Chapter 62 Mailing, Expensive Postage, Sable (2/2)

I'm a little disappointed, but there's nothing I can do about it.

Transportation is difficult and slow these days.

Fortunately, there are also many yellow peaches in the south, in North China, Central China, and Southwest China, especially in the southern regions.

Because it was difficult to transport, this fresh fruit was not widely consumed until the development of the express delivery industry in later generations.

To be honest, Gu Yunyang himself doesn't really like canned food; he prefers the taste of fresh fruit.

The South has a wide variety and large quantity of fresh fruits.

Gu Yunyang particularly enjoys eating tropical fruits such as lychee, longan, jackfruit, pineapple, mangosteen, mango, rambutan, guava, and custard apple.

Except for durian.

The king of fruits has a rather strong smell, and Gu Yunyang can't quite stand it.

But many people like it, so he might consider getting some later, as it could fetch a high price.

He bought another batch of needles, thread, and other small items, as well as various daily necessities.

Enameled basins, aluminum lunch boxes, etc.

After leaving the supply and marketing cooperative, Gu Yunyang hadn't walked far when he spotted a person acting suspiciously.

He subconsciously wondered if the other person was another secret agent.

But upon closer reflection, I realized I shouldn't be that unlucky, or so lucky as to encounter such things every day, right?

The other person was carrying a basket on their back and making some noise; they looked like an old farmer.

A slight noise came from the basket, and Gu Yunyang immediately realized that it was wild animal.

That voice... it sounds a bit like a sable's.

In later generations, sable was a first-class protected animal, and its slaughter was prohibited. It was the source of precious furs for noblewomen.

Sable, ginseng, and deer antler are known as the three treasures of Northeast China.

Gu Yunyang has already collected the latter two; he's only missing the sable.

Gu Yunyang followed the other person to a secluded alley, immediately stepped forward to greet them, and whispered, "Are you selling this sable?"

The other party was startled, but when they turned around and saw Gu Yunyang's appearance, he looked young and fresh-faced, and didn't seem like an official.

Gu Yunyang insisted that the item in the basket was a sable, and then added, "I just wanted to buy a sable for my grandma so I could skin it and make knee pads. It's quite cold today."

Judging from Gu Yunyang's appearance, the other party didn't seem like they could come up with money. Could they really be there to ambush him?

That shouldn't be the case. If it were, those people hiding in the shadows would just come out and ambush him.

They stole everything.

Gu Yunyang noticed the other party's hesitation and took out four ten-yuan bills: "Look, Uncle, I really intend to buy it."

The other party, still somewhat skeptical, led Gu Yunyang to a courtyard further inside, uncovered the tattered cloth covering the basket, and said, "Look, there are quite a few, but they're all small. They definitely won't survive if you try to raise them. These sables are only about a pound and a half each, and they're still small. If you piece together their fur, you could make a pair of knee pads. Do you want them? Forty yuan, take them."

This was clearly because they had their eye on the four large bills that Gu Yunyang had previously presented.

Gu Yunyang looked inside and saw that there were four in total, one of which was female. If they were raised, they should be able to reproduce.

But he wasn't a fool with too much money: "Twenty yuan."

The old farmer said with a bitter face, "Young man, you're not cutting the price in half."

Gu Yunyang said with a grin, "Well, you're not really asking for a high price, are you? This is all the money I have. Don't try to bargain, how about 22?"

"38, that's the lowest I can go. This mink fur is very valuable."

After some back and forth, the deal was finally settled at 28 yuan, which wasn't exactly cheap, but it was still relatively inexpensive.

If these sables weren't so small and their fur wasn't pieced together, the price wouldn't be so cheap.

After paying, Gu Yunyang took the sable and its basket with him, as they had agreed upon.

After coming out, Gu Yunyang quickly put himself back into the base space while no one was looking and arranged for the housekeeping robot to get some small fish for them to eat.

He found a state-run restaurant and ate a plate of sweet and sour pork, a plate of chicken stew with mushrooms, and a plate of stir-fried potatoes, green peppers, and eggplant.

"Not bad. We'll pack a few more dishes to take with us later. We'll skip the rice; homemade rice is better. We'll make more so it can last a long time."
