Chapter 11: Generosity

Xia Lei was furious and roared at Jiang Ci, "Jiang Ci! Is this how you raise your children?! Letting those two gang up on my son! Don't you have any shame?!"

Hearing this, Jiang Ci's temper flared up, and she looked coldly at the family of three, "Your son said my daughter stole his candy, so she stole his candy?"

Xia Xi said clearly, "She took my candy. I secretly brought two candies from home. We were playing together, and Zhou Miao took them when I wasn't looking!"

Those who were watching the commotion from the sidelines changed their gaze towards Jiang Ci and her two children after hearing Xia Xi's words.

"They've already learned to steal at such a young age, what will they be like in the future?"

"That's right! Look how poor Zhou Lao Er's family is. The two kids must be craving the candy from Xia Zhiqing's children, so they tried to steal it to eat."

Jiang Ci wouldn't spend money to buy candy for her two children.

This was a very firm belief in everyone present. After all, Jiang Ci herself had been beaten so badly by Zhou Lao Er that she had no money on her, so how could she possibly buy candy for the child?

This candy must have been stolen by Zhou Miao from Xia Xi.

Zhou Miao's sobs subsided, and standing beside Jiang Ci, she retorted in a low voice, "This is candy that Mom gave me; it's my reward for overcoming my fever."

“My mother said she would give it to me, but I won’t give it to anyone else.”

She was saying all of Jiang Ci's words to her.

Zhou Miao's body had not fully recovered, and now she was frightened again. She had been pushed down several times by Xia Xi, and her face was flushed. She didn't look well.

Jiang Ci picked up Zhou Miao, grabbed Zhou Yang with one hand, and looked coldly at the child in Xia Lei's arms, "Say it again, did you take the candy in my child's hand from home?"

Xia Xi was frightened by Jiang Ci's cold gaze. Feeling guilty but not daring to speak, she pouted and started to cry.

Standing next to Xia Lei, Liu Yinyin also seemed angry. "Jiang Ci! Stop scaring the child. Let me tell you, I can forgive you for stealing my letter of introduction, but I won't let bygones be bygones about your two children hitting my child!"

She also believed that Jiang Ci would not buy candy for her two children.

Xixi was smart from a young age and knew where the candy was kept at home. Sometimes she would secretly take two pieces, but she would be caught and scolded as soon as she ate them. Xixi was cute, and neither she nor Xia Lei could bear to discipline her severely.

Xixi may have taken two candies to eat when she came out today.

Thinking of this, and looking at her son's injuries, Liu Yinyin's gaze towards Jiang Ci became even more furious.

The captain frowned. "Jiang Ci, this isn't how you teach children. If your child does something wrong, you should apologize. But your two children are bullying one, and you're even teaching her to lie. Aren't you just destroying the future of our nation?"

Upon hearing this, Jiang Ci looked at the captain and said calmly, "If my child had done something wrong, I would naturally make them apologize to Xia Xi. But my child did nothing wrong in this matter. On the contrary, what was Xia Lei doing just now? The two children were fighting, and he, an adult, intervened and almost threw Yangyang away. How big is Xia Lei? How big is my son? If he threw the child away and I hadn't caught Zhou Yang, and he had hit his head on the ground, whose responsibility would it be if the child was injured?"

Xia Lei shouted angrily, "Jiang Ci, it was your two children who hit my son! What nonsense are you spouting?!"

Jiang Ci glanced at him coldly and continued to speak to the captain, "Let's put aside the matter of him dumping my Yangyang for now and talk about the candy in Miaomiao's hand."

“Last night, Miaomiao had a high fever, so I took her to the clinic for an injection. This morning, before I went to work, I went to the clinic to have the doctor take Miaomiao’s temperature. The doctor saw that Miaomiao didn’t cry when she got the injection or when she took the medicine, and praised her for being a good child. He gave my Miaomiao two candies. I thought I couldn’t let the doctor give her something for nothing, so I took 50 cents and bought Miaomiao seven candies.”

Jiang Ci reached into her pocket and took out the remaining five candies. Amidst the silence, she suppressed her anger and said, "These are candies that Miao Miao bought from the doctor because she was sick. Miao Miao has never eaten candy before and cherishes them very much. She didn't even give them to her brother when he asked for them and kept them to herself. Xia Xi claims they are his, then he should produce the proof!"

"If you don't believe me, you can come with me to the clinic and ask the doctor whether I bought these seven candies or whether my daughter stole them from Xia Xi!"

Jiang Ci's words were reasonable and well-founded, and she explained the whole story clearly. The people present looked at the five candies in Jiang Ci's hand, and then at the wailing Xia Xi, and for a moment they didn't know what to say.

Some people, not wanting to miss out on the excitement, rushed off to fetch the doctor.

Seeing the crowd of people, the doctor chuckled, "Who has heatstroke? Or is someone sick? Do you want me to come over?"

During the sweltering summer wheat harvest, doctors are not idle; they have to patrol the fields to check on anyone suffering from heatstroke so they can provide emergency care.

Someone quickly asked, "Doctor, Jiang Ci said she bought seven candies from you for her child, is that true?"

The doctor looked at the man in surprise. "How did you know?"

Is this really true?

Xia Lei and Liu Yinyin didn't look too good. Xia Lei, who was always upright, didn't believe that his son would snatch candy from others. He stared intently at the doctor and asked, "Jiang Ci really bought your candy? Doctor, could it be that you and Jiang Ci have something going on, so you're deliberately siding with her?"

The doctor's face immediately darkened. "What nonsense are you spouting! What have I ever had with her! Jiang Ci brought her child to the clinic this morning to have the child's temperature taken. The child had a fever last night, and Jiang Ci brought the child to the clinic last night, where she also ran into Zhou Lao Er, who was covered in injuries! When Jiang Ci asked me to buy candy for the child today, all the educated youth at the clinic saw it. If you don't believe me, ask them! Jiang Ci gave me fifty cents, and I gave her seven pieces of candy. All the educated youth at the clinic know that!"

The doctor also had a fiery temper. He glared at Xia Lei and said, "Xia Lei, let me tell you, you dare to slander my innocence with a female colleague? I'm not finished with you!"

Xia Lei's expression became even uglier.

Liu Yinyin burst into tears and patted Xia Xi, "Tell me! Did you take her candy?! Tell me!"

Xia Xi cried her heart out.

Jiang Ci smiled, "Since your son said he took the candy from home, I suppose you don't have so much candy that you can't count it all. Why don't you let the kid eat as much as he wants? You can count how much candy you have when you get home and find out."

Sugar was a precious commodity at this time, especially when it was individually packaged. It was a rare item that even money couldn't buy at the supply and marketing cooperative.

Only doctors, through family connections, can buy a pound or two. In this production team, without connections, it's impossible to get any.

Even for Xia Lei and Liu Yinyin, getting malted milk powder and packaged fruit candies would be very difficult.

Xia Lei's face darkened, and he slapped Xia Xi hard on the back. "Tell me! Did you try to steal Zhou Miao's candy?"

Xia Xi was swaying as Xia Lei hit her. Seeing that Xia Lei was hitting her so hard, Liu Yinyin objected and grabbed Xia Lei's hand, saying, "Why are you hitting the child? He's so young, how can he control what he eats?"

Seeing this, onlookers also advised, "Yes, yes, the child is so young. Just say it and let it go. Don't hurt him."

"Jiang Ci, you're a magnanimous person. Don't hold a grudge against a child. Let's just let this go."
