Chapter Twenty-Three: Diagnostic Test

Early Monday morning, Ye Linchen followed Ye Zhenghua to the high school section of the steel factory's affiliated school.

It was winter break, and the campus was quiet, with only a few withered leaves swirling in the chilly wind on the empty road.

The school's main iron gate was tightly closed. Only after Ye Zhenghua explained his purpose to the gatekeeper was he able to enter through a small door on the side.

The high school campus is quite large, with two rows of bicycle sheds on either side of the iron gate.

The larger row is for students, and the smaller row is for teachers.

Passing through the bike shed, the playground is on your left.

Several nearby residents were walking laps around the playground, exercising.

The bright sunlight shone on the playground, adding a touch of warmth to the slightly desolate space.

The patterns on the track were clearly visible, and the withered yellow grass looked as if it had been plated with a layer of gold.

This playground is spacious and full of life.

However, the playground in Ye Linchen's memory was cold and terrifying.

In her past life, whenever she passed by the playground, someone would deliberately throw a basketball at her.

The skin under the school uniform was always covered in bruises.

When Meng Xueyun got home and saw that her clothes were dirty from the basketball, she was met with even harsher curses.

She also consistently struggled with the physical education activities.

The students imitated her movements and expressions, and burst into shrill laughter.

They mocked her, calling her a country bumpkin who couldn't even straighten her legs and that she should stay in the countryside her whole life!

That unrestrained laughter was like a knife scraping her face and stabbing her heart; it followed her like a shadow, leaving her nowhere to escape.

This school, this playground, was like a giant execution ground to her; she just wanted to escape it.

But today, as she looked at this familiar playground again, she felt no fear, only inexplicable excitement and anticipation.

The events of her past life will never happen to her again.

Ye Zhenghua noticed that she kept glancing at the playground and felt somewhat displeased.

She doesn't think about studying when she comes to school; all she thinks about is how to have fun. Luckily, I didn't expect her to go to university.

Ye Zhenghua breathed a sigh of relief.

That's fine, it'll be easier to justify not letting her study later.

He raised his hand and pointed to the right.

"The office building is over here."

Ye Linchen withdrew his gaze, nodded, and followed him toward the office building.

The office building is a five-story gray building, and the Academic Affairs Office is located in a corner on the first floor.

Students are on holiday, but teachers are still working, and every office door is open.

The academic affairs office was also open, and the person in charge of handling the transfer procedures was a female teacher surnamed Li.

Teacher Li is in her forties, with shoulder-length curly hair, and looks very kind.

Because they had communicated beforehand, she checked that Ye Linchen's information was complete, and then took out two test papers.

Both test papers had questions printed on both sides, because Ye Linchen studied science, and the questions included Chinese, mathematics, English, physics, chemistry, and biology.

"Ye Linchen, here is a comprehensive test paper. Please take it first so we can assess your level and then assign you to a class based on your performance."

Ye Zhenghua was a little nervous.

"Teacher Li, what if I don't pass the exam? Will they refuse to accept me?"

The teaching level in rural schools is far behind that in urban schools. Even though Ye Linchen had good grades in his hometown, he wouldn't rank highly here.

Teacher Li glanced at Ye Linchen, who was standing to the side.

“Even if she fails, she can be placed in a regular class. As long as she is willing to study hard, she will have no problem graduating.”

She then took two more sheets of white paper from the table and handed them to Ye Linchen.

"This is scratch paper. You can think more about the questions you don't know how to answer. Don't be too nervous. Just do your best."

Teacher Li pointed to the empty desk in the corner of the office.

"Go do it over there. It'll take an hour. I'll remind you ten minutes in advance. Do you need a pen?"

"No need, I brought my own."

Ye Linchen answered obediently, took the test paper and draft paper, and sat down at the desk.

Teacher Li's impression of her improved somewhat.

Good, you know to prepare in advance.

After announcing the start of the exam, Teacher Li, worried that Ye Zhenghua might get bored while waiting, handed him a stack of newspapers and told him to sit down and pass the time, while she went about her own business.

After a while, she looked up at Ye Linchen and found her engrossed in writing, the pen tip scratching on the test paper.

Teacher Li was somewhat surprised: This child answers questions quite quickly?

She got up and walked over to Ye Linchen, wanting to see how she was doing with the questions.

Ye Linchen had finished the front of the first test paper and was about to turn it over to work on the back.

Teacher Li was surprised. It had only been less than ten minutes, hadn't it?

That's incredibly fast!

She looked at the questions Ye Linchen had already finished and found that not only was his handwriting neat and his paper clean, but his answers also seemed to be correct.

Seeing Ye Linchen raise his head, she quickly whispered, "You continue, don't worry about me."

She tiptoed back to her seat and couldn't help but look up at Ye Linchen again.

This child has good grades; this set of questions isn't difficult for her.

I mustn't make any more noise and affect her performance.

Next, Ms. Li continued with her work, but she would occasionally glance up at Ye Linchen.

She noticed that Ye Linchen was always engrossed in writing, without the slightest hesitation or deep thought.

Was this set of questions really that easy for her?

It's important to know that this is a comprehensive exam paper specifically prepared by the school for the entrance examination, and its difficulty level is quite high.

Even among students in the top-performing classes, very few can score above 80.

Judging from Ye Linchen's posture while answering the questions, it seems like he could get full marks?

Could it be that a top student transferred here this time?
