Chapter 77: Letter of Severance

Shiyue was also surprised to hear Chuxia call him "Second Brother".

She never expected that the person she picked up in the mountains would end up at Chu Xia's house.

Thinking back to He Lixuan and the others' behavior just now, it all seems normal now.

She quickly ladled out a bowl of millet porridge, added a spoonful of brown sugar, and then brought it over.

The man had been placed on Chu Xia's bed, but he was still unconscious.

The straps binding his hands, feet, and eyes had long since been removed.

Even though Chu Xia is usually very clean, she didn't mind his dirtiness at this moment. She squatted down next to him, covered her mouth with her hand, and sobbed softly.

Between sobs, she tugged at He Lixuan's sleeve, choking out, "Third Brother, why is Second Brother here? Is Second Brother alright? What if Auntie finds out...?"

"Stop making a fuss. Aren't you annoyed enough by Brother Xuan? Go away."

Jiang Dong, who was standing next to her, was so fed up with Chu Xia's crying that he pushed her aside and took her place.

Chu Xia pouted, feeling wronged, but didn't dare to argue.

At this moment, Ye Puan had already seen Shi Yue enter.

He stepped forward and took the bowl of porridge from Shiyue, lowering his voice to say, "Thank you, Shiyue. We will remember this kindness! If it weren't for you today, Lixue might have been in big trouble."

He dared not say he would die, but the scene he saw on the mountain was something that even he, let alone He Lixuan, dared not recall.

The thought of seeing Li Xue lying behind a pile of firewood, covered in blood, his hands and feet bound, his face as pale as paper, still sends chills down Ye Pu'an's spine.

And the look in her eyes when she looked at Shiyue was filled with even more gratitude.

Shiyue didn't pay attention to Ye Puan's expression of gratitude.

Upon hearing the name "Brother Lixue," she keenly sensed that something was amiss.

She subconsciously looked at the man who had been squatting by the bedside without saying a word since she entered the room, and then realized that his complexion was not much different from that of the person lying on the bed.

He was as white as a dead person.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Shi Yue looked at Ye Pu'an and asked, "Who is this person? I heard Chu Xia call him Second Brother?"

Having already carried the person to Shiyue's house, Ye Puan naturally wouldn't hide it anymore.

He whispered, "That's Lixuan's second brother, Chuxia's second cousin."

Hearing that it was exactly as she had thought, Shiyue's hands tightened, and she subconsciously clenched them into fists.

On the way back to the provincial capital, He Lixuan told her about his family's situation.

Upon learning that his parents were both university professors, and that his father was a university president like Uncle Shen, Shiyue couldn't help but worry for the family.

However, they later met Song Wen in the provincial capital, and Song Wen, as He Lixuan's father's student, was obviously living a very good life.

At the same time, Song Wen's relaxed tone also suggests that He Lixuan's parents were at least safe at the time.

So Shiyue felt relieved and stopped thinking about their family's affairs.

But now—

Looking at the person lying on the bed, Shiyue was certain that he would be in the countryside for quite some time.

Otherwise, things wouldn't have turned out this way.

But if he were He Lixuan's second brother, how could He Lixuan not know that his second brother was here?

How could he possibly disregard his second brother and live a carefree life without any pressure?

Seemingly sensing Shi Yue's inner thoughts, He Lixuan, who had been squatting by the bed in a daze, silently stood up.

He ignored the several pairs of eyes that were staring at him, walked to Shiyue's side and said to her, "Come out with me for a moment, I have something I want to talk to you about."

"Okay." It just so happens that Shiyue also has many questions she wants to ask.

The two walked back to the kitchen.

The stew was ready in a large pot, emitting a wonderful aroma of meat.

As soon as they entered, the two were enveloped by the warm, comforting aroma.

But neither of them had any appetite at the moment.

As soon as He Lixuan sat down, he spoke frankly: "You saved my second brother He Lixue today. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have known that he was so close to me."

This realization clearly caused He Lixuan immense pain.

Perhaps thinking of his second brother's life, he was so distressed that he couldn't even speak.

He lowered his head, grabbed his hair, and remained silent for a long time.

Shiyue pushed a bowl of water that had been left to cool down earlier over to her: "Have some water before you talk. It's warm. You've been running around for half a day and even carried people down. You must be exhausted."

Don't think that carrying someone down the mountain is an easy task.

This person is much harder to carry than firewood.

The mountain road is narrow, and even a thin man would weigh over 100 pounds, especially if he was sick. He couldn't afford to bump or fall.

Those three must have been exhausted to get the person down.

He Lixuan did not refuse, and took small sips of water while adjusting his emotions.

After finishing the bowl of water, he regained his composure.

Then he looked up at Shiyue earnestly and said, "Shiyue, I want to ask you for a favor. Let my brother stay at your house for a few days, just a few days. Let him stay in Chuxia's room first, and then I'll try to get Song Wen to take him away."

Shiyue learned from He Lixuan's narration that his second brother, He Lixue, was a well-known mathematical genius in the circle.

He published a paper when he was fifteen years old, which caused a sensation in the field.

He was eventually admitted by his mentor despite not meeting the usual requirements, and went to university in the capital before he was even sixteen.

He studied under the very famous mathematician Liang Rong and became his student.

The second brother was once the pride of their family and a role model for He Lixuan.

He was able to get into university at the age of seventeen, becoming the youngest student in his school, all because he was determined to catch up with his second brother.
