Chapter 6 They Are Not Our Children

"Don't move!" the doctor scolded. "I'm cleaning your wound, what are you doing moving around?!"

The man's lips moved, but his gaze was fixed on Jiang Ci, deep and reserved, as if he could see through everything.

Jiang Ci swayed slightly, but quickly regained her balance. She took a deep breath to calm her surging emotions and make herself appear less agitated.

Jiang Ci signaled him not to act rashly and just carried Zhou Miao to his side.

"Where have you been? You haven't come home for days!" Jiang Ci's voice trembled slightly, but she seemed relatively calm.

The man seemed to have not spoken for a long time, his voice was very hoarse, "There was an accident."

The doctor glanced at the man, then at Jiang Ci.

"Your family is the same. Since you're injured, you should be injured together, right?"

The doctor told the educated youth to continue cleaning the man's wounds, while he went back to get a thermometer to take Zhou Miao's temperature.

Thirty-nine degrees eight.

The doctor asked, "How long have you had the fever?"

Jiang Ci: "She was fine when we were eating tonight, but suddenly she started crying from the pain. When I touched her body, I found that she was very hot, so I came over immediately."

"Give her an injection to bring down her fever first."

The doctor went inside to get the needle and medicine, and Jiang Ci held Zhou Miao and watched the educated youth apply medicine to the man's wound.

When their eyes met, their gazes were quite complex.

After Zhou Miao received an antipyretic injection, she also took a packet of medicine at the medical station.

Jiang Ci stood up and paid the medical bills.

After deducting her medical expenses and the money for buying eggs, Jiang Ci only had six yuan left from the ten yuan she extorted from Li Hu, and she took it all.

I had thought I would only give Zhou Miao injections and medicine, so there would be some leftovers, but I didn't expect there would be another patient here.

Jiang Ci not only gave away all the money, but was still short two yuan.

Behind her, Jiang Ci always felt that the man was looking at her.

Jiang Ci was sweating profusely and looked rather embarrassed.

She used to be very generous; she almost never left empty-handed when she saw something she liked, let alone couldn't afford to pay for it.

Now... it's not even enough to cover the medical expenses.

Jiang Ci was a little embarrassed.

"You two go back first, and remember to bring those two yuan over tomorrow."

The man responded and stood up.

He wasn't noticeable when he was sitting there, but when he stood up, he was a head taller than Jiang Ci.

He limped behind Jiang Ci, and the three of them left the medical station.

The night was dark, with only the moonlight still bright enough to faintly illuminate the way back.

After nearly a minute of silence, Jiang Ci asked tentatively, "Zhou...Zhou Mingli?"

"It's me."

Zhou Mingli said in a low voice, "Jiang Ci, it's me."

Jiang Ci, who had planned to never see him again after the divorce, felt a sense of relief and tears welling up in her eyes when she realized that the abusive husband in the original body had become her ex-husband, Zhou Mingli.

At least she's not fighting this battle alone.

Jiang Ci quickly asked, "Why are you... here?"

Zhou Mingli shook his head. "When I woke up, I was lying in a big pit. My whole body ached, and I had some unfamiliar memories. That's when I learned that the original owner of this body went to steal things with his brother. They were discovered by that family, and his older brother pushed him and ran away."

"This is the injury on my body. After I woke up, it took me a long time to walk back."

Jiang Ci sighed a little, "Although my experience is different from yours, it's not very good either."

Jiang Ci then recounted the events that had occurred after she woke up to Zhou Mingli.

Zhou Mingli listened attentively.

"Although I don't quite believe it, we have indeed traveled into a period novel, and it's still that vicious male and female supporting characters."

At this point, Jiang Ci's mood became somewhat heavy, and after a long while, she asked Zhou Mingli, "How are Mom and Dad?"

Zhou Mingli remained silent. "I don't know."

Jiang Ci: "You don't know?"

Zhou Mingli shook his head. "According to the time calculation, we should have all come here after the accident. No one went to see my parents."

The parents here refer to Jiang Ci's parents. Zhou Mingli only has a grandparent, and they passed away long ago.

Jiang Ci keenly noticed the key point in his words, "What happened after you came out of the Civil Affairs Bureau?"

Zhou Mingli countered with a question, "You don't remember?"

Jiang Ci: "What do you remember?"

Zhou Mingli rubbed his heart, which still felt intensely constricted, and said, "We... you had just left the Civil Affairs Bureau when an out-of-control car rushed towards you."

The car that was coming towards her, how could he also be in an accident?

Jiang Ci stopped walking, and Zhou Mingli thought she would suddenly brake and almost hit her.

Jiang Ci turned to look at him, "You didn't save me, but we got hit by a car together?"

Zhou Mingli did not answer, which Jiang Ci took as tacit agreement.

She continued walking forward without saying anything else.

Zhou Mingli is a man of few words; if Jiang Ci doesn't speak, he won't take the initiative to speak either.

Although Zhou Miao was very light, she was still a three-year-old child and weighed several dozen kilograms. Jiang Ci carried her all the way, and her arms were very tired. She had to bounce her up and down along the way to move her swollen and sore arms.

Zhou Mingli said softly, "Let me carry you."

“You’re covered in injuries. What if you move too much and aggravate your wounds and cause them to bleed?” Jiang Ci replied, “I still owe the clinic two yuan in medical fees.”

Zhou Mingli looked at her head, which was bandaged, and asked, "Don't you have an injury on your head too?"

Both of them paused simultaneously. Jiang Ci couldn't help but chuckle, trying to make the best of a bad situation. "You've never seen me look this disheveled before, have you?"

In the past, wherever Jiang Ci went, she was always the center of attention, if not dazzlingly so. Whatever she did, she was always confident and capable, and it seemed that no difficulty was insurmountable in front of her.
