Unfortunately, those people were all seasoned veterans; they were polite on the surface but actually quite shrewd, and they didn't show much interest in her.
Meng Zihan wasn't in a hurry; making contact was a good start.
That noon, she had just secured a good contract from Factory Director Zhou and was sitting in her small office, calculating how much money she could make.
Suddenly, three knocks on the door startled her.
Thinking it was a delivery worker, she looked up and called out irritably, "The door's unlocked, come in!"
The door was pushed open, but instead of workers, two uniformed police officers walked in.
Meng Zihan's smile froze instantly, and her heart sank.
She quickly went through her thoughts. She had been very careful since arriving in Hong Kong and hadn't done anything out of line. Why would the police come knocking on her door?
"Excuse me, are you Ms. Meng Zihan?"
The lead police officer was older. He glanced at her face and then showed his badge.
Meng Zihan's heart was pounding like a rabbit's, and her palms were sweating, but she still forced herself to remain calm and nodded: "Yes... I am."
She leaned over and glanced at the police officer's ID, then stepped aside to let the person in.
The small office suddenly felt cramped with the addition of two tall men.
The police looked around and, without beating around the bush, went straight to the point: "Someone reported that your father, Meng Xuejun, has gone missing."
Meng Zihan was startled and almost lost her balance. She asked in surprise, "What? Missing? Officers, are you sure you're not mistaken?"
The two policemen exchanged a glance.
The younger man took out a small notebook and asked in a deep voice, "The person who reported the case said that your father hasn't shown up for many days. You are his daughter. When was the last time he contacted you? Do you know where he went?"
