Chapter 14 Heartache

Liu Yinyin wiped away her tears, her voice filled with sorrow, "It was indeed my family's fault, Captain, what do you suggest we do?"

Her tearful appearance would soften anyone's heart.

The captain sighed. "Xia Lei, give Jiang Ci twenty yuan and apologize to her family. This was indeed your fault. No matter how much you have a conflict, you can't just abandon your child."

Everyone nodded in agreement. That's right, how could you do this to a child?

"Jiang Ci, what do you think of doing this?"

Jiang Ci glanced at Xia Lei, whose face was grim. "I know the captain is fair, and what you said makes sense to us, but I still want to tell Xia Lei this seriously."

Jiang Ci smiled enigmatically, “Keep an eye on your child. He’s so young and already knows how to label people. If you don’t educate him, someone else will do it for you.”

Liu Yinyin was furious and was about to retort when Xia Lei grabbed her arm.

Xia Lei said coldly, "I'll say the same to you."

Xia Lei immediately apologized coldly. After everyone had finished watching the spectacle, they slowly dispersed.

Xia Lei's gaze swept over Zhou Mingli's family with moments of gloom and moments of coldness.

Zhou Mingli asked Jiang Ci, "How are you? Were you bullied?"

Jiang Ci said no, "With so many people watching, how could that couple possibly hit me?"

Xia Lei and Liu Yinyin both looked terrible, but then Jiang Ci said, "It's not our family that did anything wrong. If he dares to hit me, I'll stay at his house for three months. I won't go back until I'm fully recovered."

Xia Lei: "..."

Liu Yinyin: "..."

That damned Jiang Ci! He's wicked and vicious!

Zhou Mingli laughed, "Even if he really hits you, I won't let his family get away with it."

"Xia Lei, I brought the mung bean soup you made this morning. Drink it first before you go to work. I'll go back and get the money."

Liu Yinyin had lost face today and couldn't stay any longer, so she made an excuse and hurriedly left with her son.

Xia Lei wasn't there either; he coldly walked away, carrying the mung bean soup.

Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli exchanged a glance, and Jiang Ci gave a cool smile, "Is it fun to watch me make a fool of myself?"

Zhou Mingli smiled and said, "If I speak up, wouldn't I be ruining your plans?"

Jiang Ci: "Then why did you step forward?"

Zhou Mingli: "Boss Zhou is after me. I caused this trouble, so I can't just sit idly by."

Jiang Ci glanced at Zhou Mingli with surprise.

Jiang Ci didn't know that Zhou Mingli got the 150 yuan by reasoning with Boss Zhou. She didn't know what methods he used, and Zhou Mingli wouldn't tell her either.

However, hearing an explanation from him shows that Zhou Mingli has truly made progress.

"Okay, I'll keep an eye on Boss Zhou."

As she spoke, Jiang Ci repeated to Zhou Mingli what she and the other women had been rambling on about, “This is an excuse I made for you. Remember it well. If anyone asks you why you changed it, just say this. Let’s make sure neither of us gives the right explanation.”

Zhou Mingli nodded. "I've remembered everything."

When Liu Yinyin brought the money over, Jiang Ci took out the meat coupons and the money she had earned that day from her pocket and handed them to Zhou Mingli. "You don't look seriously injured. I have to keep working. Go get some meat, we'll have it for lunch."

Zhou Mingli caught the ticket, glanced at it, paused, and then suddenly laughed, "If I get meat, do you know how to cook it?"

Jiang Ci looked at him coolly, "If you're not afraid of death, of course I can do it."

Zhou Mingli: “…”

Then forget it.

"I will, I'll go back and do it."

Zhou Mingli: "Would you like some flatbread?"

"want."

“Okay.” Zhou Mingli nodded, looked down at the two children, and said, “I’ll take them with me.”

Jiang Ci: "Okay, if they stay here, I'll have to keep an eye on them, which is a bit of a hassle."

Zhou Miao and Zhou Yang were clearly still a little afraid of their father, clinging to Jiang Ci's legs and unwilling to leave her.

Jiang Ci had to comfort them for a while before she could calm them down and let them leave with Zhou Mingli.

After they finished talking, Jiang Ci walked back into the sunlight.

Zhou Mingli watched Jiang Ci's back as she bent down to pick up the fallen ears of wheat.

Zhou Mingli clenched his fists tightly, closed his eyes, and felt an indescribable tightness in his chest.
