The heavy rain lasted for two days and two nights.
The gale-force winds whipped up huge waves that crashed against the reefs, making a tremendous noise that could be heard throughout the entire island.
Whale Island itself is a rocky mountain with a relatively high elevation.
When the island was built, we had already considered the possibility of encountering such strong winds and heavy rains, so most of the buildings are located above the halfway point on the mountain.
It's impossible for it to be flooded by a single heavy rain.
Being stuck indoors in this wind and rain is quite unpleasant.
Because of the heavy rain, the experts stopped going to the experts' building and started working from home in small groups according to their respective projects.
Anyway, all the members of the expert group lived in the same area, not far apart from each other.
The house in Shiyue's family's courtyard that was originally set aside as a canteen for the experts finally found a use.
Now, people come over for meals every now and then, in the morning, noon, and evening.
Of course, while some people come to eat, others will still be so engrossed in their meals that they forget to eat and sleep.
Because they didn't want their wives to deliver food in the rain, He Lixuan and He Liping would take turns coming over to collect the food for the experts and then deliver it to their homes one by one.
Two days later, the rain gradually subsided.
Around four or five o'clock in the afternoon, Shiyue finally saw the long-awaited sun behind the clouds.
Although I only saw a glimpse of it.
She thought the rain was finally going to pass, and breathed a sigh of relief.
Unexpectedly, the rain intensified again that very evening.
The rain started with great force.
The rain pattered on the stones, a sound so loud it hurt your eardrums.
It even woke Shiyue from her dream.
She sat up in bed and instinctively reached out to touch the bed beside her, only to find that the bed next to her was cold and her husband was nowhere to be seen.
"He Lixuan?" she called out groggily.
"Yes, you're awake too?" He Lixuan answered from the outer room.
Shiyue climbed out of bed and then felt a chill on her arm.
This was a feeling she hadn't experienced in a long time.
She rubbed her arms and went to the outer room, where she found her husband standing by the window looking out.
He opened the window a little bit, and the wind whipped up rainwater, soaking the windowsill.
Shiyue shivered from the chill in the wind.
She turned around, went back into the house, grabbed a towel and draped it over herself, then picked up her husband's shirt from the chair and went back out.
After going back and forth like this several times, her sleepiness was long gone.
She handed the shirt to He Lixuan, then stood beside him and looked out the window together.
All I could see outside was darkness; I couldn't make out anything.
But upon closer inspection, you'll find that the rain is no longer just raindrops or streams, but has all merged into a continuous sheet.
It feels like there's a curtain of rain in front of you, and you're standing behind a waterfall.
This feeling made Shiyue feel somewhat uncomfortable.
It made her feel inexplicably insignificant, and a natural sense of awe arose from the bottom of her heart.
"If this rain keeps going on like this, will something happen?" Shiyue asked worriedly.
"It should be fine. I asked Liu Zhan today. He's been on the island for over a year. He said he experienced a similar heavy rain last year, which lasted for more than ten days on and off. After it stopped, everything was fine."
"That's good." Shiyue said, "We have enough food on our island, as long as..."
Before she could finish speaking, a loud bang suddenly came from afar!
Immediately afterwards, she felt a vibration coming from the soles of her feet.
"What's going on? Is it an earthquake?"
"I'll go take a look!"
He Lixuan had already dressed quickly, grabbed a raincoat from the clothes rack, and ran outside.
As Shiyue watched her husband disappear into the rain, she felt a sudden panic in her heart.
She paced around the room twice, feeling uneasy, unsure whether to stand or sit, and was very worried.
With a determined look, Shiyue quickly got dressed and grabbed her raincoat before chasing after them.
As soon as she stepped outside, she saw her second brother, He Lixue, coming out of the house.
Upon seeing her, He Lixue called out through his raincoat, "Shiyue, what are you doing out here? Where's Lixuan?"
"Lixuan has already gone there. Second brother, do you know what happened?"
Shiyue shouted loudly through the heavy rain.
"I don't know, the sound came from the east, over there is a newly built warehouse. You go back, I'll go take a look." He Lixue said as he walked out.
Shiyue didn't say anything more, but she didn't go home either. Instead, she followed behind He Lixue.
They hadn't walked more than a few steps when they saw He Liping, who had also come out after hearing the noise.
The group decided to walk together in the direction from which the sound came.
After a quick march, they hadn't gone far across the parade ground when they heard the faint shouts of soldiers coming from the rain.
This struck them as odd.
They are now quite familiar with the soldiers on the island and know that although these men are young, they are very disciplined.
Even if they encounter any danger, they can remain calm.
This is the first time I've ever heard someone make such a shout.
None of the three spoke, but they quickened their pace.
They climbed another hillside along the path, and then Shiyue heard He Liping, who was walking in front, suddenly shout: "It's collapsed!"
What collapsed?
She looked up instinctively.
When Shiyue looked up, she was startled!
The road ahead has collapsed!
She saw that the warehouse, which had been perfectly fine just a few days ago and contained grain and various dried goods, was now blocked by rocks!
