Zhao Wei's wife, Chunhua, looked down on Widow Wang the most. Every time she saw her, she would scold her for being immoral. Widow Wang was naturally indignant, so the two often quarreled, and it wasn't uncommon for them to fight.
How could Widow Wang be a match for Chunhua, who did manual labor every day? She couldn't beat that shrew Chunhua and always ended up getting hurt.
Widow Wang was furious. As she walked, she arrived at the school. Looking at Zhou Huai in the classroom, she thought to herself, "Why don't I just sell this brat? And then sell Zhou Ergou's house too. With a few hundred yuan, where can I go? It would be so much better."
But this idea was just a thought. Now, you need a letter of introduction to go anywhere, and selling children is even more out of the question. Besides, Zhou Huai is the orphan of a martyr. If she really did that, she might end up in jail.
Widow Wang's eyes darted around, and her gaze landed on Zhao Wei.
Zhao Wei was a bookworm who spent all his time reading, appearing to be a virtuous gentleman who was unyielding to reason. However, he was very easy to seduce. As soon as Widow Wang touched Zhao Wei's hand, he immediately hugged her, and the two of them did this and that in the empty office.
This Zhao Wei is a man controlled by his lower body. Every time Widow Wang approaches him, it doesn't take more than a minute before he takes the bait.
After that, whenever Widow Wang encountered Chunhua, she felt a secret sense of pride.
Chunhua, so what if you're powerful? So what if your family is wealthy? Doesn't your man still let me sleep with him? Doesn't your husband still have to give me the money your parents earn?
Widow Wang grabbed Zhao Wei's arm, her voice soft and charming, her tone shifting three times in a single sentence.
Zhao Wei pushed her hand away, "What are you doing in broad daylight?"
"Just say what's on your mind, don't beat around the bush."
Widow Wang gave Zhao Wei a resentful look, inwardly cursing the scoundrel, "Remember to come find me in the grove tonight when you're on patrol!"
Zhao Wei glanced at her. "You came looking for me while on patrol?"
Widow Wang glared at the man, "Oh dear, just leave it at that. Remember to bring Zhou Lao Er along, otherwise if someone sees us, they'll all suspect that you and I are having an affair!"
Zhao Wei stared at her intently, a mocking smile on his face. "What? You've taken a fancy to Zhou Lao Er again?"
"How could I possibly like him? He's a tyrant, I don't like him at all~" Widow Wang gently patted Zhao Wei's chest, "The person I like is you~"
Zhao Wei snorted, brushed her hand away, and turned to leave.
"Hey, Xiao Zhao, are you going to help your sister or not?"
Zhao Wei said, "Just wait in the woods."
Widow Wang: "I'll definitely thank you properly later!"
Zhao Wei glanced at Widow Wang and cursed her inwardly as a despicable woman.
Could Zhao Wei really be interested in someone who can only survive by seducing men?
Pooh!
It's just sleeping with him a few times. He's a high school student, how could he possibly be interested in people from the Shanding Brigade?
He would have left long ago if he hadn't lacked a letter of introduction!
Once he got the letter of introduction, he took the money from his father-in-law's house and left. He didn't like Chunhua, that stupid wife, or her two stupid children!
"Who wants to live in this mountain valley with a bunch of peasants? I'm a high school student."
As Zhao Wei walked, he muttered curses under his breath, his eyes revealing undisguised disdain.
If he hadn't slept with Widow Wang, and considered the bond between husband and wife, he wouldn't have bothered helping her. In fact, he wanted to use this opportunity to get rid of her, since he needed a letter of introduction to return to the city and couldn't afford to get entangled with her any longer.
Once Widow Wang and Old Man Zhou have some kind of entanglement, he will take the opportunity to threaten Old Man Zhou and Widow Wang and control them.
A sharp glint flashed in Zhao Wei's eyes.
After a busy day, night arrived as scheduled.
Zhou Mingli and Brother Yu arrived late. He and Jiang Ci first delivered food to the old man in the cowshed and ate their own meal before going to the threshing ground. So by the time they arrived, all the people they had arranged to patrol that night had already arrived.
Brother Yu had no idea what was going to happen today. The joy of making money made him happy all day. He had a good relationship with Er Zhuang, so he went over and patted Er Zhuang on the shoulder and said to him, "Today you will be patrolling with Er Zhuang. Be careful and take care of your Er Zhuang."
"Huh? Brother Fugui, who do you want me to take care of?" Erzhuang's eyes widened. "Take care of Zhou Lao Er?"
Brother Yu retorted, "What? You don't want to?"
Although he didn't like Zhou Mingli, Erzhuang had been indebted to his elder brother, so he could only reluctantly say, "Okay, I know."
The dried wheat was all gathered together and covered with plastic tarpaulins to prevent it from getting wet if it suddenly rained in the middle of the night.
The brigade had flashlights, and the men on night watch slept on makeshift beds built around the wheat fields.
Anyway, it's not cold now, just a lot of mosquitoes.
But what's a grown man like me afraid of mosquito bites?
The first patrol group of four, along with the militia, patrolled the area around the threshing ground with flashlights at all times.
It was already dark. People in rural areas go to bed early, around nine or ten o'clock. All the lights were turned off, except for the stars overhead and the light from the flashlights shining around.
They need to patrol for an hour, and then take over for the next shift around 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Zhou Mingli's team was the second patrol group. He lay on the makeshift bed, staring at the starry sky. The other men on night watch weren't sleepy either, chatting away. Zhou Mingli couldn't hear a word they said; his mind was filled with thoughts of his family.
Although he had already discussed with Jiang Ci how to deal with any unexpected events that might occur today, how could Zhou Mingli not worry about leaving her alone at home?
