Chapter 15 His appearance was anything but ordinary.

He Wenxuan stopped after walking a short distance because he saw a familiar face.

The woman who had traveled back with them in the mule cart before, who was also my cousin's landlady.

At this moment, Shiyue was kneeling on a hillside not far from him, where there was a thriving thicket of bushes.

If it weren't for his good hearing and the smell of meat, He Wenxuan felt he probably wouldn't have noticed anyone there even if he walked right past.

Because He Wenxuan is standing on a relatively high ground, he can see Shiyue's actions very clearly even though there is still some distance between them.

Shiyue is kneeling in front of a grave.

She was facing away from He Wenxuan, stroking the tombstone with her hand and muttering something to herself.

Her expression was gentle, and she had a smile on her lips.

Although they were far apart, He Wenxuan couldn't hear what she was muttering.

But from the occasional sound that drifted over, and her expression, one could easily sense her happiness and relaxation.

He Wenxuan was a little surprised by Shiyue's appearance; he couldn't connect her with the formidable woman from the previous night.

If she weren't kneeling there, facing a solitary grave, He Wenxuan would have thought he was seeing a little girl enjoying the company of her parents.

She chattered incessantly with her parents about happy things, occasionally even acting a little spoiled...

Just like when his sister went home for the Chinese New Year and faced his parents.

Thinking of this, He Wenxuan looked at Shiyue again and inexplicably saw a trace of sadness deep in her smiling eyes.

He Wenxuan shook his head violently, feeling that he might have been blown silly by the wind, otherwise where would he have gotten all these random thoughts?

He silently took two steps back, not glancing once more at the porcelain bowls filled with meat, vegetables, and white rice placed in front of the grave.

Although such food was rare in this era, He Wenxuan was not unfamiliar with good things.

He didn't find it particularly strange.

It seems that this woman went to the commune yesterday to buy these offerings for her family.

He didn't disturb Shiyue and quietly returned along the way he came.

Shiyue raised her head from the tombstone and vaguely saw a tall figure in the distance.

His back was as straight as a pine tree, and even though his face was not clearly visible, one could tell that his appearance was extraordinary.

Shiyue recognized that this should be one of the three educated youths from last night, who must have gotten up early and come out for a stroll.

She quickly put away the offering bowls and plates, and then wiped the tombstone again with the dry cloth she had brought.

Shiyue wasn't nervous, and she had no idea that her biggest secret had almost been exposed!

She assumed that He Lixuan had just happened to pass by and had no idea that he had been beside her.

It's not a holiday, so nobody visits the graves.

In addition, according to the villagers' custom, they usually prepare firewood at home well before the weather gets completely cold.

When it's so cold you can't even stick your fingers out, who would run up the mountain?

Everyone's staying home to hibernate!

Shiyue was certain that her actions would not be discovered.

However, unaware that she had just escaped a disaster, Shiyue was in a pretty good mood.

Too lazy to run any further up the mountain, she simply started cutting down the bushes nearby.

There hasn't been a drop of rain or snow since the beginning of winter, and these shrub branches are all dried out, perfect for cutting them down for firewood.

Because Yu Chuxia had joined the family, Shiyue, being cautious, didn't dare put firewood in that room.

Otherwise, how could a young woman like her carry back so much firewood all at once?

She only cut what she could carry on her back.

Even so, the bundle of firewood tied together was almost as tall as her.

Shiyue carried firewood home, only to find no one there.

The courtyard gate was closed from the outside. She pushed the gate open and found a brand new iron lock hanging on Yu Chuxia's house.

She didn't pay any attention, and after stacking the firewood and tidying up, she went into the kitchen to start a fire and cook.

The team delivered three kinds of food to Shiyue, mostly dried sweet potato chips, and a small amount of corn and unhulled rice.

Corn is a good thing for people nowadays; it's saved to make steamed buns. Rice is even more so, and it's saved to eat during the Lunar New Year.

So Shiyue took some dried sweet potatoes and boiled them in water; that was her breakfast.

Although there were still delicious treats in the room that she had exchanged for with red envelopes, Shiyue couldn't bear to eat them all at once.

Anyway, it won't spoil in that little house, so she plans to eat it slowly, little by little.

After cooking the sweet potato porridge, Shiyue took out two wild rapeseed plants that she had dug up yesterday.

After washing it clean, she chopped it into small pieces and then marinated it with a little salt.

After mixing it, she hesitated for a moment, then took out the bowl of braised tofu from the small house, scooped out some red oil, and mixed it with the diced bok choy.

With this touch of chili oil, the diced bok choy looks much better and tastes more appealing.

After preparing the meal, Shiyue cleaned up the kitchen and then carried the food back to her own room.

As soon as I stepped outside, I heard Yu Chuxia chattering in the yard.

Perhaps because she was surrounded by familiar people, Yu Chuxia was no longer as reserved as she had been the night before, and her voice was exceptionally pleasant, like a silver bell.

Shiyue stood at the door and watched Yu Chuxia walk in with two male educated youths.

The two people carried two buckets of water on one shoulder and a bag of grain on the other, while Yu Chuxia held a floral cloth bag in her hands.

Yu Chuxia was clearly surprised to see Shiyue at home. She was stunned for a moment, and then became nervous.

She quickened her pace, walked up to the two male educated youths, and explained to Shiyue, "Sister Shiyue, I asked them to help me carry water and deliver food. They won't be staying here for long."
