Lu Fangfang spent the whole afternoon peeling only a third of the large pile of corn in the yard.
Seeing that it was getting late, she tied up the husked corn one by one.
Stacks of corn like this, piled up on the wall, make it easier to dry.
As for rats and such, she wasn't worried at all.
Since Xiaohua and the little Tibetan fox came into the house, there have been no more mice in the house, and even the birds that fly in the sky dare not land in her house.
Just as he was busy, Zhuang Mingcheng pushed open the courtyard gate and returned carrying a lunchbox.
Seeing his wife tying corn, he quickly walked over and bent down to help.
"Fangfang, is this the corn you planted in the field by the river? You harvested quite a lot; it looks like enough to feed the chickens and ducks at home for a year."
"Yeah, they're not growing very well. There's not enough fertilizer, and a lot of the corn kernels are shriveled."
Lu Fangfang touched the sparse corn kernels and sighed helplessly.
She has a lot of poultry at home this year, so she's collecting more manure to plant next year; things should be better then.
Zhuang Mingcheng picked one up and looked at it, and also felt it was a bit of a pity.
"Fertilizer?"
He seemed thoughtful, and kept the matter in mind.
"Mingcheng, stop tying them. Just put all these corn cobs on the wall."
"OK."
Zhuang Mingcheng picked up a bundle of corn cobs and went to the east wall to place them one by one.
He's tall, and if he stands on a chair, he can easily reach the top of the wall.
"Mingcheng, how's the spy operation going? Any results?"
Zhuang Mingcheng paused, then nodded.
"The spy who escaped confessed everything before he could even be interrogated. He was terrified after being bitten by Xiaohua and the little yellow dog, and then shot by you. He was shaking all over when he woke up."
"Serves you right." Lu Fangfang laughed when she heard this.
That's how you treat spies. Treat prisoners well, but only those who cooperate.
She picked up a bundle of corn, walked to the wall, and handed it to her husband.
Still somewhat curious, she asked, "What about Liu Erkui and Xiao Ting?"
"The investigation is still ongoing. Those two shouldn't be... shouldn't be accomplices of spies, but even if it wasn't intentional, they were seriously negligent and will be dealt with severely."
"If it's not bad, then it's stupid."
Lu Fangfang muttered something to herself.
Based on her understanding of Xiao Ting, she knew that this person wasn't so kind, let alone towards spies.
Liu Erkui is a possibility, though; he's a complete hypocrite.
However, without evidence, she cannot make such a statement lightly.
"Fangfang, I have something to tell you."
Hearing that his tone was a bit off, Lu Fangfang looked up at her husband.
Zhuang Mingcheng was very excited, but also a little embarrassed.
He leaned close to his wife's ear and whispered, "I'm taking some people to the provincial capital tomorrow, and I'll be bringing Little Yellow Dog with me. I'll leave Little Flower for you."
"This trip may take more than half a month. You will be alone at home, so please take good care of yourself. I will try my best to come back as soon as I finish my work."
Lu Fangfang frowned slightly. She's leaving so soon after returning?
"That spy exposed a big fish? A big fish in the provincial capital? Is it his superior? A foreign devil?"
"You'd better be careful, those foreign devils are no good, don't hold back."
Zhuang Mingcheng: "..."
My wife is too smart, it's really a headache.
He neither nodded nor shook his head, and dared not say another word.
Seeing his expression, Lu Fangfang understood; she had guessed correctly.
Since it's about catching a "big fish," she has to support it; it's a major achievement.
If her husband makes more contributions, he can be promoted to regimental commander sooner.
She let Zhuang Mingcheng carry the corn by himself while she went inside and got busy again.
My husband is leaving for the provincial capital tomorrow, so I have to treat him to something good tonight.
She had two dried rabbits at home, so she took one out and prepared to make spicy rabbit meat.
She also took out some argali meat, wanting to cook some more mutton to eat.
Soon, a rich aroma of meat, along with a spicy and numbing flavor, filled her home.
In the neighboring yard, Yang Yufeng was washing potatoes, preparing to cook dinner.
The aroma almost made her gasp for breath.
"Eating meat every day, every single day, how are we supposed to live?"
"Pah, can't you skip a day? I know you have four working-class people in your family, you think you're so capable, showing off... You don't know how to manage a household, you're such a spendthrift."
Afraid of being overheard by the neighbors, Yang Yufeng cursed in a very low voice.
After she finished cursing, she spat out another mouthful of blood.
She strode into the house and immediately shut all the doors and windows tightly.
The awful smell made her lose her appetite.
...
Lu Fangfang was busy in the yard and didn't hear Yang Yufeng's cursing, but even if she had, she wouldn't have cared.
Everything she eats and drinks is obtained honestly and fairly. Now, all four members of her family have made contributions, so she has nothing to fear from others' jealousy.
"Cough cough..."
She stir-fried the spicy rabbit meat for a bit, and when she felt it was almost done, she quickly scooped it into a small bowl.
Looking at the oil in the pot, she hesitated for a moment, but couldn't bear to wash the pot. So she simply put in the mutton, scooped up a ladle of water, and started stewing.
"It smells so good."
Zhuang Mingcheng sniffed it, unable to resist any longer.
He picked up a piece of rabbit meat, blew on it, and put it in his mouth.
Hmm...
He chewed it for a bit, then gave his wife a thumbs up. "This rabbit meat is numbing, spicy, and fragrant—it's really well-cooked!"
Seeing how much he was enjoying his food, Lu Fangfang also felt a pang of envy.
She picked up a piece, tasted it, and then nodded; the taste was indeed quite good.
