Chapter 37 Procurement

Lu Fangfang excitedly filled a sack with beef ribs, leaving Wang Shufen and Sun Manling dumbfounded.

There wasn't a single piece of meat on the bone, and neither of them understood why she had bought so much.

Even though beef bones are cheaper, only 12 cents a pound in the market, and there's no coupon, is it really necessary to buy so many?

"Girl, are you going to take this whole cow skeleton?"

"Yes, Fangfang, can you...can you eat all by yourself?"

Sun Manling looked on, her voice trembling slightly.

Looking at the sack she was carrying, filled with bones, Sun Manling suddenly thought of Battalion Commander Zhuang.

These two are really something else. One of them went to the city and came back with a whole military truckload of stuff.

One of them went to the county and bought a whole sack of beef bones. These two are definitely not from the same family.

Lu Fangfang waved her hand and gave a big smile, "It's okay, I'll treat my sisters-in-law to a meal together."

Sun Manling was taken aback for a moment, then laughed.

Ignoring Lu Fangfang's words, she said with a smile, "Then I must try your cooking, sister-in-law."

"Okay, sister-in-law, bring an enamel basin over tomorrow morning, and I'll treat you to beef bone soup."

While they were chatting and laughing, the butcher at the meat stall had already chopped off all the beef ribs, leaving only a long beef spine.

Seeing that the master was about to chop, Lu Fangfang quickly stopped him, "Comrade, leave the spine like this, there's no need to chop anymore, thank you for your trouble."

This cow skeleton is huge; the bones alone have filled almost a sack.

If they cut off her spine, she'll have nothing left to carry.

"Fangfang, come here."

Inside the meat stall, Zhang Meijiao waved to her.

As soon as Lu Fangfang walked over, Zhang Meijiao handed her something wrapped in a rag.

Lu Fangfang looked down and saw that it was beef liver.

She took it and touched it, then suddenly realized something was wrong. This wasn't a rag at all; it was clearly tripe.

"Sister-in-law Meijiao, this..."

"Take it. It's all offal, so it's included in the price you paid. You bought the beef skeleton, so your sister-in-law should thank you."

Zhang Meijiao waved her hand, not caring.

She was very professional, and no one could say she was wrong. Besides, the wastewater wasn't worth much anyway.

If she wanted to buy it, she could get an even better price if she went by the internal rate.

Well, since it's all about taking advantage of the public anyway, Lu Fangfang didn't say anything more after hearing what her sister-in-law Meijiao said.

She carried the beef liver back and put it into a burlap sack.

Seeing the crowd watching the excitement, Lu Fangfang blushed slightly. She found a piece of rope and tied the sack up.

It's funny to think about it now, but back then, sewage was cheap and didn't require tickets, making it a good treat for poor people.

Decades from now, some offal will be more expensive than meat.

Looking at the sack full of cow bones, Lu Fangfang started to worry again.

She tried to lift the sack to test it, but almost strained her back; the sack of cow bones was really heavy.

"Hey girl, let me do it."

Wang Shufen handed the beef in her hand to Lu Fangfang, then picked up the sack and put it on her shoulder.

Carrying a sack of cow bones, she turned and walked out.

"Sister-in-law Manling, Shufen and I are going back for a bit. You go ahead and buy your things."

"Sister Shufen, slow down."

Lu Fangfang was astonished. She quickly picked up the remaining cow spine and followed.

The remaining cow spine was thick and large, almost as tall as her, and it was quite difficult to carry.

When she returned, panting heavily, she startled the driver of the military vehicle.

The driver quickly climbed onto the military vehicle and helped carry the cow skull up there.

"Sister-in-law, are you just putting the cow's spine directly in the car?"

"Just put it down, thank you."

Lu Fangfang was also somewhat helpless. The military vehicle was not clean, but she had nothing to put in it. She could only wait until she got back to wash it properly.

After asking the driver to watch the market for a while, Lu Fangfang and Wang Shufen returned to the grocery market.

The two went directly to the place that sells eggs.

The sales clerk recognized Lu Fangfang and was a little surprised to see her. "Comrade, do you have tickets?"

Lu Fangfang nodded shyly, then pulled Wang Shufen to the egg stall.

"Sister Shufen, do you think these eggs are okay?"

In those days, there weren't many chicken farms, and the eggs sold in the market were all collected from the countryside.

There should be quite a few fertilized eggs among these eggs.

Wang Shufen was prepared. She took out a flashlight from her cloth bag and then used it to shine the light on the egg.

"Hmm."

It's too bright outside, and I can't see very well.

Wang Shufen simply unbuttoned her jacket, used it to block the light, and held the eggs in her bosom to reflect the light.

The saleswoman was dumbfounded. She quickly called out, "Hey? Hey? You're just buying eggs, what are you doing? This is a state-run market, all the eggs are good quality."

Lu Fangfang clasped her hands together and hurriedly said, "Comrade, we just want to select some hatching eggs. Thank you for your help."

"Eggs? Pshaw, I thought you were up to something. Pick any you like."

The salesperson was relieved.

In this day and age, no one wants a fertilized egg.

Some people who come to buy eggs will pick out hatching eggs, and it's a good thing that two people are willing to buy them.

Wang Shufen was picking out hatching eggs, and Lu Fangfang couldn't help much, so she simply asked the salesperson about quail eggs.

"Comrade, do you know where I can buy quail eggs? Quail eggs are fine too."

Quail eggs? You want to buy quail eggs?

The salesperson was taken aback, then said, "This is a rare find. I've been working here for years, selling chicken eggs, duck eggs, and goose eggs, but I've never sold quail eggs before. They've never been sold in the market in our county."

Lu Fangfang was somewhat disappointed; it seemed she could only visit the city when she had the chance.

While the two were talking, Wang Shufen had already picked out a small pile of eggs.

She used to hatch chicks every year in the countryside, so she knows eggs best and always chooses fresh hatching eggs.

"Comrade, weigh it for me, I only have two jin of egg coupons."

Wang Shufen looked around and, seeing no duck or goose eggs, sighed slightly. "Comrade, when do you sell duck and goose eggs at your market?"

While weighing the eggs, the salesperson shook his head and said, "It's hard to say, they might be available during holidays."

Wang Shufen calculated the days and had already given up hope of buying it.

After paying for the tickets, Wang Shufen and Lu Fangfang discussed their next destination.

Carrying the eggs was inconvenient, so the two went back and put them on the military vehicle.

When the two were putting the eggs away, they noticed that there were already many other things in the car, which must have been bought by other women.

There's a driver inside the vehicle, and since it's a military vehicle, there's no fear of it getting stolen.

Lu Fangfang glanced at the items and noticed that most of the things her sisters-in-law had bought were delicious.

The most outrageous thing about it was its long cow spine, which was really eye-catching.
