"Sister Shufen, these are some roasted sunflower seeds. Please try them."
Lu Fangfang grabbed a handful of melon seeds and stuffed them into Wang Shufen's hand.
She glanced into the incubation room and breathed a sigh of relief.
After more than a week of hard work, she, along with Sister Shufen and Sister-in-law Lanying, finally managed to hatch two thousand quail eggs, and they were almost exhausted.
Wang Shufen sat next to the girl, cracking sunflower seeds; she was also quite tired.
"Hey girl, do you still have any sunflower seeds left? I'll plant some next year too, they taste so good!"
"I saved a lot; I'll give them to you when I plant them next year."
Lu Fangfang ate a handful of sunflower seeds, then clapped her hands and stopped eating.
You shouldn't eat too many of these sunflower seeds, or they'll cause internal heat. A handful a day is just right.
"Sister Shufen, we still need to keep selecting the eggs. Once this batch hatches, we'll start hatching the next batch right away. In a few days, it will get even colder."
Lu Fangfang looked up and saw that it was only afternoon, but it was already a bit chilly sitting in the yard.
After a few more autumn rains, it will get even colder.
"Okay, I'll tell Lan Ying when she gets here."
Wang Shufen nodded while cracking sunflower seeds.
She was preparing to switch shifts with Zhao Lanying. It was almost September, and the rapeseed in the fields was ready to grow. She needed to free up her daytime hours to harvest the rapeseed.
"Bang, bang, bang."
The two were chatting in the yard when they heard the gate of the farm slam open.
Seeing that the girl was about to get up, Wang Shufen quickly waved her hand, got up, and walked over quickly.
Opening the gate of the farm, I saw Da Niu standing outside, carrying a patched bag.
"Hey girl, come in quickly! How many grass seeds did you pick today?"
More than yesterday.
A rare smile appeared on Da Niu's face.
Wang Shufen was quite surprised to see her smile.
This little girl always has a gloomy face, as if everyone owes her something, but when she suddenly smiles, she's actually quite pretty.
Shaking her head, Wang Shufen turned and went to the storeroom to get the scale.
"Hey girl, come here and let me take a look."
Lu Fangfang sat under the birch tree in the yard and waved to Da Niu.
I don't know if it's because of the pregnancy, but she's getting lazier and lazier and doesn't want to move at all.
Da Niu strode over, forcefully took the military bag off her shoulder, and placed it in front of her.
"You're so young, don't carry such heavy things, or you'll stunt your growth."
As she spoke, Lu Fangfang untied her handbag and reached in to grab a handful of things.
The grass seeds that Da Niu picked were mixed with some grass fluff, so they weren't very clean.
However, this was unavoidable. She noticed that the grass seeds were plump enough, and after drying them, they could be mixed with other feeds to feed the quails.
She put down the grass seeds and then took Da Niu's hand to look at it.
“Hey girl, put on some gloves. Look at the cuts on your hands. Making money is fine, but don’t get hurt.”
Touching her little hand, Lu Fangfang sighed helplessly again, realizing that she had just been talking nonsense.
It would be strange if Yang Yufeng and Wang Haibing could control their daughter.
She got up and went to the storeroom, where she took a pair of old cotton gloves and handed them to Da Niu when she returned.
"These are a bit big, you can wear them for now."
"I don't want to."
The girl shook her head and didn't take it.
"Take it, consider it a loan from the farm. You can return it after you've finished harvesting the grass seeds, otherwise your hands will give out after a few days."
Da Niu then silently accepted it.
Beside her, Wang Shufen held a steelyard balance and used it to weigh the cloth bag.
"Two pounds and six ounces, girl, you really ate quite a lot today."
One pound of grass seeds costs six cents, so two pounds and six ounces would cost one and a half cents and six li.
Wang Shufen took out 15 cents and then wrote it down in her notebook, "Big girl, remember this 6 cents first. The farm will pay you when we have enough for 1 cent."
"Thank you, Auntie."
Da Niu was very happy. After Wang Shufen poured out the grass seeds, she took the cloth bag and skipped away.
Lu Fangfang looked at it, smiled, and shook her head.
Earning 15 cents a day is a really happy thing for a child.
I got up and walked over to Sister Shufen, who helped me spread out the grass seeds.
Many people have come to deliver grass seeds these days, including children from the family compound and villagers from several nearby brigades.
The farm is now half full of spruce wood, and the grass seeds are almost impossible to dry.
If all else fails, you'll have to take them outside to dry, but someone has to watch over them.
"Sister Shufen, how many of those quail eggs have been picked out?"
"Nearly two thousand, all of them have had their hatching eggs selected."
"Okay, once we've collected two thousand, we'll send them to the regiment so we can ask the regiment leader for funding to continue collecting grass seeds."
"When we expand in the future, our farm will also need to become more standardized and we'll have to operate separately from the rest of the group."
Lu Fangfang explained her plans.
Once the two thousand quails in the incubator hatch, they will have more food to eat every day.
We need to keep collecting these cheap grass seeds; the more the better.
Grass seeds, bone meal, small fish meal, and corn flour are mixed together. Two and a half pounds of feed can produce about one pound of quail eggs.
Eggs sold in the county now cost seven or eight cents, and you need coupons for them. They're fed with grass seeds, which is a great deal.
After working for a while, she went to check on the incubation room.
The incubator is now filled with quail eggs covered with blankets, leaving barely any room for people to step.
She lifted the quilt to look at the thermometer, then reached out and touched it. The quail eggs were densely packed together and still warm. Satisfied, she withdrew her hand.
"Meow~"
"Awoo~"
The sounds of Little Flower and the little yellow dog barking came from outside.
