"Didn't you already recover?" Jiang Ci asked lazily, raising her hand to check the time in the light from outside the door. She mumbled, "It's already two in the morning. If you don't sleep, I still have to."
Zhou Mingli understood her unspoken meaning. After a long silence, he reached out and picked her up, blanket and all.
To avoid waking the two children, Jiang Ci lowered her voice and asked, "What is it?"
Zhou Mingli slammed the door shut behind him, turned off the light, and groped his way back to his bedroom in the dark.
"I didn't want to do it with you because of what happened downstairs."
Zhou Mingli placed her on the bed, supporting himself on either side of her. It was too dark for Jiang Ci to see his expression, but she could hear him say, "Jiang Ci, I'm doing this with you because of a man's love for a woman, his desire for her, the lowest and most primal impulse."
It was unclear whether Jiang Ci had listened to him or not; she simply reached out from under the covers and patted him, saying, "You have to go to work at four o'clock, don't you really need to sleep?"
Zhou Mingli chuckled softly. After spending several hours with her, he didn't say anything, but simply crawled into her bed and hugged her.
Is it warm?
"Warm." Jiang Ci automatically found her favorite spot, buried her head in it and took several deep breaths before saying to Zhou Mingli, "Work out hard."
If she lost her big abs, she'd kick him out.
Zhou Mingli was both amused and exasperated. "Okay."
The next day, as soon as it was light, Zhou Mingli got up and went out to make breakfast for Jiang Ci and the two children before going to work.
I arrived at work at exactly 4:50.
He, along with another kitchen helper and Chef Mo, were among the first to arrive at the company, as they were responsible for preparing breakfast for the employees.
As usual, Zhou Mingli first turned on the fire and added water, then washed the ingredients that had been soaking for a long time and put them into the pot to start cooking porridge.
Chef Mo arrived a little late. When he came over and saw Zhou Mingli working, he went over and patted him on the shoulder, saying, "Well done."
Zhou Mingli: "?"
He looked puzzled.
Chef Mo chuckled, "You don't know what my son does?"
Zhou Mingli wasn't conducting a census, so of course he didn't know who was in Chef Mo's family or what they did for a living.
He shook his head honestly, "I don't know."
"My son works in the Public Security Bureau!" Chef Mo said proudly. "He told me about what happened at your newspaper's staff quarters last night. As soon as I heard the name Zhou Mingli and the name of the staff quarters, I knew it was you!"
Zhou Mingli feigned shyness, "It's mainly because my wife is so capable. She knocked the knife out of that madman's hand with one blow. Otherwise, I wouldn't have dared to rush up and subdue him."
"You're pretty good too! You did something that others didn't dare to do, which is already much better than the people at the newspaper!" Chef Mo looked at Zhou Mingli with great admiration. "Just wait, once the police have results, your reward will definitely be sent directly to our municipal government."
"You subdued the thug! When the leaders find out today, they'll definitely praise you highly!"
Zhou Mingli smiled shyly again, looking quite embarrassed.
You have to understand that the criminal injured several people, and one person's life is still unknown. If such a dangerous person is allowed to roam outside, he will definitely become a major disaster. Zhou Mingli and his wife caught the criminal together, and they will definitely deserve credit. Zhou Mingli is a kitchen helper in the municipal government and a formal employee!
The credit for subduing the criminals naturally became the credit for their unit. Not only would the Public Security Bureau give them a reward, but their unit would also definitely reward Zhou Mingli.
Given the precedent of rewarding merit, and based on Chef Mo's years of experience watching the drama unfold, Zhou Mingli is likely to get a raise.
If there is an opportunity to be named a master chef in the future, Zhou Mingli will be given priority in the selection because of this achievement.
Zhou Mingli himself was unaware of the situation, and Chef Mo didn't say much either. He just patted Zhou Mingli on the shoulder with a meaningful look and went to busy himself with making breakfast for his boss.
In Beijing, a city that's neither too big nor too small, there are no secrets.
If Chef Mo knows this, then the well-informed leaders will naturally know it too.
Even Cheng Wenyun's immediate supervisor knew about this.
This morning, when Cheng Wenyun went to the cafeteria for lunch, he happened to run into a senior leader walking on the road. He quickly walked over and overheard the senior leader talking to others about something he didn't know yet.
"Several people were injured at the newspaper's staff quarters, including one seriously injured person who is currently unconscious in the hospital. Our people went to the newspaper office and the police station early this morning to find out the details."
The newspaper office staff quarters.
Cheng Wenyun paused, remembering that Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli's family lived over there.
That was the house allocated to his cousin, Cheng Shaotian. Since he was stationed abroad, the house was vacant. His uncle called Shaotian and, after obtaining his consent, let Jiang Ci's family live there.
The senior leader saw Cheng Wenyun and waved to him.
Cheng Wenyun quickly followed, "Boss, what are you talking about?"
The leader said in a serious tone, "You don't know yet, do you? Last night, a very serious case of assault by a former educated youth occurred near the newspaper office's staff quarters. That educated youth, completely naked, attempted to assault a woman. After being stopped, he took a knife and injured six people in succession. The most seriously injured is still in critical condition!"
Cheng Wenyun's heart sank.
They were already overwhelmed by the deteriorating public security caused by the large-scale return of educated youth to the city, and then this serious case of educated youth injuring someone occurred.
