Guo Zhen made a bold assumption, and the more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed.
He paced back and forth in his study for a long time before deciding to send a telegram the next day.
He needed to send someone to Shanding Brigade again to search for Huang Zhiyuan's body.
Guo Zhen's gaze was fixed on the papers, and he thought coldly: Jiang Ci must be even more difficult to deal with than he appears on the surface!
...
Zhou Mingli waited for four days, and finally, while he was at work, he heard someone calling him.
"Comrade Zhou Mingli! You have a phone call!"
Zhou Mingli put down what he was holding and ran out.
Chef Mo felt a gust of wind blow past him, and when he turned around, the person was gone.
Why are you running so fast?
Another kitchen helper muttered something.
Chef Mo looked around the kitchen but Zhou Mingli was nowhere to be seen. He shook his head with a smile and said, "Xiao Zhou's wife is away on a business trip. Haven't you noticed how absent-minded he's been these past few days? He must be feeling anxious because he hasn't been able to see his wife."
"Oh...I see..." the kitchen helper said, somewhat embarrassed.
Zhou Mingli had already run quickly to the phone. He was running so fast that he was out of breath. "Which one is my number?"
"Here you go, hurry up and tell me, we can't waste time."
Zhou Mingli hummed in agreement, took out a handkerchief to wipe his hands, and then answered the phone.
"Jiang Ci?"
"It's me." Jiang Ci's bright and clear voice, slightly distorted, reached Zhou Mingli's ears through the microphone.
The anxiety I've been feeling these past few days has finally subsided.
Zhou Mingli breathed a sigh of relief and asked in a low voice, "Did you feel unwell on the way? Where are you now?"
Hearing his question, Jiang Ci couldn't help but laugh, "Of course everything went smoothly, and we arrived in Hong Kong yesterday. In two hours... that is, at ten o'clock, we can leave the port directly."
"The journey by water will take about a month. If we are able to land and use a telephone or telegram during that time, I will contact you."
Zhou Mingli's fingers twitched. "Okay, everything is fine at home, you don't need to worry."
"I know." Jiang Ci certainly believed in Zhou Mingli's abilities, but...
She paused, her gaze falling on the person looking at the phone, and lowered her voice, "How about you? Are you alright?"
Her reply was a soft chuckle, "Not so good."
"Jiang Ci, I miss you so much."
"It's only been three days, but I already understand what it means for each day to feel like a year."
Jiang Ci felt her heart was being crumpled.
The call was quickly cut off.
Under the operator's strange and inexplicable gaze, Zhou Mingli put the receiver back. "Thank you. My wife might call in the next few months. Please call me directly whenever I'm at work."
"……good."
It's as if I didn't call him.
This week, the comrade's feelings for his lover are truly deep.
A grown man said, "I miss you."
Hmm~
So corny.
Jiang Ci composed herself, turned around, and went back into the house to get the gift for Mr. Lu.
Mr. Lu is at the hotel; she needs to go find him and ask him for information.
"Unauthorized personnel are not allowed on the fifth floor, ma'am."
A burly bodyguard wearing sunglasses stopped Jiang Ci at the elevator entrance.
Jiang Ci blinked and said, "My godfather is the husband of your Mr. Lu, who married my cousin in Beijing. Logically speaking, I should call Mr. Lu my cousin's uncle."
The bodyguard wearing sunglasses was stunned for a moment when he heard this.
What godfather, cousin, or uncle?
What's the connection between these?
Coincidentally, the elevator doors opened at that moment.
The person standing inside happened to be Mr. Lu, whom they were talking about.
Jiang Ci smiled perfectly. "Mr. Lu, do you remember me?"
Mr. Lu looked the woman up and down, who was smiling but neither arrogant nor humble. "Ms. Jiang?"
“It’s me.” Jiang Ci nodded and said frankly, “Do you still remember Cheng Huasheng, Mr. Cheng? He is your nephew.”
“Of course,” Mr. Lu said calmly. “I don’t need you to remind me that I have a relative in Beijing.”
Jiang Ci's smile remained unchanged. "When Mr. Cheng heard that I would be passing through Hong Kong, he specifically asked me to come and give my regards to Mr. Lu."
The elevator doors, decorated with vintage brass, make a creaking sound as if they are about to close.
Mr. Lu said calmly, "Come on up."
Jiang Ci readily agreed and got on the elevator.
As Jiang Ci continued upwards, she realized that there were bodyguards guarding the elevator entrances and stairwells on every floor of the hotel.
The entire path was carpeted, and no one made a sound when they walked on it.
Jiang Ci followed him into the room. Mr. Lu sat on the black leather sofa, put his cane aside, glanced at the clock, and said, "You have ten minutes."
Jiang Ci didn't seem eager to express all her thoughts at all.
She smiled and placed what she was carrying on the table. "These are specialties from Beijing. I hope Mr. Lu won't find them offensive."
Mr. Lu glanced at it and then calmly looked away, remaining motionless and showing no intention of opening it.
Jiang Ci sat on a single sofa not too far from Mr. Lu, not minding that he hadn't opened it. It was just an excuse; if she really wanted to give Mr. Lu a gift that touched his heart, Jiang Ci knew she couldn't do it right now.
Jiang Ci didn't play the game of who would lose the argument by speaking first with Mr. Lu. She simply smiled and asked, "Mr. Lu, do all the cargo ships for export under the Ministry of Foreign Trade depart from ports under your control?"
Mr. Lu leaned back. "Most of them."
Jiangci, "What about the tea and porcelain orders that led to last year's deals?"
