Chapter 1 Under the Qilian Mountains

Early spring, 1966.

In the Great Northwest, at the foot of the Qilian Mountains.

A military green Jiefang truck, carrying three women and two children, was heading northwest.

Achoo!

It was terribly cold. Lu Fangfang, who was in the car, raised her arm and wiped her nose.

She glanced at the shiny floral sleeves on her arms, and her face turned bright red.

It wasn't from embarrassment, it was from the cold!

Not only her face, but her nose is also burning from the prolonged friction.

"The Northwest is really cold."

Lu Fangfang put her hands behind her back and curled up in the corner of the car.

She looked up at the distant snow-capped mountains and felt good.

She had lived by the sea in her past life, and this was her first time in Northwest China, seeing the white snow-capped mountains.

Yes, Lu Fangfang is a time traveler!

She traveled from the 21st century to the 1960s, into the body of someone with the same name.

Speaking of the original owner, "Lu Fangfang," she also had a hard life. There was a famine in her hometown, and there was really nothing to eat in the countryside.

Her family had no choice but to get a letter of introduction from the brigade, which allowed her to travel 2,000 kilometers to the Qilian Mountains to stay with her fiancé, with whom she had been betrothed since childhood.

The original owner, bewildered, rode in a horse-drawn carriage to the county town, and then took a car to Zeng City.

She intended to take the train from Zeng City to Gansu Province, but as soon as she arrived at the train station, she lost the handkerchief containing her money and food coupons.

The original owner was so angry and anxious that he died.

Lu Fangfang, who had traveled through time, was stunned for a long time and thought about it all night before deciding to continue her journey to the Qilian Mountains.

The "movement" has only just begun, so staying in the ranks is much better than being in the countryside.

But she had no money or tickets, and was afraid of being deported, so she dared not go to the government and had no choice but to beg all the way.

Foraging for wild vegetables, drinking river water, and sleeping in the wilderness, Lu Fangfang had experience in hiking and exploration. After a month of walking, she finally reached the border of Gansu Province.

Gansu Province is too big. If you continue westward, the road is too desolate, and there are even wolves in the wild.

Upon arriving here, Lu Fangfang dared not continue traveling alone. She went to the Weixian Armed Forces Department and, with a photo of her fiancé in military uniform and a letter of introduction, begged for a train ticket.

Yesterday, she took the train and finally arrived in Minle County.

Her fiancé's military base is located at the foot of the Qilian Mountains, not far from Minle County.

Lu Fangfang skillfully found the Armed Forces Department of Minle County and was arranged to stay in a guesthouse for the night.

The next day, she and the two military wives boarded a car to the military base.

Thinking back on the past month, Lu Fangfang felt like crying and laughing at the same time.

From the eastern coast of the motherland to the Northwest, Lu Fangfang went through countless hardships and finally arrived.

"I don't know what kind of person he is. Now that we're here, we can only take it one step at a time."

She pursed her chapped lips and took out a black and white photograph from her bundle.

She gently rubbed it, and became quite engrossed in watching it.

In the photo, the man sits on horseback with a clear and resolute gaze. Behind him are vast grasslands and towering snow-capped mountains.

This photo of him in military uniform helped Lu Fangfang a lot along the way.

To exaggerate a bit, it would be easier for her to beg for food if she had this photo of herself in military uniform.

This photo in military uniform saved her life!

...

"Girl, it's so cold outside, you're wearing too little. I have a thick coat here, put it on to keep out the wind."

Lu Fangfang snapped out of her daze and subconsciously waved her hand, "No need, big sister, don't trouble yourself."

Across from me sat a middle-aged woman in her thirties or forties, who was untying a bundle from her arms.

Hearing Lu Fangfang's words, she smiled and said, "It's no trouble at all, just don't mind that my jacket is old."

As she spoke, she took a blue overcoat out of her bundle and handed it over.

"..."

Lu Fangfang was touched and accepted it with both hands.

The wind blowing down from the snow-capped mountain was so cold that she unfolded her coat and put it on.

Rubbing her hands together, Lu Fangfang said sincerely, "Thank you, big sister."

"It's okay. When I look at you, I feel like you're my little sister."

"By the way, my name is Wang Shufen. I'm bringing my child to stay with my husband. Sister, are you also going to join him in the army?"

Wang Shufen looked at her curiously.

To be honest, the girl across from me looked like a refugee from famine, not quite like a military dependent.

"Big sister, my name is Lu Fangfang, you can just call me Fangfang."

Lu Fangfang hesitated for a moment, unsure whether she was considered to be accompanying a soldier.

After a long pause, she shook her head and said, "I'm going to find my fiancé."

Wang Shufen's eyes lit up, and she pointed to another woman in the carriage, "Oh my, what a coincidence! Fangfang, you and Hai Mei are both going to find your fiancés, what a coincidence!"

"Um?"

Upon hearing Wang Shufen's words, Zhu Haiming, who was standing next to her, opened her eyes.

She looked Lu Fangfang up and down.

Yellow old-fashioned headscarf, red tattered cotton-padded jacket, black trousers with patches, and cloth shoes with exposed toes.

Judging from his clothes, you can tell he comes from the countryside.

Zhu Haiming shook her head, then looked at her face again, and hummed...

With her sallow face, thin body, and tall stature, she looked exactly like a bamboo pole.

Tsk, just a young girl, not worth mentioning.

However, her little hands were very fair, which was strange.

Lu Fangfang felt uneasy under their gaze.

Looking down at herself, she quickly pulled her exposed big toe back.

"Lu Fangfang, right? There are policies regarding women accompanying military personnel. The man must be at least a battalion-level officer. The families of ordinary soldiers cannot accompany them. You weren't deceived by a man, were you?"
