Chapter 123 No Meat, Only Vegetables

When Jiang Ci returned home, she found the stove and pots cold.

Previously, Zhou Mingli was the one who cooked, and Jiang Ci would only cook if he had something really important to do.

It wasn't because Zhou Mingli was reluctant to let her cook, but because Jiang Ci's cooking skills were limited. Compared to Zhou Mingli's skills, her cooking was indeed not very good.

Jiang Ci glanced at the clothes hanging on the rope and knew that Zhou Mingli had returned.

Jiang Ci went into the room and saw Zhou Mingli lying on the bed, seemingly resting. She didn't go in to disturb him and went to the kitchen to cook.

Jiang Ci wasn't very good at cooking, so she didn't bother with the rabbits or chickens. She just boiled the wild eggs she was given, hurriedly stir-fried a dish, and heated up some cornbread.

Jiang Ci called out, "Yangyang, Miaomiao."

The two children immediately ran into the kitchen.

"Mom! Is dinner ready?"

Jiang Ci nodded. "Go and wake your dad up for dinner."

"Oh—Mom, is there meat for us today?"

Jiangci, "No meat, only vegetables."

Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao were looking forward to having some delicious meat for lunch today, but all they got was vegetables.

The two children were a little disappointed.

Zhou Mingli came out, and his expression wasn't good.

Jiang Ci set out the food and said during the meal, "Today we caught some pheasants and rabbits on the mountain. Dazhu and Erzhu also want to eat chicken. Why don't you cook the chicken tonight and send some to Brother Yu's house?"

Zhou Mingli's expression darkened further. He closed his eyes, quickly finished his meal, and said, "I understand."

After saying that, he gathered up his own dishes and took the pots and pans out to wash them.

Jiang Ci glanced at Zhou Mingli, puzzled, wondering what was wrong with him.

In the afternoon, Jiang Ci and Sister-in-law Yu also went to the fishpond to help clean the lotus roots.

The lotus roots don't need to be handed over; they're distributed to the people in the production team. They just need to dig up all the lotus roots from the fishponds, clean them, and then distribute them.

Besides selling the fish to the supply and marketing cooperative, each household would also receive half a fish.

While cleaning the mud off the lotus roots, Sister-in-law Yu glanced at Zhou Mingli who was working and said to Jiang Ci beside her, "Putting everything else aside, the second son is quite strong. Look how strong he is when he works."

Jiang Ci's lips twitched. "Don't praise someone for being good at work. The last person who was good at work has already been arrested."

Sister-in-law Yu and the people around her immediately understood who Jiang Ci was referring to.

Xia Lei!

He's a strong man who can work ten work points a day!

"Ahem." Someone coughed loudly, signaling Jiang Ci to say less.

Jiang Ci turned her head and saw Liu Yinyin pushing her bicycle with her son Xia Xi on the back seat as they passed by not far away.

She must have heard what Jiang Ci said.

Liu Yinyin's gaze towards Jiang Ci was filled with dark hatred.

Jiang Ci wasn't afraid of Liu Yinyin at all. She glanced at her indifferently, then calmly and naturally looked away, completely open and honest.

Liu Yinyin's teeth were almost ground to powder.

Jiangci!

Once she rescues Brother Lei from inside, she'll be the first person he won't let go!

She rode her bicycle all the way to town.

There was another person in the town, Zhou Gou.

He brought his daughter with him. Wang Zhaodi originally wanted to come along too, but Zhou Gou didn't agree, saying there wasn't enough room.

Wang Zhaodi's face immediately turned ugly.

What do you mean there's no room? With the Forever 28-inch bicycle, let Zhou Huai sit in front and she sit in the back, there'll definitely be room!

To put it bluntly, Zhou Gou simply didn't want to take her to town!

Even if Wang Zhaodi was unwilling, she didn't dare to say anything and could only watch helplessly as Zhou Gou left with Zhou Huai.

Zhou Gou took Zhou Huai to a state-run restaurant for a meal before going to take care of business.

He took the child to the military base in town to return the car and even borrowed their phone.

Zhou Gou is now a battalion commander, so it's perfectly fine for a battalion commander to borrow a phone.

Zhou Gou told Zhou Huai to wait outside while he went inside to make a phone call.

After a few busy beeps, the call was answered shortly afterward.

"Hello?" a man's voice rang out.

Zhou Gou straightened his back. "Mr. Cheng, it's me, it's Zhou Gou!"

Cheng Huasheng, who had moved out of the shared courtyard house and into a separate courtyard house with his wife and daughter, stood in the main room, wearing a neat white shirt, looking upright and handsome.

When he heard Zhou Gou's voice, his whole body tensed up.

Cheng Huasheng's wife, Li Ailian, sensed something was wrong. She slowly walked over and asked in a low voice, "What's wrong?"

Cheng Huasheng raised his hand to interrupt Li Ailian's question, "Battalion Commander Zhou, do you... do you have any news about my father?"

Zhou Gou's voice came through, "Mr. Cheng, I called today to report this matter to you!"

"Old Mr. Cheng is in the cowshed near our Shanding Brigade! My younger brother's wife is in charge of delivering meals to Old Mr. Cheng, and she told me that Old Mr. Cheng is doing very well!"

Cheng Huasheng's face lit up with joy, "Really? Have you seen it yourself?!"

Zhou Gou scratched his head. "Not yet. I only heard the news from my sister-in-law a few days ago. There are still people with red armbands watching over the cowshed. I couldn't get close."

Cheng Huasheng took a deep breath to suppress his joy and said, "Then could you please ask your sister-in-law if he is alright?"

Cheng Huasheng's eyes were moist. "Tell your sister-in-law that his son has not let him down, and that we will be reunited in the near future."

Zhou Gou replied, "Okay, I'll talk to my sister-in-law when I get back."

“By the way, Mr. Cheng, I learned something before.” Zhou Gou lowered his voice, “Before my sister-in-law took this job, apart from the deceased old widower, many of the people who delivered meals to the old man were found to have bad class backgrounds. Some were sent to the Northwest, and quite a few were sent for reform.”

"If we let my sister-in-law communicate with the old man now... wouldn't that get her into trouble?"

Zhou Gou actually wanted to wait until everything was over before contacting Cheng Yehan. Jiang Ci had already overstepped her bounds by telling him that Cheng Yehan was the one living in the cowshed.

If we send Jiang Ci to risk her life to convey Mr. Cheng's message to Cheng Yehan, wouldn't that be pushing Jiang Ci into a fire pit?

Jiang Ci was kind to his daughter and told him such big news. Zhou Gou was very grateful to Jiang Ci and would never betray her.

Cheng Huasheng paused for a moment upon hearing this, then realized something, "Yes... I was too hasty."

Zhou Gou smiled and said, "You and the old gentleman haven't seen each other for so many years, so of course you're eager to see your relatives."

Zhou Gou thought for a moment and said, "How about this, I'll find a way to let my sister-in-law tell the old man that you've returned. That way, the old man can be at ease and know that he can go out, which will give him some comfort."

Cheng Huasheng thought Zhou Gou's idea was good and nodded in agreement.

"By the way, Battalion Commander Zhou, what's your sister-in-law's name?"

Zhou Gou said, "It's called Jiangci, Jiang as in great rivers and porcelain."

Cheng Huasheng smiled and said, "A good name."
