Chapter 22 The Sun Rises from the West

Sister-in-law Yu stared at it in astonishment for a long time, feeling both incredulous and somewhat skeptical of Jiang Ci's explanation.

Could it be that Zhou Lao Er has really changed?

She doesn't know.

But since Zhou Lao Er was willing to wash Jiang Ci's hair himself, and Jiang Ci even allowed him to help, it was clear that the couple had already been persuaded.

They should be ready to live a good life.

Sister-in-law Yu returned home with a thoughtful expression.

Seeing this, Brother Yu patted his wife on the shoulder and said, "What are you thinking about? You're so engrossed."

With an expression that said, "I've seen something amazing," Sister-in-law Yu said to her brother in a deep voice, "Guess what I just did?"

Brother Yu: "Didn't you say that Zhou Lao Er asked to borrow scissors from you, and you were afraid he would hurt someone with them, so you went there in person? These scissors were borrowed by Jiang Ci, right? She needs to cut clothes?"

"No way!" Sister-in-law Yu exclaimed. "Jiang Ci wanted to cut her hair short, so I went over to help her."

After explaining, Sister-in-law Yu lowered her voice and said mysteriously, "When I came back, I saw Zhou Lao Er actually washing Jiang Ci's hair!"

Brother Yu said firmly, "Impossible!"

He said with a sneer and a hint of disdain, "Given Zhou Lao Er's temperament, it's already merciful of him not to beat Jiang Ci to death. He would wash his wife's hair? I don't believe it!"

If it were half an hour ago, Sister-in-law Yu wouldn't have believed it either. She clicked her tongue, grabbed her husband, and strode out.

Brother Yu's house and the Zhou's house are right next to each other, only about 30 to 50 meters apart, but it's a bit dark now, so it's not very clear.

But you could still vaguely see two figures at the door.

The two of them moved a small stool and sat together, talking about something.

Sister-in-law Yu proved her point, nudging her husband with a smug look on her face. "See? See? Jiang Ci and Zhou Lao Er are talking amicably right now. Would I lie to you about something like this?"

Brother Yu muttered, "The sun must have risen in the west. Zhou Lao Er has finally learned to speak calmly with his wife?"

Sister-in-law Yu snorted and relayed Jiang Ci's story about Zhou Mingli being taught a lesson. After listening, Brother Yu exclaimed, "No wonder Zhou Lao Er came back that day covered in injuries and walking obediently beside Jiang Ci! It turns out he had already been taught a lesson back then!"

Sister-in-law Yu had also heard her husband mention that he had helped Jiang Ci keep an eye on Zhou Yang. "I guess it's because of this."

As the two walked back, Sister-in-law Yu sighed, "If Zhou Lao Er could change his ways, Jiang Ci wouldn't have bothered Xia Lei so much. Why did she have to act so recklessly again?"

Brother Yu nodded, "If you can live a good life, you'll naturally want to make your life prosperous."

The couple lay in bed preparing to sleep. Brother Yu was almost asleep when Sister-in-law Yu suddenly remembered what Zhou Mingli had said. She sat up abruptly in bed. "Oh, I almost forgot! Second Brother Zhou said he wanted to build a yard for his family and enclose the house. He asked me if you were free to help out."

"Judging from Jiang Ci's tone, Zhou Lao Er is planning to take the money. Why don't you go?"

Brother Yu rolled over with his eyes closed. "I'm busy harvesting wheat. I don't have time to build a yard for his family."

"People say after the wheat harvest!"

"...Tomorrow I'll go talk to Zhou Lao Er and see how he plans to build his courtyard."

The next morning, after having breakfast, Brother Yu went to the Zhou family's house first.

Zhou Mingli and Jiang Ci had already eaten. There wasn't much entertainment these days. Jiang Ci went back to sleep after her hair dried last night, so she woke up exceptionally early.

Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli weren't planning to bring their two children to the supply and marketing cooperative, but they were thinking of going to the Yu family's house and asking Sister-in-law Yu to look after the children for a day.

When Brother Yu and Zhou Mingli met, they knew that his wife hadn't been exaggerating last night; Zhou Lao Er had indeed changed.

"Brother Yu, we were just about to go to your house," Jiang Ci said with a smile.

Zhou Mingli also greeted Jiang Ci, "Good morning, Brother Yu."

Good morning, Brother Yu.

Listen to this, when did Zhou Lao Er start calling him Brother Yu?

This guy usually berates him when he sees him, calling him a coward and afraid of his wife. It's already considered friendly if the two of them don't fight. When has Zhou Lao Er ever been so polite to him!

Brother Yu was almost fooled by him, and it took him a long time to straighten his face and ask, "Guihua said yesterday that you're going to build a courtyard?"

Sister-in-law Yu's surname is Huang, and her given name is Guihua.

Zhou Mingli nodded, "Yes, we were also planning to go to the supply and marketing cooperative today. Could you tell us what materials we need to buy that are economical for building a yard?"

This means they are not planning to use bricks and will use other materials instead.

Brother Yu mentioned several materials, saying, "These can be exchanged at the brigade level, using work points. There's no need to go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy them, as they require ration coupons and money."

Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli exchanged a glance and felt that what Brother Yu said made sense.

They knew they couldn't stay in Shanding Brigade forever, so their common goal was to make the house clean, pleasing to the eye, and habitable. Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli had reached a consensus on this point.

Zhou Mingli and Jiang Ci nodded in unison, "Okay, after we finish harvesting the spring wheat and plant the seeds for the next season, I'll ask you to come and lend a hand."

Brother Yu nodded again with a serious face, "I'm going to work."

After saying that, Brother Yu turned around and went to the wheat field that the production team had assigned to him to harvest wheat.

Jiang Ci brought Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao, the two children, to the Yu family's house.

Brother Yu and Sister-in-law Yu have two sons, Dazhu and Erzhu, both of whom are mischievous. Sister-in-law Yu stays at home to look after the two children and do housework, so she doesn't go to work.

When Jiang Ci arrived with her children, Da Zhu and Er Zhu had just gotten up and were sitting at the dining table eating. While urging them to eat quickly, Sister-in-law Yu was sweeping the yard with a broom.

Hearing a knock on the door, he chuckled and said, "What brings you here? Old Yu went to your house to look for Zhou Lao Er and ran into him, didn't he?"

"Everything has been agreed upon. Thanks to Brother Yu for his advice, we can save money on materials when we build the courtyard," Jiang Ci said, taking out the last of the cornbread in the house and giving it to Sister-in-law Yu.

“Yangyang’s dad and I are going to the supply and marketing cooperative. It’s quite far from the town, and it’s not convenient with two kids. I wonder if you could watch them for a day? This is their food ration.”

The Zhou family only had three steamed buns left, and Jiang Ci took them all.

Since she had asked for help, she couldn't come empty-handed. In addition to Zhou Miao and Zhou Yang's food rations, Jiang Ci took two extra portions as a favor to Yu Dasao.

Upon seeing this, Sister-in-law Yu immediately said sternly, "What are you doing bringing this over? Do you think my family would be short of food for these two children?"

"Take it back! Take it back!"

Sister-in-law Yu spoke firmly, and after thinking for a moment, Jiang Ci did not insist. "Then I'll trouble you to take good care of these two children."

Sister-in-law Yu looked down at Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao. Their clothes were washed clean, and their faces, hands, and hair were all tidied up. Although they were a bit thinner and darker, they looked more energetic than before.

Sister-in-law Yu laughed and said, "Okay, you go ahead and I'll take care of things for you for a day."
