"Oh dear, sis, you brought these things here, but that kid Stone snatched them all away. He's from Sichuan province, and he loves spicy food the most."
"Hey, I know you like sweets, so I bought you some of every flavor. You can eat them when you're free. You can also put beef jerky and pork slices in them, so you can take them with you on missions. Just treat them like your compressed rations."
Jiang Lin looked at the bed full of things, and his heart felt heavy, a weight from the love of family.
"Sis, please don't send me so much stuff next time. I have everything I need in the army."
Jiang Ruyu knew her younger brother didn't want to be a burden on the family: "Are you stupid? It's just me and Grandma in our family now. You know what our situation is. I have a salary, you have subsidies, and your brother is working full points every day now. I only send you this much stuff every month, and there are some things from Grandpa and Aunt. It's not much money. Don't worry about it. Just take care of yourself."
Jiang Lin opened his mouth to retort, but then he saw his sister staring at him with wide eyes, so he quickly changed the words he was about to say: "What's that package? Sis, did you bring the whole house here?"
Jiang Ruyu slapped his hand that was pointing at the package, annoyed: "That's for your brother. After we've seen you, we're going to continue south to see Jiang Hui."
Jiang Lin's eyes widened and he gave a thumbs up: "Sis, you're really amazing! You managed to run so far without Grandma stopping you. No wonder Brother Yang followed you. It's a pity I don't have a vacation, otherwise I would have gone with you to take a look."
"You should train your skills diligently. Every day of training off the battlefield is to help you survive better on the battlefield. We don't expect you to climb very high; we just hope you'll be alright no matter what."
Danger and opportunity coexist. Jiang Lin is young and ambitious, and he would never be content to be just an ordinary soldier.
Watching Jiang Lin neatly organize everything he brought, Jiang Ruyu felt a mix of relief and heartache at the same time, admiring her younger brother's growth.
"Come on, sis, I'll take you to the guesthouse, and then we'll go to the canteen. I'm quite familiar with the head cook, all because of your few bottles of sauce and cured meat and sausages. I always ask him to help me with extra meals, and of course he's eaten quite a bit too. He really misses your cooking."
As Jiang Ruyu listened to her younger brother talk about his daily life in the army, Zheng Yang listened to the siblings with a smile. From the day he decided that Jiang Ruyu was the one he cared about most, he knew that Ruyu cared about her two younger brothers the most. She was such a strong-willed person, so she would definitely worry about her brothers' affairs. Therefore, he had to accept that his wife would take care of her family more.
Fortunately, he didn't have the typical chauvinistic ideas prevalent among men today, who believe that once a woman gets married, she should only care about her husband's family and not interfere in her own family's affairs, or have ideas like "a married daughter is like water spilled from a cup," which would disrupt family harmony.
Upon arriving at the guesthouse, Jiang Lin presented his military officer's ID, while Jiang Ruyu and the others presented their letters of introduction. They quickly booked two rooms and went to their rooms using the keys.
Both rooms face south, have windows, and are quite large. They are very clean, and the blankets are neatly folded.
"Your guesthouse is built to military standards."
"Maybe, I don't know." Jiang Lin scratched his head: "At the end of the corridor is the tea room, where you can get hot water. There's also a public bathhouse at the other end of the corridor, but it's not heated now."
"Alright, we know. Go back and see if anyone is looking for you. Let's wash up first; we haven't showered for days and we smell."
"Okay, Yang-ge, I'll head back now. I'll take you guys out for dinner later tonight."
"Okay, you can go ahead and do your work."
Jiang Ruyu watched her younger brother leave before letting out a long sigh and sitting down in a chair. Zheng Yang came over and took her hand: "Feeling sorry for him?"
Jiang Ruyu gave a bitter smile: "How can I not feel sorry for him? He's the most childish one at home, like a child who never grows up. Look, it's only been a little over a year, and the calluses on his hands are already so thick. He doesn't even want me to see them."
"Try to think positively, change your perspective. Jiang Lin's actions show that he has grown up, and it makes you and Grandma feel more at ease, doesn't it?" This was the only way Zheng Yang could comfort his partner.
"Sigh, you're right. Okay, that's enough. You should go wash up and rest for a while." Jiang Ruyu suddenly thought of something and sent Zheng Yang away.
After Zheng Yang left, she opened the several positioning chips lying in her system backpack. She thought, "This is the time to use these."
Placing the tracking chip on Jiang Lin wasn't for surveillance; it was simply to know his safety at any time. Because once the chip is implanted, it's absorbed by the body, allowing her to know if the person is alive. That's all she needs to know.
After they had showered and changed their clothes, and washed the clothes they had taken off, Jiang Lin came running over.
"Sis, let's go, Yang. I'll take you to our cafeteria for dinner."
Jiang Ruyu followed Jiang Lin with the money and tickets, and Zheng Yang followed behind. He was also very curious about the military camp. If it weren't for his special family situation, he might have been one of them.
Jiang Lin led his sister and brother-in-law into the cafeteria, and many people turned to look at them. Jiang Ruyu had never been looked at so directly by so many young men before, and she felt a little uncomfortable for a moment.
Just then, a few people stood up at a table not far away: "Old Jiang, come quick, there are seats here, come quick."
"Come on, sis, you guys go sit over there first. Those are my roommates and comrades-in-arms." Jiang Lin pulled his sister toward his comrades-in-arms.
As he approached, Jiang Lin introduced his sister to his brothers: "This is my sister. The delicious meat sauce you all often talk about is made by my sister. Sister, this is Shi Tou from Sichuan Province, that's Ma Que from Yunnan Province, and this is Bai Tiao from Anhui Province. He's from our grandmother's hometown."
Jiang Ruyu smiled a little awkwardly: "Hello, I am Jiang Ruyu, Jiang Lin's older sister. It's nice to meet you."
Shi Tou and the others were all quite young and had joined the army at the same time as Jiang Lin: "Hello, sister, don't be shy, please sit down."
Jiang Lin then introduced Zheng Yang: "This is my brother-in-law. They got married this Chinese New Year, and my brother-in-law accompanied my sister to visit me."
Zheng Yang was satisfied with Jiang Lin's introduction. He was finally acknowledged as his brother-in-law, even though they had never called him that to his face. He knew the complicated feelings his two brothers-in-law had for him. He didn't think his brother-in-law would be very happy if Xiaoyue were getting married.
Jiang Ruyu had a meal with Jiang Lin's good friend. She also got to try the canteen food. It was communal cooking, so the taste was so-so, but it was filling.
After dinner, Jiang Lin saw his brother-in-law off at the guesthouse entrance: "Sis, tomorrow I'll take you around the island. You can pick mushrooms, dig wild vegetables, and bamboo shoots on the back mountain. You can also hunt. You can also go beachcombing on the beach and reefs. Tomorrow I'll go to the logistics department to buy some charcoal and seasonings. How about we go on a picnic? I know a great place where we can hunt and go beachcombing."
