Chapter 188: Those in charge are confused, but those who are watching can see clearly

Xue Yuanchu was stunned. He looked at the Xirong man in front of him with confusion, his heart full of puzzlement.

"Brother-in-law? Brother-in-law?" He repeated the man's words, a bewildered look on his face. "What are you talking about? When did I become your brother-in-law?"

The man stood up straight, a cynical smile on his face. "My name is Nurhadu. I apologize again for not being able to see my brother-in-law during the Great Zhou trip."

When Xue Yuanchu heard this, he was suddenly filled with anger. He struggled to stand up, but was tightly bound by the ropes on his body.

"It's you! You are the only one who is so foolish as to dream of my little sister. Do you know how much trouble you caused because of your outspoken words to Yu Qian that day?" Xue Yuanchu glared at Nurhadu, with anger flashing in his eyes.

Nurhachi did not get angry but laughed instead. He walked slowly to Xue Yuanchu, squatted down and looked him in the eye.

"Brother-in-law, don't be angry. I'm just stating the truth. Besides, don't think marrying Miss Xue off to a prince or a noble is a good thing. In the Great Zhou, the inner-house conflicts of those noble families are no more gentle than the flashing swords and clashes on the battlefield. You might just be pushing your little sister into the fire pit."

Xue Yuanchu was choked by Nurhadu's words. He naturally knew about the struggles in the inner houses of those wealthy families, but this was the decision of their Xue family, and it was also for the future of the Marquis's Mansion and Shanqiu's happiness.

However, when Nurhadu pointed it out so bluntly, he still felt guilty and uneasy.

"What nonsense are you talking about!" Xue Yuanchu glared at Nurhadu and tried to remain calm. "It's not your turn as an outsider to interfere in the affairs of our Xue family."

"Outsider?" Nurhadu chuckled. "I'm your sister's husband, how can I be considered an outsider? Besides, don't you people of the Great Zhou have a saying that goes, 'Those involved are often confused, while those on the sidelines see more clearly'? I think you're the ones involved, so you can't see the truth clearly."

Xue Yuanchu was so angry at Nurhadu's words that he was speechless. He turned his head away, not wanting to waste any more words with Nurhadu.

Seeing that Xue Yuanchu was speechless, Nurhadu decided to stop. After all, the purpose of his trip was not to compete with the other party.

He stepped forward, took the initiative to untie the hemp ropes that bound Xue Yuanchu's hands and feet, and said in a deep voice: "Follow me!"

Before Xue Yuanchu could ask the reason, Nurhadu helped him up.

Nurhadu seemed to know that he had difficulty moving one of his legs, so he took the opportunity to support one of his arms to lend him some strength.

"Can we ride a horse?" Nurhadu asked, looking at two horses, one black and one white, on the distant hillside.

"Yes, but I can't ride fast!" Xue Yuanchu answered truthfully.

"No problem." Nurhadu nodded to show his acceptance.

When the two men came to the hillside, Xue Yuanchu discovered that there was a group of people at the foot of the hillside. They were holding torches and standing silently.

He hadn't noticed it just now because it was blocked by the hillside.

"What is this?" Xue Yuanchu exclaimed in surprise, because he saw these people and horses guarding grain carts, which were clearly printed with the logo of the Great Zhou military camp.

Nurhadu waved his hand, signaling the team to set off first. He turned to Xue Yuanchu and explained, "I only found these. The rest were distributed by Doziger to his own subordinates."

As he spoke, he reached out to help Xue Yuanchu get on the horse, then he also climbed on the horse and led the team towards Xiguan Town.

Xue Yuanchu was riding on his horse, feeling mixed emotions. He looked back at the carts loaded with grain, and then looked at Nurhadu, the prince of the Western Rong, beside him.

Although he was still angry and confused, Xue Yuanchu had to admit that under the current circumstances, Nurhadu's actions undoubtedly helped them regain some important food and supplies.

"Why are you doing this?" Xue Yuanchu finally couldn't help but ask.

Nurhadu glanced at him, a meaningful smile on his face. "Brother-in-law, why do you think I did this? For your Great Zhou, or for me personally?"

Xue Yuanchu frowned and didn't answer. He really didn't know Nurhadu's motives, but his intuition told him that there must be more complicated reasons behind it.

"Actually, I'm not doing this for the Great Zhou, nor for myself." Nurhadu spoke slowly, a hint of vicissitudes in his voice. "I just want this war to end soon and save the people from suffering."

Xue Yuanchu was stunned. He had never expected Nurha to say such a thing. In his mind, the Xirong people had always been synonymous with barbarity and cruelty, but at this moment, he heard a hint of tenderness and weariness of war in his words.

"War is indeed tiresome." Xue Yuanchu muttered to himself, his eyes looking into the distance, as if he could see the scene of war and displaced people.

"Yes, war brings only pain and destruction," Nurhadu said. "Actually, I don't want to be an enemy of your Great Zhou. It's just that we Xirong people have our own difficulties and frustrations. I hope that one day, we can coexist peacefully and stop killing each other."

Xue Yuanchu was silent for a moment, then turned to look at Nurhadu, "I will remember your words. But if one day we meet on the battlefield again, I will show no mercy."

"Must-not-miss-you." Nurhadu smiled and said nothing more.

The two rode side by side, leading the team forward in the night.

The night was as dark as ink, with sparse stars. On the other side, Guan Yan and Centurion Yu Heng, along with a team of elite cavalry, hurried out of the gate of Xiguan Town. The purpose of their trip was to find Xue Yuanchu, but as soon as they left the city, they encountered an unexpected situation.
