The two sides, each with their own thoughts, sat in the same car and headed towards the nearest city.
In the afternoon, we stopped the car on the road. The surrounding area was a vast plain, open and quiet.
The people sitting in the back exchanged glances and cursed the group for being cunning.
They're not given any cover at all; they can't get anything done in this situation.
Xu San peed somewhere with his legs tucked between his legs, while Zhou Mingli switched places with Brother Yu in the car and would drive for the rest of the journey.
Brother Yu was starving and started looking for the food they had brought along the way.
Zhou Mingli stopped him, saying, "Eat after the car starts moving."
Brother Yu paused, said "Oh," and stopped what he was doing.
A short while later, Xu San returned, his gaze sweeping over the group of people in the back row.
Those two men definitely didn't have good eyesight; they looked quite fierce.
Xu San has traveled to various places over the past few years and has seen this kind of look before.
This group of people might really be as Second Brother said, a bunch of kidnappers who've seen blood!
Xu San looked away and quickly got into the car.
The car was never turned off. As soon as the door closed, Zhou Mingli pressed the clutch and started the car.
Brother Yu immediately went to find something to eat.
The person sitting behind sniffed, and the old woman and her second daughter-in-law muttered, "Why do I smell dried meat?"
The old woman said, "What nonsense are you spouting? I think you're starving!"
"Mom, we've run out of food on this journey, I'm definitely hungry," the second daughter-in-law said pitifully.
Not to mention her, the others nodded in agreement.
The old woman said it was true that the driver who took them had abandoned them.
The truck driver was also very wary, sensing that they weren't good people. He asked to stop so they could use the restroom. As soon as the group got out of the truck, the driver immediately drove off, much to his wife's anger.
After walking for two days and running out of food, they tried to hitchhike, but no car was willing to stop and give them a ride.
"Let's be patient. Once we steal the car, everything in it will be ours. There's bound to be food inside."
The old woman looked at the sun, which had moved to the west, and said, "It's going to get dark soon."
These people must need to stop and rest along the way, right?
Otherwise, how could the driver stand it?
Waiting for them to rest is the perfect opportunity for them to steal the car.
It's still before the end of the first lunar month, and it gets dark early. Unlike later years, the roads aren't lined with streetlights, so it's very dark. Only Zhou Mingli and his group had their lights on in their car as they drove towards the city.
The people behind them were freezing cold and huddled together, shivering.
The eldest daughter-in-law said, "Mom, this car is so cold."
The old woman said, "We're cold, and they must be cold too. Just bear with it a little longer, and they'll stop and rest in a while."
An hour has passed.
The car is still speeding along the road.
The people behind them were so cold they had lost all feeling.
The two children, who looked to be only one or two years old, were also making noises, as if they were about to wake up.
"Mom, I'm a little hungry!" the second son said to his wife.
The old woman still felt sorry for her sons, so after thinking it over, she divided the last bit of dry food between her eldest and second sons.
It was pitch black all around, and nothing could be seen. The old woman groped in the dark and gave two pieces of dry food to her eldest and second sons.
The eldest son's wife said, "Husband, I'm hungry too."
Upon hearing this, the old woman immediately became angry and scolded, "If you're hungry, then go hungry! What are you doing at the table when the men haven't even eaten their fill!"
The eldest son's wife shrank back, looking aggrieved and not daring to say anything more.
The shrewd second son kept quiet, stuffing the dry rations into his mouth in a few bites, offering neither to his wife nor his mother.
Once something goes into his mouth, no one can take it away.
I don't know how much time passed, but the car still didn't stop.
The old woman cursed, her voice trembling, "That damned driver! Does he have inexhaustible energy? He's been driving from day to night, and he's not tired yet!"
"Damn it, I'm freezing to death!"
The old woman couldn't take it anymore and started patting the cold metal sheet.
Cheng Shaojun was sitting in the back row, secretly peeking through the glass to see what the people behind him were doing. He vaguely saw an old, chrysanthemum-like face leaning against the glass, seemingly trying to see what the people in front of them were doing.
Zhou Mingli had arranged for a cloth to be hung over the glass long ago, so they could look out, but people outside couldn't see inside.
Brother Yu is resting now; he'll have to switch places with Zhou Mingli to drive in a bit.
Hearing the commotion, Zhou Mingli said, "It's very cold outside, they probably can't hold on any longer."
"Third brother, open the window a little and ask them what they want to do."
"Okay!"
Xu San immediately rolled down the window a crack and shouted outside, "What are you doing! You're making so much noise! Can't a person get any sleep?!"
Damn it, I'm freezing in the back while you guys are sleeping in the car!
The old woman was indignant and cursed even more fiercely in her heart, but she said pitifully, "Brothers! Look, it's getting dark. Why don't we find a place to rest? Your driver has been driving for several hours and must be tired. Why don't you get some sleep?"
Xu San roared, "Look at what you're saying! We're on our way, why are we resting? It's not even midnight yet!"
The old woman almost fainted.
Does this mean the bus won't stop until midnight?!
Let them freeze to death!
"Besides, aren't you going to stay with your eldest daughter? If we're in a hurry, we can get to the city earlier tomorrow so you can see your family sooner. Since you're getting a free ride, don't complain about this or that!"
