More than half an hour later, the jeep finally arrived at the county hospital. Shen Tingzhou carried Grandma Shen and rushed into the emergency room. The on-duty doctor immediately came forward to examine her. After a preliminary examination, she was diagnosed with an acute myocardial infarction. Her condition was very critical and surgery was necessary immediately.
"Doctor, please, you must save my mother!" Shen Tingzhou gripped the doctor's hand tightly, his eyes filled with pleading, his voice trembling slightly. Over the years, he had faked his death for a mission and hadn't been able to be by his mother's side to fulfill his filial duties, which already filled him with guilt. Now that his mother was seriously ill, he was determined to save her life no matter what.
"Don't worry, family members, we will do our best," the doctor said solemnly. "We need to perform surgery immediately, but the surgery is very risky. You need to be mentally prepared. Also, the family members need to sign the surgical consent form."
Without the slightest hesitation, Lin Wanqiu picked up the pen and signed her name on the surgical consent form. The pen tip glided across the paper, leaving clear handwriting. At that moment, she had only one thought in her mind: she must ensure that Old Lady Shen could get through this difficult time safely.
After Grandma Shen was wheeled into the operating room, the red light came on, making Shen Tingzhou and Lin Wanqiu's faces appear even more somber. They sat on a bench outside the operating room, silent, the air thick with anxiety and unease. The corridor was quiet, save for the hurried footsteps of nurses and the ticking of medical equipment; every second felt exceptionally long.
Shen Tingzhou leaned against the wall and closed his eyes wearily. These days, he had to deal with the unfinished business of the army, worry about the food factory, and prepare for Nianxi's victory celebration banquet. He was already exhausted, both physically and mentally. Now, his mother's sudden serious illness made him feel unprecedented pressure.
Lin Wanqiu felt a pang of heartache seeing his haggard appearance. She gently held Shen Tingzhou's hand; his palm was cold and covered in a thin layer of sweat. "Old Shen, don't worry too much, Mother will be alright," she whispered, her voice gentle yet firm. "The doctor said they will do their best; we must trust them."
Shen Tingzhou opened his eyes and, seeing the determination and encouragement in Lin Wanqiu's eyes, felt his anxiety ease slightly. He grasped Lin Wanqiu's hand tightly, as if holding a lifeline, "Wanqiu, thank you. If it weren't for you, Mother might have..."
"Stop talking, we're family." Lin Wanqiu interrupted him, a hint of warmth flashing in her eyes. "Mother is your mother, and also my mother-in-law. It's only right that I take care of her."
Just then, Lin Wanqiu's pocket vibrated; it was a call from Shen Nian'an. She quickly answered, and Shen Nian'an's steady voice came from the other end: "Mother, how is Grandma? Has the surgery started?"
"It's already started, Nian'an." Lin Wanqiu tried to keep her voice calm. "Don't worry, the doctors will do their best. How are things at home? Have all the guests been seen off?"
“They’ve all been sent away, Mother, don’t worry,” Shen Nian’an said. “I’ve already sent Wanqing back to rest. I’m staying home with Nianxi, and things at the food factory are all arranged. Mother, please take good care of Grandma at the hospital, and also take good care of yourselves. Call me anytime if anything happens.”
"Okay, I understand." Lin Wanqiu hung up the phone, a warm feeling welling up in her heart. Nian'an, this child, has been sensible and considerate since she was little. Now that she's grown up, she's become a capable assistant to her and Shen Tingzhou, making her life much easier.
The clock outside the operating room ticked away, time slowly slipping away in anxious waiting. The sky outside gradually darkened, the last rays of the setting sun streaming through the window into the corridor, casting long, long shadows of the two figures. Lin Wanqiu stood up, walked to the window, and gazed at the streetlights gradually coming on outside, her mind filled with a myriad of thoughts.
She recalled the beginning of her rebirth, when she and the frail Nian'an suffered endless hardships in the Shen family. It was the space that gave her hope, and it was her own efforts that allowed her and her child to live a better life. She remembered Shen Tingzhou's "resurrection," how the two went from initial misunderstandings to joining hands, fighting villains together, starting a business together to become wealthy, and protecting their family together. She remembered Nianxi growing from a naive little girl into a gold medalist in the National Children's Dance Competition, remembered Nian'an's mathematical talent, and remembered how her family gradually moved towards happiness and fulfillment…
Now that Old Mrs. Shen has suddenly fallen seriously ill, despite past grievances, she sincerely hopes that Old Mrs. Shen will be safe and sound. She knows that Shen Tingzhou has always felt guilty towards his mother, and she also hopes that this family can truly become harmonious, without suspicion or estrangement, only with mutual love and protection.
After what seemed like an eternity, the red light in the operating room finally went out. The doctor emerged, removed his mask, and although his face showed signs of fatigue, his eyes shone with relief. "Doctor, how is he?" Shen Tingzhou and Lin Wanqiu immediately rushed forward, their eyes filled with anticipation.
"The surgery was a success!" the doctor said. "The patient is out of danger, but because the condition was quite serious, he will need to be observed in the intensive care unit for a few more days to see how he recovers."
Upon hearing the words "surgery successful," Shen Tingzhou and Lin Wanqiu finally breathed a sigh of relief. They exchanged a glance, both seeing relief and joy in each other's eyes. "Thank you, doctor! Thank you so much!" Shen Tingzhou said excitedly, gripping the doctor's hand tightly for a long time.
"You're welcome, it's what we should do." The doctor smiled. "The patient is still very weak. You can go in and see her, but don't stay too long. Let her rest well."
Shen Tingzhou and Lin Wanqiu entered the intensive care unit. Old Mrs. Shen lay on the bed, with various tubes inserted into her body and connected to equipment such as an electrocardiogram monitor. Her face was still pale, but her breathing had become much more stable. She slowly opened her eyes, saw Shen Tingzhou and Lin Wanqiu, a glint of light flashed in her eyes, and her lips moved as if she wanted to say something.
