Qian Manman playfully stuck out her tongue and made a face at Li Xiuxiu, looking incredibly cute. She said to Li Xiuxiu:
“Xiuxiu, it’s one thing if my godparents criticize me, but you’re criticizing me too. Don’t you have any goals yourself? You’re a few months older than me.”
Seeing Qian Manman trying to argue and even steer the conversation back to herself, Li Xiuxiu gave Qian Manman an annoyed look.
Just as Li Xiuxiu was about to speak, Xiao Weimo, who was standing next to her, said to Qian Manman:
“Aunt Manman, my Aunt Xiuxiu has a boyfriend. When I grow up, I’m going to marry my Aunt Xiuxiu. It’s not like you.”
Qian Manman looked at Wei Mo's adorable expression as he spoke up for Li Xiuxiu, and she couldn't help but laugh out loud. Then she pulled Wei Mo to her side.
She pinched Wei Mo's little cheek and coaxed him, saying:
"Yes, yes, our little Wei Mo has grown up and is going to marry Aunt Xiu Xiu. He's already looking for a wife at such a young age. Look how promising our Wei Mo is!"
Qian Manman didn't take it seriously, but she had no idea that Wei Mo was telling the truth.
Li Xiuxiu remained silent. She had been a little worried, but she hadn't expected Qian Manman to be so easygoing and accept the situation so readily.
Although Li Xiuxiu knew that Qian Manman was joking, she still couldn't help feeling a little guilty.
Wei Mo, nestled in Qian Manman's arms, continued speaking to her:
“Aunt Manman, my Aunt Xiuxiu already has a boyfriend, but you don’t. Aren’t you worried? I’ll tell Grandma and Grandpa and have them set you up on blind dates. Let’s see if you still make fun of my future wife.”
After hearing Wei Mo's words, Qian's mother glared at him, pretending to be angry as she pushed him out of her arms, and then said to him:
"Then go find your wife. You dare to cause me trouble. I'll never cook anything delicious for you again."
While the three were joking around, time flew by, and the train conductor walked into the carriage and shouted:
"We'll be arriving at Longshi in 20 minutes. Passengers who wish to get off can line up at the door."
Upon hearing the train conductor's voice, Qian Manman and the other two stopped joking and stood up to put their luggage on the rack at their feet.
Their destination was Longshi, to Qian Manman's house. Zhou Fen, who was still having a heated conversation with Wang Changjun, felt somewhat helpless after hearing the broadcast.
Time flew by, and she and Wang Changjun got along very well, both harboring feelings for each other.
However, Zhou Fen hadn't forgotten her destination. Somewhat reluctantly, she stood up and said to Wang Changjun beside her:
"Comrade Wang Changjun, I'm almost at my destination. I had a very pleasant chat with you. I'll write to you when you return from your military service..."
Zhou Fen's meaning was quite clear. Upon hearing this, Wang Changjun immediately stood up and said to Zhou Fen with a delighted expression:
"Don't worry, I'll write to you as soon as I get off the train."
Communication was very underdeveloped in that era; there were only a few telephones in the county town, let alone in the villages.
The military does have telephones, but they're not something a lowly soldier like Wang Changjun could access.
While chatting with Zhou Fen, Wang Changjun became increasingly satisfied with her. He tentatively reached out, wanting to take her hand in his.
He moved very slowly. Zhou Fen had already moved her hand elsewhere, but when she saw this, she slowly extended her hand forward again.
And so, Wang Changjun took Zhou Fen's hand, grinned foolishly at her, and scratched his head with his other hand.
Zhou Fen lowered her head shyly, and thinking that there were still more than ten minutes left, she sat down again.
Wang Changjun, who was standing to the side, was very excited. He sat down close to Zhou Fen and then said gently:
"Comrade Zhou Fen, if you don't mind my situation, I will propose to your family as soon as I am discharged from the army. I hope you can wait for me."
Zhou Fen nodded shyly. She was very satisfied with Wang Changjun, who met all her fantasies about her other half. Otherwise, she wouldn't have reached out her hand.
Feeling the warmth emanating from her hands, she said to Wang Changjun:
"Comrade Wang Changjun, don't worry, I will wait for your return. But you must write to me often. Time is too short, I will get off the train soon. I look forward to your letters."
After Zhou Fen finished speaking, she pulled her hand out of Wang Changjun's hand. Her beautiful eyes flickered slightly as she tried to memorize Wang Changjun's appearance.
Then, somewhat shyly, she stood up and said to Wang Changjun:
"Comrade Wang Changjun, I'll go back to my seat now. My family is still waiting for me over there."
Wang Changjun quickly got up to see her off. He saw Zhou Fen staring intently at him and became even more smitten.
Wang Changjun escorted Zhou Fen back to her original seat. Looking at Qian Manman, Li Xiuxiu, and Wei Mo, who were staring at him and Zhou Fen, he awkwardly scratched his head.
Then he addressed the three of them and said:
"Ladies and children, please take good care of Comrade Zhou Fen for me. I will propose marriage to her as soon as I am discharged from the army."
Qian Manman and Li Xiuxiu stared in surprise, their eyes wide with astonishment. They hadn't expected their relationship to progress so quickly; it was beyond their wildest imaginations.
They've actually reached the stage of discussing marriage. Li Xiuxiu nodded and smiled at Wang Changjun, saying:
"Comrade Wang, don't worry, we will definitely take good care of Zhou Fen. We'll wait for your wedding and then we'll eat your wedding candy."
Zhou Fen became shy after Li Xiuxiu's words, and she sat to the side, not daring to make a sound.
Wang Changjun scratched his head awkwardly, looking at the things Qian Manman and the others had brought, and immediately said:
"You're almost at your stop, right? Let me help you take your things to the exit."
Li Xiuxiu, who was about to refuse, hadn't even opened her mouth when she heard Xiao Weimo beside her say:
"Thank you so much, Uncle Wang. Maybe I'll have to call you Uncle Wang from now on. Who knows, we might even become family. I'll have to trouble you then."
After hearing Wei Mo's teasing, Wang Changjun stood aside and chuckled foolishly. Then he picked up the package on the ground and walked towards the carriage door.
Zhou Fen, who was originally shy, quickly stood up and stood behind Wang Changjun. She thought she could spend as much time with him as possible, and Wang Changjun thought the same way.
The three bystanders watched the two leave, then quickly tidied themselves up and followed behind them at the door.
Li Xiuxiu thought for a moment. There were many people on the train and at the train station, and she was afraid that she would get lost from Wei Mo, so she squatted down and picked Wei Mo up.
Wei Mo reluctantly whispered in Li Xiuxiu's ear:
"Xiuxiu, my dear wife, put me down now. Don't worry, I won't wander off."
Wei Mo knew that Li Xiuxiu was concerned about him, so he spoke very gently, but Li Xiuxiu shook her head and hugged Wei Mo tightly.
