friend this afternoon. We'll come again next time without your invitation."
"That's great! Don't be shy, just come whenever you want."
