Chapter 11 One-day Tour of the County

The distance from Lushan Village to Songshan County is not close. Generally, villagers of Lushan Village rarely go to the county town, maybe not even once a year. They only go to Dongming Commune between the two. Although it is small, it has everything. The supply and marketing cooperatives and farmers' markets inside can meet the needs of surrounding villages.

It took half an hour to walk to Dongming Commune. Then it was easy to get to Songshan County, just take the bus.

A bus with a blue exterior. The bright blue color turned gray-blue after years of use, and some of the old window glass was broken.

The conductor, with a black bag slung across his shoulder and tickets in his hand, spoke in a voice far louder than a modern speaker: "The bus from Dongming Commune to Beilin City will leave in five minutes. If you want to get on, hurry up and buy your tickets."

Jiang Baizhou brought Song Jiayu over. The ticket seller took a look and asked, "Where are you going?"

"Songshan County." Song Jiayu answered crisply.

The two were dating and exchanged a sticky look.

This made Xiao Li, a new ticket seller, feel very uncomfortable. She didn't even have a partner. She glanced at him and said, "It's 10 cents per person to go to Songshan County."

Jiang Baizhou took out two cents, and the conductor tore off two tickets and gave them to the person, then asked the person behind him in a fierce tone where he was going.

Two people got on the bus, and there were still empty seats as there were few people.

Jiang Baizhou chose a window seat for Song Jiayu to sit in. "Are you carsick?"

"I don't get carsick." Song Jiayu shook her head.

"Then have some candy to sweeten your mouth?" Jiang Baizhou took out a handful of fruit candies from his pocket.

Even if she wasn't carsick, Song Jiayu was still impressed by Jiang Baizhou's thoughtfulness. She picked out an orange fruit candy that tasted like orange soda. She squinted her eyes and said, "Give me the rest when I want to eat it."

Jiang Baizhou also smiled and put the fruit candy back into his pocket.

The road conditions in those days were not very good, and the buses seemed to be falling apart. The frame was shaking, the ground was uneven, and the wheels were bumping. People who didn't have a seat were like noodles, being pulled by the bus driver.

After driving for fifteen minutes, with one stop in between, we arrived at Songshan County.

The people who got off occupied more than half of the bus, but more people from Songshan County got on. They were all heading to Beilin City. Song Jiayu took a look before leaving and saw that the bus had changed from a noodle master to a bun master, with more and more fillings stuffed inside.

If the bus had consciousness, its entire body would probably swell up, indicating "I'm going to vomit."

"Let's go take pictures first."

"OK."

There were no tall buildings in the county town in the 1960s. Most of the houses on the streets were two-story, and there were also one-story buildings. At first glance, the red cross mark on the four-story building of the hospital was more obvious.

Song Jiayu, who came to Songshan County for the first time, followed closely behind Jiang Baizhou.

This is not modern times. Nowadays, there are cameras everywhere and there are human traffickers. Not to mention now, if they are sold to more remote mountainous areas, it would be like crying out to heaven and earth for help.

Except for the main road in the county town, which is relatively wide, the rest are small roads, and we came to a relatively deep alley.

"Xiao Liu Photo Studio?" Song Jiayu read the name of the store, her eyes falling on the photos pasted on the glass. They were very characteristic of that era, all black and white.

"Welcome, comrades. Do you want to take a picture?" asked a middle-aged man who was fiddling with a bulky camera in the store.

"Yes, we want a group photo, and two individual photos."

This was something Song Jiayu and Jiang Baizhou had agreed upon. The group photo would be used as their wedding photo, and the individual photos would be given to each other.

Master Liu took a closer look at the two comrades' faces and said with a little excitement, "It's 80 cents to develop a photo. A large one is 50 cents. Would you two like me to keep the photos and display them in the store? I can give you a lower price."

"No."

Both of them said in unison.

Master Liu felt very sorry that he did not focus his regret on his photography work.

"Yes, come a little closer, don't tilt your head, and you can smile."

As the photographer spoke, Song Jiayu smiled widely, her dimples appeared, and her almond eyes became crescent moons, sweet and beautiful.

Jiang Baizhou moved a little closer to Song Jiayu. His usually cold face now had a clear look on his face. Although he was not smiling, one could tell from his eyes and relaxed posture that he was very happy.

Master Liu sighed after seeing the finished film in advance through his camera.

"What's wrong? Didn't you take the photo well?" Song Jiayu asked.

"That's not the case. I just feel so sorry that such a good photo can't be kept in the store." Master Liu has been taking photos for more than 20 years, and this is the first time he has met someone with such a good match in appearance, temperament and height. The result of the photo is also the most beautiful he has taken in recent years.

"That won't do. I don't want my boyfriend to be admired by other lesbians." Song Jiayu said carelessly.

Jiang Baizhou's eyes were like melting glaciers. Master Liu immediately pressed the button of the camera to take a picture, and just took the picture. "Lady, I think you will like this photo of your partner very much."

"Of course." Song Jiayu replied with a raised eyebrow.

It was Song Jiayu's turn to take pictures. She smiled sweetly at the camera. After taking the pictures, Master Liu said to Jiang Baizhou, "Men, you should keep the pictures of your partner well."

Jiang Baizhou also replied "Of course".

I made an appointment with Master Liu to pick up the photos seven days later. At noon, the two of us went to the county's state-owned restaurant again.

It was just past eleven o'clock, and there were quite a few people coming to eat. Song Jiayu sniffed, and the taste of real food must have come from a Shandong cuisine chef.

"What do you want to eat?" After occupying a table, Jiang Baizhou prepared to go to the window to order.

Song Jiayu looked at the posted menu and said, "Mushu pork, stir-fried pork with scallions, and cabbage with vinegar."

"Okay, wait for me for a moment." Jiang Baizhou went to order food. Maybe because of her good looks, the middle-aged lady who had an impatient look on her face had changed her attitude towards Jiang Baizhou.

"Are you familiar with that auntie?" Song Jiayu asked.

"I'm not familiar with him. Maybe he feels sorry for me." Jiang Baizhou answered casually.

The two of them didn't really want to explore this issue, they just wanted to talk to each other, and soon they started talking about their wedding day.

More than ten minutes later, the aunt at the window called his name and Jiang Baizhou went to bring the food over.

Three plates of dishes with bright colors and delicious taste, and two bowls of rice.

Song Jiayu, who had traveled through time for more than a month, was craving for this dish. She picked up a piece of Mushu pork, which was so delicious that she almost bit off her tongue. Then she took a bite of stir-fried pork with green onions. The meat slices were stir-fried with the flavor of green onions and the mellow pork aroma of this era. It was simply delicious. The remaining vinegar-stirred cabbage was a combination of the crisp and sweet cabbage and the sour vinegar, and it was full of the flavor of stir-frying.

Not only Song Jiayu was concentrating on eating, but Jiang Baizhou was too. Everyone in this state-owned restaurant was the same.

After finishing the meal, Song Jiayu sighed: "This is the chef of the state-owned restaurant."

Jiang Baizhou agreed: "You can also enjoy the food prepared by this chef on your wedding day."

Some to eat, Song Jiayu's eyes lit up, "What do you mean?"
