Chapter 4: Egg Exchange

She and Zhou Mingli were college classmates and got married after graduation.

It is not a marriage, but a mutually beneficial cooperation.

She needed a family, while Zhou Mingli needed money and connections to help him gain a foothold.

Zhou Mingli is a man who never gets tired.

Jiang Ci calls himself a workaholic and a career-oriented person. He can stay away from home for a month just for work.

But Zhou Mingli can work around the clock for years.

After getting married, she and Zhou Mingli met only a handful of times.

Although he had no emotions, Zhou Mingli's responses in various situations were too awkward. Several times, he was deliberately made to look bad, causing everyone to burst into laughter.

There was no other way, so Jiang Ci had to teach him personally, step by step.

"Zhou Mingli, you better take this seriously. Don't embarrass me at the next banquet."

She taught and warned him at the same time.

Zhou Mingli kept silent and just studied seriously.

When Jiang Ci asked him again if he had learned it, Zhou Mingli would nod attentively.

Jiang Ci let go of his hand and let him do it himself.

After Zhou Mingli finished, he looked at Jiang Ci. As soon as their eyes met, just like Zhou Miao, he hurriedly looked away, as if he had done something wrong.

Thinking back to this, Jiang Ci's eyes were filled with complicated emotions.

Zhou Mingli quickly learned what he was taught and became more and more competent at banquets. He shed the inferiority and cowardice of the poor and became bold, mature and at ease.

After teaching Zhou Mingli how to handle necessary situations, Jiang Ci threw herself into her work.

In just three years, Zhou Mingli, with the help of his father-in-law's family, gained a firm foothold, his company grew bigger and bigger, and he also shed his naivety and became more and more calm and reserved.

No matter who sees her, they have to praise her, "Boss Jiang is really good at foresight. Boss Zhou's company is getting bigger and bigger."

Husband and wife are one, praising Zhou Mingli is equivalent to praising her, and Jiang Ci naturally accepts it.

She thought their collaboration was going smoothly and had no intention of divorcing, but...

Jiang Ci sneered.

Hearing Jiang Ci's displeased sneer, Zhou Miao instinctively shrank back and quickly said, "Mom, I'll learn to cook soon..."

What kind of food can a little kid, who's not even as tall as the stove, make?

Jiang Ci looked at her fearful expression and recalled how the previous "Jiang Ci" had treated her, and sighed.

Jiang Ci got up, gently patted her head with the back of her hand, took a ladle and added water to the pot, then put the last two steamed buns into the pot to heat them.

Zhou Miao covered her head in a daze and remained there for a long time.

"Miaomiao, the fire needs to be put out!" Zhou Yang shouted to Zhou Miao.

Zhou Miao snapped out of her daze and hurriedly added firewood to the stove.

Jiang Ci didn't know how to cook. She didn't know how to prepare the dishes or the cornmeal.

Two hot steamed buns are not enough for three people, no matter how you calculate it.

To prevent her from wasting food, Jiang Ci divided the ten catties of cornmeal in half, poured out a bowl of it, and headed to her neighbor's house where smoke was rising from the chimney before it got dark.

The Yu family was cooking when a child saw Jiang Ci and ran into the house, yelling, "Mom! That bad educated youth Jiang Ci is here!"

Jiang Ci: "..."

Kid, don't fall into my hands, or I'll show you what a bad adult is like.

A woman emerged from the kitchen, glancing warily toward the doorway.

The woman's voice was loud and clear, and she said with obvious disdain, "What are you doing here? If you're here to return something, that's fine. If not, you'd better leave now. I don't have anything else to lend you!"

Jiang Ci had no words to express her suffering. "Sister Yu, I've come to return the cornmeal I borrowed before."

When Sister-in-law Yu looked over, she noticed that Jiang Ci was carrying a cloth bag and a bowl of cornmeal.

Jiang Ci handed over the cloth bag and said, "There should be five pounds in here. I don't know if it's enough to pay it back. If there's still something missing, please tell me and I'll find a way to get it."

Sister-in-law Yu's expression softened a bit. She took the cloth bag, lifted it, and estimated that it indeed weighed about five pounds. "You still have some conscience. You've borrowed grain from my family for so long, and you still know to return it."

Jiang Ci smiled and said, "What is borrowed must be returned. My family was in financial difficulty before, and I was unable to repay it on time. That was my fault."

Hearing this, Yu's sister-in-law felt relieved. As the saying goes, "Don't hit someone who smiles at you." Yu's sister-in-law's expression softened. She glanced at Jiang Ci and asked, "What's the cornmeal in your bowl for?"

Jiang Ci said, "As you know, I was beaten by Li Hu at the threshing ground today, and I still have a head injury. It's getting late, and I don't have the energy to cook. There are only two cornbreads left at home, which isn't enough."

"So... I was thinking of using this bowl of cornmeal to exchange for some steamed buns."

"You can change it however you like, I'm happy to do whatever it takes."

Sister-in-law Yu understood what she meant. Jiang Ci had committed many evil deeds, and she shouldn't have had much contact with her. However, the two children in Jiang Ci's family were indeed pitiful.

Looking at the bowl of cornmeal, Yu's wife brought it over unhappily, "Wait."

Sister Yu carried the cornmeal in and came out again soon after, with three more cornbread buns in the bowl.

It was still steaming, clearly freshly steamed.

Jiang Ci accepted it and said gratefully, "Thank you, Sister-in-law Yu."

"I only agreed to change them for you because I felt sorry for the two children. If you really feel guilty, you should treat them better," said Sister Yu coldly.

Jiang Ci still smiled, "You're right to teach me a lesson. After being pushed by Li Hu and lying in the medical station, I realized that nothing is better than taking good care of myself and my child."

Sister-in-law Yu said, "It's good that you understand!"

Jiang Ci took out fifty cents from her pocket and said with a smile, "So, Sister Yu, do you have any eggs at home? I'd like to trade some with you."
