Chapter 10 You Are Right
Chen Xiangsong and Bai Xiaolian disappeared in front of the department store in a miserable state amid the pointing and laughter of the crowd.
Gu Qiuyue looked coldly in the direction where they disappeared, with no emotion on her face. She carefully put away the IOU that still had Chen Xiangsong's fingerprint on it, and took the heavy cloth package.
One thousand one hundred yuan...it was definitely an astronomical figure in that era, she calculated, leaving enough money to buy some necessities.
In this strange marriage between her and Gu Shiyu, she didn't want to use his money to avoid a lot of trouble later.
Thinking of Xie Shiyu's words, "I'll ask someone to transfer your grain and oil registration to the family compound, you don't have to go back", a strange feeling flashed through my heart. The old road leading to death was blocked.
…
"Where's the money?! Where's the five hundred yuan I asked you to send to Gu Qiuyue?! And the quota to return to the city, how much did you cheat me of?!" Chen Xiangsong's eyes were red, he grabbed Bai Xiaolian's collar and roared, the ultimatum of "one thousand and one a day" was like a guillotine hanging over his head.
Bai Xiaolian struggled and cried, "I sent it... I really did! It must have been... it must have been lost at the post office, or... or that bitch Gu Qiuyue took it for herself. The quota... the quota was her own choice."
"Bullshit!" Chen Xiangsong threw her to the ground with veins bulging on his forehead. "You swallowed the money and still fooled me!" He remembered Gu Qiuyue's words, "You are an idiot with no brains." At this moment, he felt a burning pain on his face, which was more painful than being slapped.
Chen Xiangsong fell into the chair and put his hands in his hair: "Money... one thousand and one a day... where are we going to get it?!" Despair was like a cold tide, instantly drowning out the anger.
The two men rummaged through boxes and drawers, and found dozens of cash bills, small deposit certificates, a half-worn Shanghai watch, and even some of Chen's mother's gold and silver jewelry that were hidden in the bottom of the box. However, they were still a long way from the huge sum of 1,100 yuan.
"Do you have any money left at home?" Chen Xiangsong pressed. "You still have half of this thousand and one li. Don't expect me to help you out."
Bai Xiaolian cried: "Brother Song, Brother Song, you know my family's situation. I have to hand over my monthly salary..."
The sky faded from light to darkness. Bai Xiaolian looked at the limp Chen Xiangsong with a flickering look in her eyes. A hint of resentment and desperate madness crept into her. She whispered coldly, "Brother Song... the IOU... is a death warrant. That bitch Gu Qiuyue is going too far... why not... just go all the way?"
Chen Xiangsong raised his head abruptly: "Murder is against the law!"
"No need to kill, the IOU is in her bag." Bai Xiaolian's eyes flashed with a murderous gleam. "Tomorrow we'll find someone to take advantage of the chaos and snatch her bag... Then we'll give her a good beating and send her back to the countryside!"
Chen Xiangsong shuddered, his entire body trembling. Gu Qiuyue's cold threat, "I'll go straight to your workplace and find your leader," was still ringing in his ears. Fear overwhelmed his rationality. His Adam's apple rolled a few times, and he squeezed out a muffled syllable from between his teeth: "...You...you decide what to do!"
…
As dusk fell, in a quiet alley near the department store, Gu Qiuyue leaned against a mottled brick wall, holding the strap of her shoulder bag, all her senses in a state of alert.
It was five minutes to six. Chen Xiangsong's face was pale, and he held a bulging old cloth bag tightly in his hand; Bai Xiaolian stood close to him, her eyes hesitant.
"Gu...Gu Qiuyue..." Chen Xiangsong's voice was dry and trembling. "Money...we tried our best, but we could only get 700 yuan...the rest...the rest, do you think you can give us some time?" He handed over the cloth bag.
Bai Xiaolian also forced a fake smile, her voice so sweet that it was sickening: "Sister Qiuyue, we sold everything we had to get this... We will definitely pay you back the rest on a monthly basis. We will sign a letter of guarantee." But the corner of her eye was scanning the shadows on both sides of the alley.
Gu Qiuyue didn't go to take the cloth bag. She just watched their performance coldly, a hint of knowing sarcasm hanging on the corner of her mouth. "Grace period? Letter of guarantee?" Her voice was not loud, but it stung like an ice spike. "Chen Xiangsong, I made it very clear. Tomorrow night at six o'clock, one thousand and one, not a cent less. So you want me to go to your company to get an advance on my salary?"
"No! Don't go!" Chen Xiangsong screamed in fear like a cat whose tail was stepped on, his body shaking.
A fierce light flashed in Bai Xiaolian's eyes, and she screamed: "Fight with her! Grab the IOU!" Before she finished speaking, she pounced on Gu Qiuyue like a mad dog, grabbing the bag on her chest with both hands with clear goals.
At the same time, two thugs hiding in the shadows rushed out, one pulling his arm and the other snatching his bag.
Gu Qiuyue was prepared and instantly turned sideways. Suddenly, there was a package in her hand (which she took out from the space) and she swung it with all her strength.
"Bang!" The package hit the gangster who was rushing in the front hard. The gangster screamed in pain, staggered backwards and knocked over his companion. Bai Xiaolian missed and couldn't stop in time, almost falling to the ground.
In the chaos, Gu Qiuyue did not retreat but advanced. She used her shoulder to hit the ribs of the gangster who had just climbed up. The gangster was caught off guard and felt a huge force coming. His ribs hurt so much that he was knocked to the ground again with a groan.
"Ah!" Bai Xiaolian screamed and rushed forward again, scratching Gu Qiuyue's face with her nails. Gu Qiuyue raised her hand to block. Bai Xiaolian's nails left several bloody marks on the back of her hand, which was burning with pain.
Gu Qiuyue's eyes sharpened, and she suddenly grabbed Bai Xiaolian's flailing wrist with her other hand, tightening her fingers suddenly.
"Ah! It hurts! Let go!" Bai Xiaolian felt that the bones in her wrist were about to be crushed. She struggled desperately but could not move at all.
The reversal of the situation completely crushed Chen Xiangsong's last thought of resistance. Looking at the helpers he had found who were like paper helpers and Bai Xiaolian screaming at Gu Qiuyue's hands, he knelt on the cold ground with a "thump".
"Stop hitting me! I'll give it to you! I'll give you the rest!" Chen Xiangsong kowtowed with tears streaming down his face. "Please don't go to my company. I'll write you an IOU and pay you back every month when I get my salary until I'm fully paid."
Gu Qiuyue shook off the screaming Bai Xiaolian and looked at Chen Xiangsong with icy eyes. "Why bother? Your parents are both working, right? Tomorrow morning at seven o'clock, at the same place, advance the money or ask your parents for the rest, and send it to us. We can write off all the grudges."
Bai Xiaolian covered her painful wrist and glared at Gu Qiuyue with resentment, but Gu Qiuyue didn't even bother to give her a glance. She wrote another IOU for 500 yuan and asked Chen Xiangsong and Bai Xiaolian to sign and put their fingerprints on it. "Why is there another hundred yuan?" Bai Xiaolian screamed.
"Mental damage compensation!" Gu Qiuyue kicked the two thugs who were whining on the ground and said coldly.
Bai Xiaolian wanted to argue, but Chen Xiangsong covered her mouth and said flatteringly, "You're right!"
Gu Qiuyue sneered, put away the seven hundred yuan in cash and the new IOU, turned around and walked into the twilight.
Just as they took seven or eight steps, Bai Xiaolian's hoarse and sinister voice, like poison, pierced the air: "Gu Qiuyue! Don't be so complacent! I, Bai Xiaolian, swear I will not be a human being until I have brought you to ruin and a life worse than death!"
The vicious curse spread but did not bring any pause to Gu Qiuyue. She just curled her lips into a cold mockery.
Her figure quickly blended into the street lights that were just coming on.
In the shadows behind him, a tall and straight figure in dark military uniform took in everything.
Xie Shiyu frowned slightly, his deep gaze fell on the direction where Gu Qiuyue disappeared, his fingertips unconsciously stroking the cuffs of his military uniform, as if thinking about something.
