Although Ye Qing's upbringing wasn't exactly complicated, her mother's early death meant she had to face everything alone. As a result, Ye Qing has seen and experienced a lot. While she may not be particularly good at hiding her true thoughts, she certainly doesn't reveal what she's thinking from the start.
However, Xu Zhe had limited contact with people due to his health condition and was relatively naive. Ye Qing knew there must be something going on with his drastic change in reaction.
Although Xu Zhe knew his reaction was a bit over the top, he still wanted to keep it a secret. After calming down, he said to Ye Qing, "Are you sure you didn't see wrong?"
Ye Qing laughed: "At first, I also thought I might have misread it, but your attitude tells me I didn't. Quan Zhen... that is, your mother, now needs to use a wheelchair? What happened to her legs?"
"I didn't say anything, did I?" Xu Zhe muttered softly after a moment of silence.
Ye Qing didn't say anything, she just stared at Xu Zhe without blinking.
Xu Zhe, lacking Ye Qing's experience, couldn't withstand Ye Qing's gaze for long. He kept swallowing nervously, and finally, feeling extremely uncomfortable under Ye Qing's stare, he nodded almost imperceptibly and said, "In a wheelchair."
"What's wrong with her? Why is she in a wheelchair?" Ye Qing asked.
Just as Xu Zhe finished asking the question and was about to answer, Xi Quan returned. Upon seeing Xi Quan, Xu Zhe immediately stood up and fled as if he were running away.
Looking at Xu Zhe's appearance, Xi Quan was very puzzled. He stared at his back for a while, then asked Ye Qing, "What's wrong with him?"
Recalling her argument with Xi Quan in his office, Ye Qing glanced at him. She really didn't want to talk to him anymore, but with two children still around, she didn't want to argue with him in front of them.
However, Xi Quan seemed to have no idea what Ye Qing was thinking. He just stared at Ye Qing without saying a word.
Just now, Ye Qing made Xu Zhe extremely uncomfortable, but now the tables have turned. Ye Qing is now extremely uncomfortable being stared at by Xi Quan. After a moment of silence, Ye Qing said, "I saw someone outside today who looks exactly like your mother, so I asked Xu Zhe a couple of questions."
Upon hearing Ye Qing's words, Xi Quan's hand, which was loosening his tie, stopped, just as surprised as Xu Zhe had been earlier.
Ye Qing originally didn't want to talk about it and temporarily put her curiosity aside. But now, seeing Xi Quan like this, Ye Qing's curiosity was aroused again. "The reason I asked Xu Zhe is not because I saw your mother, but because I was surprised that your mother was in a wheelchair."
Ye Qing's words surprised Xi Quan once again, but Xi Quan was still different from Xu Zhe.
If Ye Qing's experience far surpasses Xu Zhe's, then Xi Quan's experience is even greater than Ye Qing's. Therefore, although Xi Quan was surprised, he did not react as strongly as Xu Zhe. He did not deny Ye Qing's words, but simply asked in return, "Is that so?"
To Ye Qing, this was utter nonsense.
However, Ye Qing didn't mock her. Following her own train of thought, she asked Xi Quan, "Is your mother Quan Zhen's current situation the reason why you've been avoiding me all these years, making it impossible for me to contact you?"
Xi Quan didn't really want Ye Qing to keep asking questions. After taking off his coat, he went to the kitchen, ostensibly to get a drink of water, but actually to avoid Ye Qing and not answer her questions. However, Ye Qing actually followed him to the kitchen. When Xi Quan heard Ye Qing's words, he was stunned for a moment, then put down his water glass and asked Ye Qing, "If I tell you, will you be able to let go of the gap between us these past few years, forgive and forget, and never bring up divorce again?"
Actually, Xi Quan wanted to say forgiveness, but he was afraid that Ye Qing would reject him directly, so he went around in circles.
Although the two mean the same thing, Xi Quan felt that this way he might be more accepting of it.
Just as Xi Quan hadn't expected Ye Qing to keep pressing him, Ye Qing hadn't expected Xi Quan to ask him the same question again, and Ye Qing was stunned.
Seeing Ye Qing's stunned expression, Xi Quan said, "Can you give me a definite answer?"
After saying that, looking at Ye Qing's expression, Xi Quan denied it again: "It seems like it's not going to work."
Ye Qing was also angered by Xi Quan's sarcastic attitude: "Since you know I want a divorce, why are you still dragging your feet on it?"
Realizing she had spoken too loudly, Ye Qing subconsciously turned to look at the living room. Seeing that the child was still playing and hadn't noticed the kitchen, Ye Qing felt a little relieved. Even so, Ye Qing's voice involuntarily dropped considerably: "Also, according to you, we won't get a divorce. If we're not getting a divorce, shouldn't we be honest with each other? But you, it's obvious, are hiding many things from me."
“I didn’t mean to hide it from you, but since you think we can’t go on like this, what does it matter whether you know these things or not? You don’t like her anyway.”
Ye Qing knew who the "she" Xi Quan was referring to was Quan Zhen.
However, Ye Qing subconsciously frowned because in previous years, Xi Quan and Quan Zhen did not have a good relationship, but Xi Quan still referred to Quan Zhen as "my mother" and rarely used "she" to refer to her.
This made Ye Qing even more suspicious.
But seeing Xi Quan's expression, and knowing he wasn't going to say anything more, Ye Qing knew that she wouldn't get any information out of him under these circumstances.
So the two remained silent, somewhat as if they were competing with each other.
Noticing the confusion in Ye Qing's eyes, and the subtle concern that she was trying so hard to hide, Xi Quan felt a surge of warmth in his heart and couldn't help but want to hug Ye Qing.
Just as he walked up to Ye Qing and reached out to hug her, the doorbell rang, and someone knocked on the door.
Xi Quan lowered his head and closed his eyes in annoyance. He then turned and glanced gloomily at the direction of the living room door, wondering who could be so unsightly.
He didn't want to answer, but the doorbell kept ringing.
Ye Qing glanced at Xi Quan, puzzled, and asked, "Go open the door?"
It wasn't that Ye Qing insisted on sending Xi Quan, but rather that Ye Qing felt that anyone who came knocking on the door here was probably looking for Xi Quan.
Helpless, Xi Quan had no choice but to open the door. He was already a little annoyed, and when he opened the door and saw who was standing outside, he became even angrier. At the same time, any romantic feelings he had were gone. He quickly stood in the doorway, blocking it, and wouldn't let the person outside in.
Ye Qing hadn't noticed at first, but when she went to the living room to play with the children, she inadvertently saw Xi Quan's actions. She seemed to realize something and asked, "Who is it? Why won't you let them in?"
Seeing Xi Quan's actions, Ye Qing knew that the people standing outside were definitely people he didn't like, or people who were there to cause trouble. But since they were already there, he certainly wouldn't let them go if he didn't let them in.
So Ye Qing took the two children upstairs and glanced outside. When she saw who it was, Ye Qing snorted coldly.
