The other four maids knelt down one after another, "Yes, eunuch, please save us and give us some food so that we can survive today."
"Are you fighting because of this mouse?" Ruanruan pulled Zhao Chengqian's hand away and stared at them with wide eyes.
"Yes, we servants haven't eaten for three days. If this continues, we will all die."
"You don't know, there is no food in the palace now. We low-ranking palace maids are not given any food. We can only rely on catching mice to fill our stomachs. All the mice in the palace have been caught in three days." When the palace maid said this, her eyes were red, her face was pale, and she was breathing heavily with every word she spoke.
The others nodded quickly, "Please ask the father-in-law to give us something to eat."
Ruanruan glanced at Zhao Chengqian beside her. Zhao Chengqian seemed to know what she was going to do. He took Ruanruan's schoolbag off her shoulder and handed it to her.
Ruanruan unzipped her schoolbag and took out a bag of candy. "I have some candy here. Share it among you."
As soon as these words were spoken, the palace maids all looked over, their eyes shining, and some even couldn't help swallowing their saliva while staring at Ruanruan's bag of candy.
Ruanruan handed the candy to Chunxi, who opened the packaging and gave six pieces to each of the palace maids.
The palace maid held the candy in her hand and stuffed it directly into her mouth without even opening the wrapping.
"You can't eat the outer packaging! You have to open the bag before you can eat it." Ruanruan said quickly.
The maid spat out the candy again, opened the bag and put it back into her mouth.
"Thank you, Miss!" Several palace maids immediately knelt down and said.
Ruan Ruan waved her hand and said, "Just wait a little longer. The palace will soon have food for you."
The palace maids nodded doubtfully.
Ruanruan followed Chunxi and continued walking towards the cold palace. Along the way, they encountered many closed palace doors, and there was even a foul smell coming from inside.
When Chunxi smelled the smell, he realized something was wrong and explained, "This wasteland has never been taken care of."
Several people quickly walked to the front of the cold palace. Chunxi asked someone to open the door of the cold palace, and a foul smell hit them in the face.
He glanced at the side yard and saw a frozen corpse lying at the gate of the yard, with its eyes wide open looking towards the palace gate.
Chunxi took a step back, stopped Zhao Chengqian and Ruanruan, and signaled to the people behind him.
The people behind came forward and carried the concubine who had frozen to death inside.
"Little Doctor, Prince, let's go. The Queen is in the innermost room."
The entire cold palace was eerily quiet.
"Save me..." A faint cry for help came from a yard.
Ruanruan turned around and stopped at the gate of the yard, putting her ears close to listen, and intermittent cries for help reached her ears.
"Father-in-law."
Chunxi signaled to the person beside him, and the person kicked open the door, revealing an old man with gray hair lying on the ground in the yard.
Ruanruan peeled a candy and put it into her mouth. The man pursed his lips and said, "Thank you."
"Are you the late emperor's concubine?" Chunxi asked someone to help the old woman up, and then spoke as if he remembered something.
The only person who can have her own separate courtyard in this cold palace and is so old is the concubine of the late emperor.
The concubine nodded and said, "It has been a long time since anyone has brought food to this cold palace."
"What are you doing here?"
"Let's go find the Queen." Ruanruan said.
"Queen, you'd better go and take a look. If you don't go now, the person might starve to death." said the concubine.
"That's impossible. The Empress is in the cold palace, and she is usually given meals. His Majesty has personally ordered the imperial kitchen to deliver the meals." His Majesty had banished the Empress to the cold palace because of the situation, but he was thinking about her in his heart. What's more, His Majesty attached so much importance to His Royal Highness the Prince of Jin that it was impossible for him to neglect the Empress.
"There is famine in the palace now, and the servants are starving. The food must have been stolen and snatched away before it even reaches the Queen. The Queen can't leave the cold palace, and she can't file a complaint, so the servants are even more unscrupulous." The concubine said again.
Upon hearing this, Zhao Chengqian's face darkened and he ran out.
"Brother Xiaogan!" Ruanruan hurriedly followed him.
When the two of them arrived at the palace gate where the queen was imprisoned, Zhao Chengqian raised his hand and knocked on the door, "Bang, bang, bang!"
"Grandmother! Grandmother, please open the door. Your grandson is here to see you."
There was no response from the person inside, and Zhao Chengqian felt a little panicked. He ran back a few steps, rushed over again, and kicked the door with his leg.
The palace gate was solid and there was no movement at all.
"Your Highness, don't be anxious." Chunxi hurried over and asked someone to open the palace gate.
As soon as the palace gate opened, Zhao Chengqian rushed in.
"Imperial Grandmother? Imperial Grandmother?" Zhao Chengqian glanced around the yard. There was no one in the yard, so he rushed into the queen's bedroom again.
There was a person lying on the bed. Hearing the noise, he slowly raised his head, covered his mouth and coughed violently, "Godson? Am I dreaming again? Why is Godson here?"
"It's me, the Empress Dowager." Zhao Chengqian's eyes were red as he trotted over and half-knelt in front of the bed.
"It's really...it's really you. Why did you run back to Beijing, kid? Cough cough cough..." The queen's face was pale and she had to pause for a moment before speaking.
"Grandson will tell you later." Zhao Chengqian held the queen's hand and took out a purse from his pocket. It was full of candies, which were given to him by Ruanruan before.
He peeled a candy and put it into the Queen's mouth, "Grandmother, please eat it. I have more here."
"Cough cough cough..." The queen coughed again.
