Ye Linchen looked at Wei's mother and sighed.
"Auntie, this really isn't about money."
Upon hearing this, Wei's mother tightened her grip on her arm and leaned forward, saying urgently, "I know, I know, Teacher Xiao Ye, I understand all the principles you're talking about. You're doing this for the good of our Boyuan."
"But his father and I are just rough and clumsy with words. We really don't know how to talk to our child about these things. So, we'd appreciate it if you, Teacher Ye, could help us educate him and motivate him to study."
Ye Linchen pursed his lips, pulled his arm away, and was about to refuse when Wei's mother's eyes suddenly reddened, and her voice trembled.
With a sob in her voice, she pleaded, "Teacher Ye, please help us again. I'm begging you. Look at him now. I'm really afraid he won't even graduate high school and will just laze around at home. His life will be ruined."
A mother's almost humble plea cracked a hole in Ye Linchen's otherwise resolute defenses.
Looking at the tears in Wei's mother's eyes, the words of refusal stuck in her throat, and she couldn't say them.
In the end, she gave in.
“Then I… will try again, but Auntie, let me make this clear first, his problem isn’t something that just started today or today, and we may not see any results in the short term.”
Upon hearing this, Wei's mother immediately showed a grateful expression and said repeatedly, "Oh, oh, good! As long as you're willing to teach, I'm relieved. Thank you, Teacher Ye!"
Ye Linchen didn't say anything more, just nodded, turned around and walked back into the house with her.
Wei Boyuan leaned back on the sofa and raised his eyebrows with amusement when he saw Ye Linchen return.
Ye Linchen ignored him and handed the test paper to Wei Boyuan.
"Take another look at the questions on the test paper. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Even if you know a little bit, write it down. It's not about how many points you get, it's just to get a feel for your level."
Wei Boyuan still didn't take the test paper. He lazily curled the corner of his mouth, glanced at his mother, and slowly spoke.
“My mom is standing here like a door god. When I get nervous, my mind goes blank and I can’t write a single word.”
He pointed to his bedroom and suggested, "Why don't you come back to my room with me to write?"
Ye Linchen looked at Wei's mother.
When Wei's mother heard that her son was willing to learn, she nodded hurriedly: "Teacher Ye, you can go to the bedroom to learn. I'll cut some fruit for you."
Ye Linchen thought about it for a moment, then stopped objecting and followed Wei Boyuan into his bedroom.
The room was small and cluttered with things, with posters of various weapons on the walls.
After Ye Linchen went inside, he deliberately did not close the door.
This way, although the two of them are alone, it's still safe.
After all, his parents are outside; if he dares to do anything, they can just shout it out.
After entering the room, Wei Boyuan plopped down at his desk and spun around in his chair to wait for her.
Ye Linchen didn't delay. He walked over, spread out the test paper, pushed it in front of him, and said in a calm tone, "Now you can start the questions, right?"
Wei Boyuan didn't even look at the test paper. He leaned back in his chair, twirling the ballpoint pen between his fingers. His eyes, however, were unabashedly scrutinizing Ye Linchen's plain face, down to her chest, and then to her clean, slender hands resting on the table.
Ye Linchen felt that gaze crawling all over her like insects, making her very uncomfortable.
She frowned and asked, "What's wrong?"
Wei Boyuan stopped spinning his pen and tapped the table lightly with the tip of the pen, drawing out the sound.
"Teacher Ye, upon closer inspection, you are quite pretty, even prettier than our school's most beautiful girl, and you have a great presence too."
His gaze swept over her face again.
"You're so pretty, why do you want to be a tutor? It's tiring and doesn't pay much. Are you really that short of money?"
Ye Linchen suppressed his impatience and said coldly, "Yes, I'm short of money."
Wei Boyuan immediately followed up with great interest: "Oh? Why are you short of money?"
Ye Linchen didn't want to argue with him about these things. She pointed to the first question on the test paper and urged him with her gesture: "Hurry up and do the question."
"No rush," Wei Boyuan said with a grin. "You're paid by the hour, right? If I don't do it now, and just drag it out, won't you earn more money the longer you stay? That won't do you any harm, will it?"
"That's your parents' money. They don't earn money easily, so why waste it?"
Ye Linchen looked at him and tried to reason with him.
“Them?” Wei Boyuan waved his hand dismissively. “They make money very easily.”
He turned completely towards her, proudly boasting, "In other words, I'm also very rich."
"How about this? Look, you're short of money, I'm rich. Why don't you just stop tutoring me and become my girlfriend? As long as you keep me happy, I'll give you all the pocket money you want, and I promise to study hard so you can earn every penny of your tutoring fees. It's a win-win situation, isn't it?"
Ye Linchen felt nauseous.
She stared at Wei Boyuan's smug face, her voice even colder than before: "What if I don't agree?"
Wei Boyuan slammed his pen on the table, crossed his arms, and held his chin high, looking at her triumphantly.
"You disagree? Then I'll be unhappy and won't be able to concentrate on learning. Teacher Ye, you won't earn a single penny."
Ye Linchen glanced at him, reached out, folded the test paper on the table in half, then in half again, and put it back in her bag.
She picked up her pen, capped it, and put it away.
Wei Boyuan's smug expression froze, and he was somewhat bewildered as he watched her series of actions.
He didn't realize what was happening until she zipped up her backpack and turned to walk towards the door.
He jumped up and asked anxiously, "What are you doing? What are you doing!"
Ye Linchen slung his backpack over his shoulder, turned around, and said calmly, "Since you don't want to study, there's no need for me to waste my time. Whether you study or not is your own business, it affects your own future, and has nothing to do with me. If I don't tutor you, I have other students, it won't stop me from making money at all."
“If you don’t study, you’re letting your parents down. The reason I came back just now was because I felt sorry for your mother’s hardships. You should be grateful that you have a mother who cares about you so much and loves you so much.”
"But since you're so hopeless, I don't think there's any need for you to stay any longer."
After saying that, she didn't look at him again and left the bedroom.
In the living room, Wei's mother had just cut a plate of apples and was about to take it into the bedroom.
Seeing Ye Linchen carrying a bag and looking like he was about to leave, the smile on Wei's mother's face froze instantly.
She hurriedly put the fruit plate on the table and rushed forward.
"Teacher Ye, what's wrong? Are you leaving?"
"Didn't we just agree on this? Why have you changed your mind again?"
