Zhou Yang nodded seriously, "That's right, you can't eat food from outsiders!"
Being lectured by two children so much younger than her, Zhou Huai felt extremely embarrassed and nodded awkwardly.
When her cornbread buns arrived, Zhou Huai was already swallowing her saliva incessantly, but she still broke one off and handed it to Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao.
"Here you go."
Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao both shook their heads, "Sister Xiao Huai, you eat!"
They need to save their stomachs for meat!
"You can eat by yourself, we still have some vegetables."
Zhou Huai paused for a moment, looked at the steamed bun in his hand, and then took a big bite.
She was starving, and after the first bite, she ate voraciously and quickly.
Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao were dumbfounded.
"Sister Xiaohuai, eat slowly, don't eat so fast, be careful not to choke." Zhou Miao pushed her water to Zhou Huai and said in a serious tone.
Zhou Huai seemed not to have heard Zhou Miao's words at all. He finished the broken-up steamed bun in a few bites, and then another half.
She didn't eat any pickled vegetables, and she ate the whole big steamed bun clean.
Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli looked at each other for a while, both feeling somewhat helpless.
She looks somewhat like Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao a few days ago; she seems to have never been full, and doesn't feel satiated when she puts food in her mouth.
"Alright, you haven't even eaten the pickled vegetables you grabbed yet, have you? Eat them with the steamed bun." Jiang Ci stopped her from eating the steamed bun dry and pushed the pickled vegetables towards her to eat.
Zhou Huai came to his senses and felt embarrassed by how quickly he had wolfed down his food. He ate a bite of pickled vegetables and a bite of steamed bun, still not very slowly.
"Go buy two more steamed buns later. You'll be staying with the patient tonight, so you can't skip meals."
Jiang Ci spoke almost inaudibly, as if talking to herself, "Nobody likes to go hungry all the time. If you have money, why not buy yourself some food?"
Zhou Huai almost burst into tears. She pursed her lips tightly and mumbled, "Okay."
After she finished eating, Zhou Huaizhen went and bought herself two more cornbread buns. The pickled vegetables were all gone, so Jiang Ci packed up the portion that she had just given to her family.
"Go."
Zhou Huai quickly waved his hand, "Aunt Jiang, this is for you!"
"I appreciate your kindness," Jiang Ci said, refusing to accept the food. "We've already ordered some dishes, so please take them with you."
As soon as he finished speaking, Zhou Huai saw the steamed buns that Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli had ordered being served first.
The plump, white steamed buns look incredibly appetizing.
Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao shouted excitedly, "There's also meat!"
Waiter, "We'll bring it to you in a bit!"
Zhou Huai pursed his lips, took the pickled mustard tuber, and said, "Aunt Jiang, I'm leaving now."
"Go."
Zhou Huai left the state-run restaurant and glanced back.
Aunt Jiang and her husband sat around Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao, giving each of them half a steamed bun. When the meat and vegetables were served, the two children ate with bright eyes and full mouths.
Tears streamed down Zhou Huai's face. She quickly wiped her eyes, turned around, and ran rapidly toward the town hospital.
It's so great to be Aunt Jiang's child.
If only she were Aunt Jiang's child too.
If only Mom hadn't died, and Dad hadn't died.
...
This time they didn't order many items, but the portions were generous and filling. Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli were exhausted from riding their bicycles, and they finished off everything they ordered, leaving all the plates on the table empty.
After having a satisfying meal at the state-run restaurant, Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli went to a bookstore and bought pencils and some paper, intending to teach Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao how to write the pinyin they had learned before.
Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao weren't particularly enthusiastic about studying, but Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli taught them whenever they had free time. Children have the best memory, and they unconsciously memorized all the pronunciations of the pinyin, even though they had only ever drawn on the ground with a stick before and had never used a pen.
The two children, unaware of what they were about to face, ate and drank their fill. Zhou Yang sat on the small seat in front of the bicycle and fell asleep with his head tilted to the side. Zhou Miao did the same, being held in Jiang Ci's arms with her little hands on her shoulders, fast asleep.
Having missed the hottest two or three o'clock, Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli didn't get home until after five o'clock.
Tomorrow is the day to prepare for rice planting. There's not much work to do tonight, so Zhou Mingli plans to clean up the walls in his house before painting them.
Seeing this, Jiang Ci quickly went to the cowshed to deliver dinner, preparing to work with Zhou Mingli when she returned.
When she arrived, she found that Liu San had just returned from outside.
His expression was not good, and he looked angry.
Upon seeing Jiang Ci, Liu San's expression grew even more unpleasant.
Jiang Ci didn't say anything, she just opened the lunchbox as usual.
Today they even put potatoes and sliced meat in it.
Liu San's face darkened further as he snatched the lunchbox from Jiang Ci's hand. "Damn it, an old man is eating better than me!"
He quickly poured everything inside into his bowl, then filled it with disgusting sheep droppings.
When Jiang Ci saw it, her brows furrowed imperceptibly.
But she didn't say anything, silently took the lunchbox, and walked inside.
Liu San followed behind her, and Jiang Ci silently walked to the original spot.
"You old geezer, come out and eat!" Liu San shouted.
The door to the small house was tightly closed, and there was not a sound.
Liu San, cursing and swearing, barged in, dragged out the thin but remarkably lucid old man from the room, threw him forward, opened the lunchbox, and placed it in front of him, shouting, "Eat! Eat right now!"
How could an old man eat sheep droppings? He waved Liu San away, turned around, and walked back into the house.
