Chapter Three: Self-Reliance Leads to Abundance

"I just mopped the floor!" Meng Xueyun glared at Ye Linchen and scolded him sharply, "How can a grown man not know how to appreciate other people's hard work!"

Ye Zhenghua looked at the muddy footprints in the corridor and scolded Ye Linchen.

“Your mother spent so much time cleaning it up, and look at the mess it looks like. From now on, you should take off your shoes before coming into the house.”

As Ye Zhenghua spoke, he pulled Ye Linchen to the shoe cabinet by the door, took out a pair of cotton slippers from it and handed them to her: "Change your shoes first."

Ye Linchen silently took off her shoes, intending to change them. Meng Xueyun picked up a mop and threw it in front of Ye Linchen, about to make her mop the floor. Upon seeing this, she screamed again.

“I just bought those, they’re new. Don’t wear them, I’ll get you another pair.”

This is what a real mother is like!

Since she arrived home, she hasn't asked her if she's cold, hungry, or tired. Instead, she's worried about the floor getting dirty, and now she won't even give her a new pair of slippers.

Although Ye Linchen had no hope for this family, he still felt a pang of pain in his heart.

Meng Xueyun didn't think there was anything wrong with her behavior. She pulled a pair of old slippers from the shoe cabinet and threw them next to Ye Linchen's feet with a "thud".

"Wear these."

Ye Linchen ignored her and put on her new cotton shoes.

Ignored by her, Meng Xueyun shouted angrily, "Look at her, look at her! She treats me like I'm talking nonsense and won't listen to a word she says!"

"Just now, what if I said I got the time wrong? Why did you have to argue and win? What good does it do you if your dad loses face in front of others?"

Ye Linchen looked up, puzzled, and asked, "You want me to lie?"

Meng Xueyun was taken aback: "Lying?"

Ye Linchen looked straight at her and said, "I'm here today. One should be honest and not lie."

Meng Xueyun was stunned.

Ye Linchen was absolutely right. There were other children in the family, so she really couldn't say anything more.

She was immediately enraged and embarrassed.

That brat is a menace; anything that gets involved with her is bound to end badly.

She's only been back for a short while, and she's already ruined the reputation of her entire family!

Meng Zihan walked over and put her arm around Meng Xueyun's to smooth things over.

"Auntie, don't be angry, let's eat."

A gentle smile immediately appeared on Meng Xueyun's face as she patted her niece's little hand lightly.

"Xiaohan is so sensible. If it weren't for you speaking up for me today, I would have lost all face."

Ignoring their affectionate relationship, Ye Linchen stood up straight and looked towards the dining table.

In the center of the table was a large bowl of mutton soup, steaming hot and fragrant.

The soup is snow-white and rich in ingredients; you can clearly see the mutton offal and meat floating on the surface.

On the table were glass noodles, cabbage, and dipping sauce.

In his previous life, Ye Linchen didn't know that he was having mutton for dinner.

It was very late when she got home. The Ye family was all asleep, and there wasn't a drop of mutton soup left. Even the smell of mutton had dissipated.

Meng Xueyun came out wearing a coat, glanced at her, told her to get something to eat, and then went back to sleep.

When I entered the house, I specifically told her to be quiet so as not to wake her younger siblings.

Ye Linchen was starving, so he used water from the thermos to cook a bowl of plain noodles to fill his stomach.

Since there's mutton to eat today, she certainly can't be polite.

Without being asked, she went into the kitchen, washed her hands, took out bowls and chopsticks from the cupboard, walked to the dining table, and asked curiously, "Aren't you eating?"

Meng Xueyun stared at the bowl and chopsticks in her hand, utterly astonished.

This girl is home for the first time, so how does she know where the kitchen is, how does she know to get the bowls and chopsticks? It's like she's very familiar with the place.

Meng Xueyun remained silent, and the others also stared at Ye Linchen without saying a word.

Ye Linchen didn't mind and said with a smile, "Then I'll eat first. I've been starving all day."

After saying that, he moved his chair, sat down, and happily started eating.

"Look at her, she really doesn't act like she's part of the group, she's already eating all by herself."

Meng Xueyun felt a pang of heartache as she watched Ye Linchen devour large chunks of mutton, and she screamed again.

"I'm your daughter, how can I be considered an outsider?" Ye Linchen asked with a smile as she picked up a piece of mutton with her chopsticks.

“Of course you’re not an outsider. Xiao Nan, Xiao Bei, Xiao Han, sit down and eat.” Ye Zhenghua snapped out of his daze, pulled Meng Xueyun aside, and answered first, “You sit down and eat too, the soup will get cold and smelly.”

"I don't have a daughter as ill-mannered as you. Your parents haven't even sat down yet, and you've already started eating." Meng Xueyun rolled her eyes in anger.

"You may not acknowledge me, but I will acknowledge you. No matter how unruly you are, I will not mind."

The mutton soup was delicious, and Ye Linchen happily ate the soup and meat, replying generously.

Before Meng Xueyun could say anything more, Ye Zhenghua stopped her, handed her a bowl and chopsticks, and ladled soup and meat for her.

Seeing that Ye Linchen had angered Meng Xueyun, the three children of the Ye family felt a sense of shared hatred and distanced themselves from her, wanting to isolate her and make their stance clear.

There was a large empty space next to Ye Linchen, but she was completely unaffected and ate with even greater relish.

What's the use of you all being united now? You'll still tear each other apart and fight each other for your own interests in the future.

Seeing the mutton and offal in the basin rapidly decreasing, Meng Xueyun felt heartbroken and hurriedly put meat into Meng Zihan's bowl, gently comforting her.

"Xiaohan, eat quickly, or there won't be any left."

After persuading Meng Zihan, she turned to Ye Linchen and slammed her hand on the table.

"Did bandits break into this house? Have you never eaten meat in your eight lifetimes?"

She was gentle and considerate towards Meng Zihan, but towards Lin Chen, she was like she was possessed by a whistle spirit, her voice sharp and shrill, full of resentment.

Whether in her past or present life, Ye Linchen still couldn't understand what she had done wrong that made her biological mother hate her so much.

But that doesn't matter anymore.

In this life, no matter what Meng Xueyun does, she can't be hurt anymore.

"Yes, you know what kind of life I lived in the countryside."

Ye Linchen swallowed a mouthful of meat, then drank a sip of soup before asking with a grin, "Mom, you feel bad that I'm eating meat? Why are you like this? Am I not your biological son?"

She had asked this question in her past life, crying as she asked it.

Feeling bewildered, aggrieved, and indignant.

Meng Xueyun denied it, saying that everything she did was for Ye Linchen's good.

It was Ye Linchen's lack of ambition that broke her heart.

Meng Zihan is different.

Meng Zihan is her only relative, and she is exceptionally sensible.

Being good to Meng Zihan is worthwhile; she understands that.

Hearing Ye Linchen ask this question, Meng Xueyun slammed her chopsticks on the table.

"You're such a grown-up, yet you're selfish and immature! I wish I'd never had you!"

Ye Linchen smiled, said nothing more, finished eating and drinking, stood up, and politely said to Ye Zhenghua, "Dad, I'm full, you can continue eating."

Ye Zhenghua has at least a little humanity in this family.

During holidays, winter and summer vacations, I would go back to the countryside to see Ye Linchen and bring small gifts.

Unfortunately, this was under the condition that there was no conflict with his interests.

He can abandon everything, including humanity, once his interests are affected.

This also includes her daughter.

Ye Linchen never harbored any illusions about him, and only maintained a superficial harmony.
