Guan Jin originally thought that with her father's friend's intervention, her problem with Jiang Lin would be resolved. However, when Vice Minister Hao returned, he called her into his office and gave her a severe scolding.
"Are you and your dad treating me like a fool? You know perfectly well why Comrade Jiang Lin divorced you. Go back and honestly hand over his salary and savings, and hurry up and get the divorce certificate. Otherwise, you can expect someone from a higher level to come after you."
Furthermore, they know perfectly well what you did with their money. If this isn't dealt with, you'll lose your job, your older brother and sister-in-law's jobs, and even your parents will be waiting for a summons from the Revolutionary Committee. Tell your dad that I'm done with him and he shouldn't come to my house again.
Guan Jin's expression changed, and she wanted to say something more, but Vice Minister Hao got angry and pushed her out the door: "Get out of here, you're such bad luck."
When Guan Jin saw that her colleagues, who had heard the commotion, had come out to see what was going on, she covered her face and ran away.
Without even asking for leave, she went home: "Mom and Dad, Uncle Hao scolded me. He kicked me out and said that Dad should never come to his house again."
Guan Yong and Zhao Yafang's faces immediately fell: "What does Lao Hao mean? He took my benefits, but he didn't get the job done and now he's trying to distance himself from me?"
Guan Jin repeated what Vice Minister Hao had said: "Dad, what did you do with my money? Uncle Hao said the army knows about it, and that if we don't resolve this matter, the Revolutionary Committee will invite us for a talk."
Guan Yong suddenly stood up and paced back and forth in the living room: "Ya Fang, go and get the bankbook. Didn't Jiang Lin want his savings? Give it to him. Let's get a divorce."
Zhao Yafang hesitated, unwilling to give up. So much money, it would hurt to think about taking it out of her pocket again after it had gone in.
"Go now." Guan Yong glared.
Zhao Yafang stormed upstairs, and Guan Jin finally realized what was happening: "Dad, I won't get a divorce. Why would I want a divorce? I have two sons. Jiang Lin makes so much money every month. I don't want a divorce."
"You say you won't get a divorce, so why didn't you do it earlier? I told you to win Jiang Lin's heart, and then everything he had would be yours. What did you do? All you did was send him some things every month, which weren't worth much. Now look what happened, you picked up a sesame seed and lost a watermelon. You don't get a divorce, but do you even have the final say?"
Guan Yong was as anxious as an ant on a hot pan, fearing that the Revolutionary Committee would come and arrest him at any moment. He had spent a lot of money trying to pull strings to get back to his post, but to no avail.
I didn't expect the military to have found out about this. If I keep holding onto Jiang Lin, I'm afraid I'll be finished. At least for now, he can still enjoy his retirement benefits.
Guan Jin hadn't expected her father to say that. What should she do now...?
“Jiang Lin and I used to be very good friends. It’s all because of you, it’s all because of you. You’re the ones who always tell me that Jiang Lin’s money is my money and I can’t let others have it for free. It’s all because of you that my relationship with Jiang Lin has become worse and worse.”
Guan Jin didn't want to divorce Jiang Lin. She realized that her parents didn't care about her life or death at all; they only cared about themselves.
Guan Jin's outburst enraged Guan Yong and Zhao Yafang. Zhao Yafang stepped forward and slapped her daughter: "Are you awake yet? We are your parents. Who gave you permission to talk to me like that? You have no ability and you still blame us. We didn't want you to marry Jiang Lin, but you insisted on marrying him. If you had married that Zhao Liang, none of this would have happened."
Guan Jin stared blankly at her mother. This was the first time her mother had hit her. Before, her mother would always gently tell her that her parents were the best people to her and the least likely to hurt her. She would tell her that as long as she was obedient, the family would do whatever she wanted.
She used to think she was loved by her parents more than her older brother, but now she understands that everything her parents did was for her brother. Whatever her brother wanted, her parents would always criticize him in front of her, and then they would turn around and make up for it.
Why did they do this? To brainwash their daughter so that she would listen to them in everything. She didn't want her to marry Jiang Lin before because she looked down on his rank. But after Jiang Lin was promoted very quickly, they started whispering things in her ear to make her drift apart from Jiang Lin.
Guan Jin laughed, a desolate and miserable laugh, then glared fiercely at her mother: "You've been lying to me for over twenty years, feeling good, huh? Do you think I'm stupid and easy to fool?"
Seeing the look in her daughter's eyes, Zhao Yafang's heart tightened. Afraid that her daughter would become angry, she quickly tried to coax her, "Jin'er, I'm sorry, Mom didn't mean it. Mom was just frightened by Jiang Lin."
"Enough! Do you still think I'm stupid? I'm telling you, give me back all the wages I've handed over over the years, the dowry Jiang Lin gave me, and all those red envelopes. Not a single penny less. Otherwise, I'll expose your embezzlement and bribery, and how your son caused someone's death."
Zhao Yafang and Guan Yong looked at her as if she were crazy: "Guan Jin, do you know what you're saying? Huh? I'm your father, what good will it do you if I'm in trouble?"
"If I'm estranged from Jiang Lin and now we're getting a divorce, what good will that do you? You've hurt me to this point, and you still want to keep coaxing me, taking my salary and savings to support your son and grandson? Are you thinking that even if we get a divorce, it's okay, you can just marry me off to someone older and with a higher position, so I can continue to feed you?"
Guan Jin's words struck a chord with Zhao Yafang and Guan Yong. They were indeed thinking the same thing: what was wrong with their daughter? How did she suddenly become so insightful?
Looking at their expressions, Guan Jin guessed that she had guessed right again: "Hahaha, how pathetic and laughable. I'll give you ten minutes to return every penny of my money. Otherwise, unless you kill me, we'll all go to hell together."
Guan Yong and Zhao Yafang exchanged a glance, still trying to coax Guan Jin, but Guan Jin wouldn't fall for it. Selfishness is something truly ingrained in their genes.
Once she figured things out, how could Guan Jin possibly continue to be a fool and let these people leech off her? She was inherently a selfish person.
"Eight minutes left." Guan Jin's eyes were bloodshot, and she looked at her parents with a mocking smile.
Zhao Yafang never expected that her precious daughter would one day be out of control. She was so angry that she wanted to bite her teeth off, but she still took what Guan Jin wanted at her husband's prompting.
Thinking of that huge sum of money, Zhao Yafang's heart ached. It was a lot of money. Since Guan Jin started working, she only kept ten yuan for herself each month, just enough to get by, and gave the rest to her parents.
Zhao Yafang coaxed her, "Mom will save it for you. When you get married, you can take it all back with you as part of your dowry. Mom will also add to your dowry. I guarantee you will have a grand wedding."
But when she got married, her mother said, "Daughter, this money should still be kept by me. I'll even keep the dowry Jiang Lin gave you safe. If Jiang Lin ever mistreats you, these are your safety net."
