The cicadas' chirping in the summer was so noisy that he couldn't hear anything else, and the summer heat was so long that it felt like an eternity.
Like one of the few people in the world who has won the lottery, he was dizzy and his eardrums were buzzing so loudly that he couldn't hear anything.
His gaze lingered on Jiang Ci for a long time without him saying a word.
Jiang Ci didn't seem to have much patience. Seeing that he remained silent, she shrugged and tried to leave.
She had just turned her head when her arm was grabbed.
It was so thin and soft that he dared not use force.
But Zhou Mingli could only exert force. He looked down at Jiang Ci, at her dark hair tucked behind her ears, at her small and cute earlobes, and at her delicate and jade-like skin.
"Besides me, who else do you want to marry?" Zhou Mingli's voice was hoarse, like the roughest sand on a beach.
His eyes were terrifyingly sinister, but when Jiang Ci looked back, he quickly concealed his expression and became silent and reserved.
Jiang Ci didn't answer, "You haven't answered my question yet."
His hand trembled violently, following his heartbeat. Then, Zhou Mingli's tense nerves and back suddenly slumped. He closed his eyes and heard himself say, "Okay."
He answered Jiang Ci, but didn't get an answer from her. Nevertheless, Zhou Mingli skipped the interview, went back to his dormitory to get his household registration book and ID card, and went to the Civil Affairs Bureau with Jiang Ci.
She took off her graduation gown, revealing a beautiful white dress underneath, which made her look like a white peony, pure yet blooming with layers of enchanting petals.
They took their wedding photos at the Civil Affairs Bureau, and their marriage certificate was very small.
"Zhou Mingli, can you please not be so nervous?"
"Zhou Mingli, relax your shoulders a bit."
"Zhou Mingli! Don't push me! The photographer told you to move closer to me, not to lean on me!"
"Zhou Mingli, I take back what I said about you before. You're really stupid!"
While taking a picture of their marriage certificate, Jiang Ci scolded him. Her skirt swept around his legs, its presence felt even through the fabric of her black cotton pants. He glanced down and saw only the skirt swaying like waves.
Just like his mood at this moment, it was uncertain.
The photographer laughed and said to him, "Your wife really talks about you a lot!"
Zhou Mingli took the photos in a sullen voice, stared at them blankly for a long time, and carefully and disbelievingly traced the small Jiang porcelain in the photos.
Jiang Ci is smiling in the photo, while he looks as serious as a machine.
After receiving their marriage certificate, Jiang Ci sent him an address and told him to pack his things and move to that address.
Immediately afterwards, she transferred some money to him.
One million
The number suffixed with "one" struck Zhou Mingli's heart like a heavy blow.
Strangely, he felt no joy or surprise, but rather was enveloped in a heavy feeling.
His dark, unspoken emotions weighed heavily on Zhou Mingli's heart.
For Jiangci, one million is just a number.
If even the Qianjiang porcelain he cherishes most doesn't like him, then what exactly does he need to offer to earn her even a glance?
Their marriage was based on a ridiculous reason given by Jiang Ci, and their six-year dream ended with Jiang Ci's indifferent statement, "I don't need a husband anymore."
Zhou Mingli's heart clenched, then was suddenly gripped tightly, the fine, dense pain just like those two agonizing months, constantly tormenting him.
The day Jiang Ci transferred his first huge sum of money to him was their wedding day. How could Zhou Mingli forget that?
He wouldn't tell Jiang Ci what was on his mind, and he didn't want to bring up the divorce again and push Jiang Ci away from him once more.
Zhou Mingli could only struggle to ride his bicycle and awkwardly change the subject, "Tomorrow we'll renovate the outhouse."
"Zhou Mingli! Can you please not bring up the toilet at a time like this!"
Zhou Mingli laughed. Without turning around, he could picture Jiang Ci's expression right now—a furrowed brow, her hand covering her nose, as if she could already smell and see a scene and smell more terrifying than an abyss and more foul than poison gas.
She absolutely loathed that outhouse.
Zhou Mingli's laughter grew increasingly unrestrained, and Jiang Ci pinched his waist hard.
Jiang Ci gritted her teeth, "The toilet must be renovated tomorrow!"
Zhou Mingli: "Okay, I'll definitely renovate it."
Unbeknownst to the couple, after a few words from Widow Wang and the eldest son they had seen, the conversation abruptly shifted to Zhou Mingli.
Widow Wang said in a soft and charming tone, "I won't come here with you anymore. It's such a hassle, and it's easy for people to see us."
Old Zhou took three yuan out of his pocket and gave it to Widow Wang. "Are you afraid of being seen?"
"That's because you're too fierce." Widow Wang winked at him, stuffed the money into her pocket, and then said with a glint in her eye, "You're still the best. Apart from Xia Lei, there aren't many people in the brigade as fierce and brave as you."
Zhou Laoda was flattered and felt quite pleased with herself, but when she heard Xia Lei's name, she glanced at her and gave a forced smile, "What? You slept with Xia Zhiqing?"
"How could I possibly have that ability?" Widow Wang said slowly, tugging at her clothes. "I'm nowhere near as good as him. Old Zhou, you and your brother are both tall and strong, so he must be just as good as you, right?"
Boss Zhou's face darkened. "You're really something else, always wanting more than you have."
Widow Wang winked at Boss Zhou again, "What are you saying? At least just now, I belonged to you."
Zhou Laoda sneered, then his expression suddenly changed. He seemed to have thought of something, and his smile turned sinister. "If you can hook up with Zhou Lao Er, I'll give you twenty yuan."
