Chapter 8 An Unexpected Joy

Ye Qing put away the knife, pulled out a chair, sat down outside, and said self-deprecatingly, "Where should I go?"

Xi Quan paused for a moment, then said, "Let me help you find a place."

Ye Qing glanced warily at Xi Quan: "Isn't this inappropriate? You're like this now..."

Having just escaped Liang Ziqiang, Ye Qing knew she had to leave this place and couldn't stay any longer, even though she didn't know how many days Yang Xiujuan, her uncle, and her aunt would be detained. Given her uncle and aunt's viciousness, who knew what might happen if they got out? Besides, she was determined to leave as well.

Besides, Xi Quan and Xu Ying are not divorced yet, so it's not appropriate.

Having understood Ye Qing's words, Xi Quan sneered: "What do you think I'm going to help you find a place? The villagers may seem to pity you, but no one is really that kind as to ask them to help you."

That's true. Even though Ye Qing doesn't usually dress up, she has a good natural beauty, so even without makeup, she's still stunning.

Ye Qing knew her own situation. She also knew that if she asked for help, her son, who was of marriageable age, would definitely be willing to help her, but the price would probably be that she would have to stay in Xiaoyao Village for the rest of her life.

However, this was not what Ye Qing wanted.

Xi Quan glanced at Ye Qing and said, "Move into the village committee first, then no one will bother you."

It is a safe place, but it's not easy to find someone to stay at the village committee.

Xi Quan seemed to sense Ye Qing's concerns and said, "Don't worry, the village secretary, Xu Jiaqiang, listens to me more now."

These words startled Ye Qing slightly. Thinking of what Xi Quan had shown the village secretary during the day, Ye Qing asked, "What did you give the village secretary during the day?"

"One is a pregnancy test report, and the other is an abortion report. Both are signed by Xu Jiaqiang's son, who works in town. There is also a report that was signed and fingerprinted by the person arrested when the police arrested him at the barbershop. It is also the son of the village secretary."

After saying that, Xi Quan seemed afraid that Ye Qing might not understand what he meant, so he asked again, "Do you know what a barbershop does?"

Ye Qing was already embarrassed by what he said, but Xi Quan's question made her even more embarrassed. She rolled her eyes at Xi Quan and said, "You should leave. It's late at night, and people will gossip."

“My house used to be next door, you haven’t forgotten, have you?”

Ye Qing hadn't forgotten, but she hadn't expected Xi Quan to be living there. Now that he mentioned it, Ye Qing's expression changed: "Then we need to be even more careful. You know what the gossipy women in the village were saying when my mother was still alive."

Xi Quan shook his head: "My mom and dad divorced and went back to the city. My dad stayed in Xiaoyao Village with me, and your mom is single too. Even if they had something going on, there's nothing to criticize them for."

While this is true, it's not that Ye Qing is being self-deprecating. Rather, her upbringing is different from Xi Quan's. She said, "Your parents are divorced, but I don't even know who my father is."

Ye Qing was concerned about all the gossip.

After saying that, Ye Qing went inside and locked the door from the inside again.

"Don't need the stool anymore?" Xi Quan called out from outside.

"I don't want it anymore," Ye Qing said irritably.

Xi Quan smiled; this child really is thoughtful.

But jokes aside, after returning to the next room, Xi Quan took out a straw mat and slept in the courtyard.

It's June in the lunar calendar, which is July in the Gregorian calendar. It's very hot, so sleeping outside is much cooler.

When Ye Qing got up to use the restroom around 5 a.m., she groggily saw someone sleeping on the ground on the other side of the fence. She paused for a moment, then felt a little conflicted.

Because of all the things that happened the day before, Ye Qing saw that it was still early, so she went back to sleep.

When she woke up again, it was almost noon. She made herself something to eat, packed her things, and it was already afternoon. There was still a bus to the city. Ye Qing took her luggage, glanced around, and knew she was leaving, leaving this place forever.

Just as the door was locked, the village loudspeaker blared: "Ye Qing, Ye Qing, come to the village committee if you hear this announcement."

Ye Qing looked at the loudspeaker on the utility pole not far away with surprise and frowned.

The last bus to the county town was about to leave, and Ye Qing really didn't want to go. Although the loudspeaker kept announcing the departure, Ye Qing was prepared to ignore it.

As soon as Ye Qing reached the village entrance, the village accountant hurriedly caught up with him. "What's wrong with you, kid? Aren't you hard of hearing? The loudspeaker is shouting so loudly, why are you still walking? If I hadn't heard you coming to the village entrance, I wouldn't have been able to find you."

"Uncle, what's wrong?" Ye Qing asked.

"Great news! Let's go, this is fantastic news! I've been waiting for this for ages!" Saying this, she took Ye Qing's things and turned around first.

Since the other party had taken all the items, Ye Qing couldn't leave any further. Although she was anxious, she still went to the village committee.

Surprisingly, Xi Quan was also there, along with the village secretary and another person Ye Qing didn't recognize.

But one look at that person and he didn't seem like a simple man; he was dressed in a suit and tie.

Ye Qing asked, "What's wrong?"

The village party secretary smiled and asked Ye Qing to sit down, then looked at Xi Quan.

Xi Quan glanced at the man in a suit standing next to him, who quickly took a document out of his briefcase and placed it in front of Ye Qing.

"What is it?" Ye Qing asked, looking down as she flipped through the documents in her hand. When she got to the last one, she stared at the string of numbers for a long time, then threw the documents far away as if she had picked up a hot potato.

“It won’t bite your hand, what are you afraid of? After you sign, go to the bank to open a savings account, and I’ll transfer the money to you,” Xi Quan said.

Ye Qing glanced at the people in the village committee office, and after a long while, slowly spoke: "No, what exactly is going on? All this money is mine?"

The village chief, not daring to offend Xi Quan, explained to Ye Qing with a smile: "This is the money our village's coal mine earned up to last month. The money on this document originally belonged to your mother, but since she's no longer here, the money is yours now."

After speaking, he glanced at Xi Quan and the person next to him.

Xi Quan nodded and followed the village secretary's words: "The village's coal mine was originally set up by my dad and your mom. The money was also divided according to the agreement. Before your mom passed away, she was afraid that your uncle would make things difficult for you if he found out, so she asked my dad to have someone make this document, saying that after you turn eighteen, you can only get the money."

You know my dad used to study law, whether he was a dabbler or not is another matter, but this document is valid. Now I'm selling this coal mine, so I'm thinking of giving you your money. Of course, selling the coal mine requires your consent, or you can continue to cooperate with the village and receive dividends. I'm planning to sell this coal mine to the village.”

Ye Qing glanced at the smiling village party secretary.

She didn't want to have anything to do with Xiaoyao Village anymore. It wasn't that she was heartless, but her uncle and aunt were too vicious. But such a large sum of money...
