Gu Yifei was knocked off balance by Meng Zihan's collision, and his heart was immediately gripped by her torrential tears and desperate cries.
He looked down at the person in his arms and realized that Meng Zihan seemed to have lost a lot of weight in just a few days.
Her cheeks were sunken, and her chin was so sharp it was unsettling.
The two dark circles under his eyes were even more glaring, clearly indicating that he hadn't had a good night's sleep.
He immediately thought of the Ye family.
Meng Zihan had said before that the Ye family treated her badly, and now that she has experienced such a terrible ordeal, they must look down on her even more.
Who knows how they tormented her to make her so afraid?
In truth, Gu Yifei also longed to see her.
But these past few days, his mother has been watching him like a prisoner in a detention center, not letting him go out, trying to lock him up at home.
As soon as he reached the door, his mother started making a huge scene, saying that if he dared to go to see that Meng Zihan, she would cut all ties with him and never have anything to do with him again.
His father is the same; he always sides with his mother and never listens to his explanations.
Gu Yifei lacked the courage to sever ties with his parents, and in the end, it ended with him being grounded.
He only managed to get this break today while his parents were visiting relatives, and he rushed out in a hurry.
Seeing Meng Zihan crying so hard she could barely breathe, Gu Yifei felt both heartache and guilt. He quickly pulled a tissue from his bag and awkwardly wiped away her tears.
He hurriedly explained, "No, Xiaohan, don't overthink it. It's my mom who won't let me go out."
Meng Zihan lifted her head from his arms, her long eyelashes, glistening with tears, trembled, and upon hearing his explanation, she shook her head vigorously.
She sniffed, trying to force a smile, but her lips just wouldn't lift.
“It’s okay,” she choked out, her voice soft and gentle, “I don’t blame you.”
She raised her hand and placed it on the back of his hand that had been wiping her tears, and whispered, "As long as you still think of me, it doesn't matter if we meet a few days later."
"I will always be here waiting for you."
As Gu Yifei listened to her words, his heart felt like it was blocked by something, making him feel suffocated.
He unconsciously tightened his grip on Meng Zihan's arm, and his brows furrowed into a knot.
His voice became hoarse as he recalled the harsh words his mother had used.
"My mom told me about what happened to you, Xiaohan. Why is this happening?"
Upon hearing this, Meng Zihan immediately stopped crying.
Gu Yifei's mother would actually say these things to him?
How is that possible?
In her previous life, that woman protected Gu Yifei like the apple of her eye, afraid that the rumors outside would offend his ears and affect his studies.
But now, in order to keep herself away from Gu Yifei, she's even willing to do something like this.
Meng Zihan was so angry she felt like she was going to grind her teeth to dust, but tears still streamed down her face, making her look fragile and helpless.
She lowered her eyes, and a story, half true and half false, quickly took shape in her mind.
“My workplace recently implemented housing reform, and my family couldn’t afford the money, so my aunt and uncle wanted my cousin Ye Linchen to pay for it.”
“You know my relationship with my cousin is terrible. She hates me to the core and wants to get rid of me. My uncle said that if he wants my cousin to pay him money, he has to kick me out of the house first.”
"I had just started working at the factory then, and I thought things were finally going to get better."
"As a result, he turned around and told me to pack my bags and leave."
"I was really terrified. Where could I go? Was I, a young girl, really going to have to sleep on the streets?"
"At that moment, Liu Mingxuan... he appeared."
The mere mention of that name brought back memories of the days she spent with him, and she felt a wave of nausea.
She suppressed her discomfort and continued, "He told me that he had liked me for a long time, wanted to date me, and wanted to marry me and settle down."
“I had just graduated and knew nothing. I didn’t know what kind of person he was. I thought he was really good to me and that I had found a lifeline.”
As Meng Zihan spoke, she burst into tears again, her sobs filled with genuine pain.
"Who would have thought that he was lying to me from beginning to end!"
"He kept coaxing me into marrying him while he was flirting with girls everywhere. Later, he even went and harassed my cousin, who beat him up and took him to the police station."
“He blamed me for everything, leaving me alone in Haicheng and running away. Then he turned around and asked me for money, saying it was money he spent while we were dating.”
“I don’t have any money to give him. I went back to beg my uncle, but he didn’t care about me.”
"Liu Mingxuan threatened me that unless I paid back the money, I would have to continue to get involved with him."
"What can I do? I can only stall him for now."
"But he later became even worse, not only refusing to bring a single penny home, but also throwing tantrums at home every day."
"He drank alcohol and then... he hit me."
As she said this, she subconsciously shrank her shoulders, her eyes filled with fear.
"During the Chinese New Year, he drank too much and kicked me in the stomach..."
"My child... is gone just like that."
Meng Zihan couldn't say anything more. She buried her face in Gu Yifei's arms, her shoulders shaking violently, and burst into tears.
She was sobbing uncontrollably, each word sounding like it was being squeezed out of her throat.
"Brother Yifei, I really didn't mean it. I really had no other choice but to be forced into this situation today."
