Logically speaking, after Zhou Ergou died, even if Widow Wang abandoned Zhou Huai, she could remarry, since she was still young. But for some reason, Widow Wang stayed in Zhou Ergou's house and did not remarry.
The government gave Widow Wang a large sum of compensation, and Widow Wang lived with Zhou Huai in Zhou Ergou's house. Zhou Ergou's younger brother and sister tried to take the house, but they couldn't beat Widow Wang.
"That widow Wang behaved herself for a few months, then she started seducing men." Sister-in-law Yu's eyes showed a hint of contempt as she said this. "At first, we didn't know anything about it, until we found out about the Qian family in the east end. You know the Qian family, whose relatives sell meat at the supply and marketing cooperative, right?"
Jiang Ci nodded. Zhou Mingli had those meat coupons, weren't they the meat he exchanged at the Qian family's place? Zhou Mingli had told her that.
"Aunt Qian's husband, oh dear, went to Zhou Ergou's house in the middle of the night to sleep with Widow Wang, and was discovered by Aunt Qian when she woke up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet!"
"You have no idea what that fight was like... blood splattered everywhere, the sky darkened! Aunt Qian eats well, is strong, and works at the slaughterhouse, so she's got a lot of strength! She's ruthless! She scratched her husband's face all over! Widow Wang didn't fare any better!"
Sister-in-law Yu spoke with great enthusiasm, which shows how big the scandal of Aunt Qian's husband's infidelity had been that night.
"So that's how you found out that Widow Wang often sleeps with the men in the production team?" Jiang Ci's ears perked up as she pressed for an answer.
"How loud is Aunt Qian's voice? When she howls, most of the villagers wake up. The old and young women who came to see the commotion saw quite a few amazing things when they arrived at Zhou Ergou's house!"
They had all sorts of things: the laying hens from this family, the fish from that family that just got new ones, the Dacron fabric that the richest man in the production team had bought—all sorts of random things!
The women knew their own belongings very well. When their husbands said something was missing, they would curse the thief as shameless in the yard.
As it turned out, all the stolen items were in Widow Wang's house!
Women have a keen eye for men's infidelity. What does it mean that their own things are found in Widow Wang's house?
Unless Widow Wang is a thief, it must have been delivered by her husband!
The women became increasingly suspicious, their faces growing darker with each passing thought. When they returned, they gave the women a thorough interrogation, and soon their shouts and curses could be heard throughout most of the village!
"The day after that night, I passed by Zhou Ergou's house, and there were several worn-out shoes thrown at her door!" Sister-in-law Yu snorted. "Even so, Widow Wang didn't stop. She still flirted with other women, slept with them, and took things as she pleased. When asked, she always said she got them by her own ability, and the women in the village couldn't do anything about it."
Jiang Ci was utterly dumbfounded.
Even though she had seen a lot of the world and knew a lot about the petty thieves in high society, at least the wealthy families she knew who did all sorts of despicable things knew how to cover their tracks. But Jiang Ci was still a rare sight to see someone like her who stayed at her deceased ex-husband's house to sell herself.
This truly exemplifies the saying, "A shameless person is invincible."
"Now you know what kind of person Widow Wang is, right? Zhou Ergou is such a good person. His name isn't nice, but he's a good man. He helped set up and build our production team's threshing ground. He's a good person too. When he came back from the army, he would help catch thieves." Sister-in-law Yu spoke of Zhou Ergou with great regret. "Tell me, how could such a good person like Zhou Ergou end up with such a wife? Xiao Huai has been ruined by her."
Jiang Ci had never met Zhou Huai, but after listening to what Sister-in-law Yu said, she felt in her heart that Zhou Ergou was indeed a responsible person.
“Sister-in-law, I understand what you’re saying. Don’t worry, if Zhou Mingli is really seduced by Widow Wang, then I have no reason to continue living with him, don’t you think?” Jiang Ci said with a smile.
Sister-in-law Yu patted her hand, "It's good that you understand."
Jiang Ci heard a lot of gossip, and walked much faster on her way back.
She wasn't actually worried that Zhou Mingli would fall for Widow Wang.
Zhou Mingli witnessed all of Widow Wang's scandalous affair with Boss Zhou yesterday. Even if Zhou Mingli is desperate, he wouldn't be interested in Widow Wang.
If he's right...
Jiang Ci could temporarily forget about what happened before she transmigrated into the book, but if he tried this again, Jiang Ci would just kick him out.
She returned home relaxed, only to find Zhou Mingli still laying bricks. While she was listening to gossip, Zhou Mingli had almost finished his work.
"Zhou Mingli, you work so fast!" Jiang Ci smiled and went over to help.
"There's not much work left, don't start," Zhou Mingli stopped her. "Could you get me a bowl of water?"
Jiang Ci saw that his forehead was covered in sweat, but she didn't refuse and went to the kitchen to pour him a bowl of water.
Zhou Mingli took the bowl. He was really thirsty and didn't mind that his hands were dirty. He brought the rim of the bowl to his lips and drank.
Some water accidentally spilled from his lips, sliding down his chin, across his jaw, and leaving noticeable watermarks on his Adam's apple, appearing faintly up and down.
Excessively sexy.
Jiang Ci stared at him for a while, then looked away and asked casually, "You didn't say anything to me today?"
Zhou Mingli finished drinking a large bowl of water, handed the bowl to Jiang Ci, put down what he was doing, and looked up at her, "Widow Wang?"
Jiang Ci, "Hmm?"
Zhou Mingli: "There's nothing to say. She came here to act, to trick me into spending my money."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Ci burst out laughing, her mood suddenly improving, and turned to walk towards the kitchen.
Zhou Mingli stared at Jiang Ci's retreating figure, bewildered, wondering why she had suddenly become happy.
In the morning, Jiang Ci chatted with Zhou Mingli, telling him gossip about Widow Wang. Zhou Mingli didn't feel tired at all, and before he knew it, he had finished laying the bricks.
Then he spread the remaining cement on top. The midday sun was scorching, and it would dry in less than two days.
