Chapter 42 Boiling Beef Bones, The Scary Child

Beef bones need to be cooked for a long time.

Looking at the firewood in the yard, Lu Fangfang was a little worried that there wouldn't be enough firewood.

She asked her sister-in-law Shufen to watch the fire, and then took the sickle and burlap sack she had just bought and went to the wasteland on the riverbank.

A small patch of land right next to the riverbank, sparsely covered with weeds.

Lu Fangfang looked around carefully and felt that it was about half an acre of land, which was the wasteland her sister-in-law had cleared before.

Unfortunately, it was abandoned again, and now if you want to plant anything, you have to dig it all up.

After watching for a while, she picked up a sickle and started cutting dry grass in the field.

The grassland has no shortage of grass, and in no time, Lu Fangfang filled a sack to the brim, which she carried back to the family compound.

In the courtyard, Wang Shufen was still tending the fire.

Almost half an hour had passed, and the water in the big pot still hadn't boiled. Lu Fangfang took out some freshly cut wild grass and stuffed it into the bottom of the pot.

Wild grass burns fiercely and quickly.

After a sack of straw was burned, the big black pot finally began to gurgle.

Lu Fangfang lifted the pot lid and saw blood foam on the water. She took a spoon and scooped it out.

"What a waste of things, what a waste of things."

Yang Yufeng held the child and stood aside, muttering to herself.

Seeing the oily water that Lu Fangfang had casually splashed on the ground, she felt a pang of heartache.

Lu Fangfang paused for a moment, holding the spoon, then said irritably, "Sister-in-law Yufeng, if you want it, go back and get something to put in it. Why are you so worried about wasting it? This is all blood foam."

"That blood foam is also cow blood, don't scoop it up yet, I'll go back and get an enamel basin."

Yang Yufeng, holding the child, hurriedly left again.

After a while, she came back with an enamel basin.

Seeing this, Lu Fangfang had no choice but to scoop the blood foam from the pot into her enamel basin.

"Look, this is covered in oil. It's such a waste to throw it away. It's perfect for stewing cabbage; you won't even need to add any oil."

"Each person in our group is rationed less than three ounces of oil per month, which is just over three pounds a year. If we don't use it sparingly, how can we have enough to eat?"

Lu Fangfang: "..."

She thought Yang Yufeng wanted to feed the chickens with the blood foam, but it turns out she was keeping it for herself.

My sister-in-law is right, we should be frugal, but this blood froth...

She just didn't understand. The political instructor was a battalion-level officer. Surely they wouldn't skimp on even this small thing?

Seeing Yang Yufeng leave with a basin of skimmed blood foam, Lu Fangfang could only admire her inwardly.

She asked Sister Shufen to continue burning the fire, and then she took a sickle and a sack and went to the riverbank again.

She went back and forth several times, and cut a large pile of hay.

Lu Fangfang also saw a piece of dead wood on the riverbank and dragged it back to the family compound as well.

It was getting dark, and Wang Shufen had already gone home. Lu Fangfang sat in front of the large black pot, continuing to cook.

She sniffed, the aroma from the pot making her incredibly hungry.

At this moment, everyone in the family compound was cooking, but none of the aromas could compare to the fragrance of hers.

It's no exaggeration to say that the aroma of her cooking bones wafted throughout most of the residential compound.

As Lu Fangfang continued to simmer the beef bones over a high flame, the family compound suddenly became lively.

Every little kid who smells meat will clamor for it.

Not to mention the little kids, even some adults who had just returned from the troupe were drooling with envy, which really put the wives in a difficult position.

My sister-in-law, who had gone to the county town to buy meat at noon, was fine; she took out the beef and started cooking right away.

Some women who hadn't bought meat could only coax their children to endure it for now.

But after a while, even the adults themselves could hardly contain themselves.

Previously, in the family compound, only Lu Fangfang's family cooked bones, and the meat flavor was a bit weak.

Now, whenever someone buys beef, the women in the family all start cooking their signature dishes.

There were stir-fried, deep-fried, and pan-fried dishes, plus Lu Fangfang's boiled one, and the aroma of meat filled the entire family compound.

This time, it wasn't just the children who were affected; even the adults were swallowing hard.

The little kid immediately started crying when he smelled the aroma of meat from other people's homes and looked at the boiled cabbage he was eating at home.

The adults were coaxing the child while secretly cursing him in their hearts.

They didn't get to enjoy their dinner in peace.

...

Lu Fangfang was unaware of this situation; she was still tending the fire.

After boiling for a while, she lifted the lid to check and saw that there wasn't much water left. She took a ladle and scooped the pot full of water again.

Next, we just need to continue cooking. The beef bones have only been simmering for three or four hours, so it's still a long way from being fully cooked.

"Fangfang, are the bones cooked yet?"

Yang Yufeng, holding the child, swallowed hard as she walked into the yard.

This time it wasn't just her and her daughter who came; Yang Yufeng was followed by a boy and a girl.

Upon seeing this situation, Lu Fangfang immediately understood.

Not wanting to say anything too harsh in front of the children, she could only reply irritably, "No, the bones won't be ready until tomorrow morning."

"Tomorrow morning?"

Yang Yufeng clearly didn't believe it.

She carried the child and walked directly to the large black pot, reaching out to pick up the lid.

The two children behind them followed suit and immediately ran over.

Upon seeing the large bones in the pot, the older little girl reached her hand directly into the pot.

"Oh my god!" Lu Fangfang was startled.

She grabbed the little girl's clothes from behind and pulled her back quickly.

The girl's hands had barely touched the water when Lu Fangfang pulled her behind her.

Luckily, she had just poured some cold water into the pot; otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

Lu Fangfang's heart was pounding, and a layer of cold sweat broke out on her forehead.

Holding the girl's hand tightly, she turned and glared angrily at Yang Yufeng, "Sister-in-law..."
