After lunch, the investigation team drove the two men in a jeep towards the military region. It was already past ten o'clock.
The road to the provincial capital was difficult to travel. In those days, it was all dirt roads with potholes from time to time, making for a very bumpy ride.
Lu Fangfang, sitting in the back seat of the car, almost threw up all the food she had just eaten.
"Comrade, could you please open the car window? I'm feeling a bit carsick."
The members of the investigation team turned and glanced at her.
Seeing that she was pale, he reached out and opened the car window.
After walking for a while, Lu Fangfang's forehead was covered in sweat.
She endured it for a while, but couldn't take it anymore, and quickly said, "Comrade, could we switch seats? Let me go to the window side? I feel a little nauseous."
Team Leader Zhang sat in the front row, resting with his eyes closed.
Hearing this, he turned around and scolded, "Lu Fangfang, you've been causing trouble the whole way. When will you stop? Can't you just shut up for a second?"
"vomit……"
Lu Fangfang covered her mouth, feeling extremely uncomfortable.
After a while, she said weakly, "Comrade Zhang, if I throw up in the car later, don't blame me."
Team Leader Zhang frowned and examined it carefully.
Seeing that Lu Fangfang didn't seem to be faking it, he cursed under his breath and had no choice but to have the driver stop temporarily so that the two people in the back could switch places.
After a while, the jeep started moving again.
Lu Fangfang rested her head on the car window, feeling the wind blowing in her face, which made her feel a little better.
In this day and age, there are only a few cars on the road, so there's not much danger if your head is outside the car window.
She leaned against the car window, closed her eyes, and drifted off to sleep.
In her sleep, Lu Fangfang seemed to hear the sound of horses' hooves.
"Boom!"
"Attention, everyone! Full speed ahead! Stop the car in front!"
"Giddy up!"
"Giddy up!"
"Giddy up!"
A group of soldiers in green uniforms, riding military horses, sped past the jeep on both sides and then slowly stopped in front of it.
"squeak."
The driver slammed on the brakes, bringing the horse to a stop just in front of him.
"Bang!"
"Ouch."
The people in the jeep instinctively lurched forward.
"You bastards, are you out of your minds? Which unit are you from? Do you even know who we are?"
The driver got out of the car and started cursing angrily.
Several mounted warriors, without saying a word, immediately subdued him.
The other members of the investigation team in the car immediately drew their guns and watched them warily.
Lu Fangfang covered her head, woken up by the impact, and turned to look out the car window in confusion.
"Um?"
She was a little confused, rubbed her eyes, and looked over again.
"Giddy up!"
Zhuang Mingcheng rode his chestnut horse and slowly walked forward.
His face darkened as he looked at the handcuffs on his fiancée's wrists.
"Comrades, we are from the Political Department of the Military Region. Which unit are you from? Why are you stopping us? Do you know the consequences of doing this?"
Team Leader Zhang limped to the front of the warhorse.
Zhuang Mingcheng, mounted on his warhorse, looked down at him.
"Remove the handcuffs."
"Comrade, which unit are you from? We're from the Political Department of the Military Region!"
Zhuang Mingcheng nudged the horse's belly with his heel.
The chestnut horse took two steps forward and snorted at Team Leader Zhang.
Team Leader Zhang instinctively stepped back, his face turning pale and then flushed.
Looking around, he saw hundreds of soldiers and hundreds of warhorses nearby, and he suppressed his anger.
Zhuang Mingcheng held his saber, pointed it at Lu Fangfang's wrist, and said the same thing again, "Unlock the handcuffs."
"you……"
"Open!"
Team Leader Zhang could only wave his hand in frustration.
The members of the investigation team immediately took out keys and removed the handcuffs from Lu Fangfang's wrists.
Lu Fangfang stared at him blankly, feeling like crying.
"Zhuang Mingcheng."
Beside her, Zhu Haiming let out a scream.
"Zhuang Mingcheng?"
Team Leader Zhang was stunned when he heard this, then suddenly realized something. Wasn't this the person he was looking for?
With him, why would he need Lu Fangfang? He was overjoyed.
"So, you're Zhuang Mingcheng. You're just a lowly battalion commander, yet you dare to stop a car belonging to the military region's political department! You have some nerve!"
Finally, Team Leader Zhang let out a loud shout.
Zhuang Mingcheng glanced at Team Leader Zhang, then nudged the chestnut horse.
"Giddy up!"
The chestnut horse charged straight at Team Leader Zhang.
"You dare!"
Team Leader Zhang stood rooted to the spot.
Just as they were about to collide, he twitched his eyebrows, but ultimately stepped aside.
"You...you..."
The chestnut horse didn't stop and continued walking until it reached the jeep's door.
Zhuang Mingcheng, mounted on horseback, stretched out his hand to Lu Fangfang, "I'm late."
Lu Fangfang looked at him and took his hand.
Zhuang Mingcheng pulled Lu Fangfang from the car onto the horse.
With a tug on the reins, the chestnut horse turned around, carrying the two of them, and headed back.
Seeing this, Team Leader Zhang was furious.
Damn it!
This cavalry regiment at the foot of the Qilian Mountains is incredibly arrogant; they completely disregard their political department.
"Comrade Zhuang Mingcheng! Do you know what you're doing? Openly stopping the Political Department's vehicle and abducting prisoners from the Political Department—this is a counter-revolutionary act, punishable by execution! How dare you!"
The rest of the investigation team immediately drew their guns and stepped forward.
"Come back, let them go. Hmph, I'd like to see if he has the guts!"
Zhuang Mingcheng rode on horseback, holding Lu Fangfang in his arms.
