Chapter 107: Abuse of power for personal gain
"Where were you when she was slandering me, framing me, trying to trample me into the mud? Did you ever say a single fair word for me? Now she's broken the law and is going to jail, and you're desperate? You come to me and beg me for mercy?" She sneered, a laugh devoid of warmth, only endless mockery and disappointment. "It's too late."
"Everything she's going through today is her own fault. The law will give her the most 'fair' judgment! As for you—" Gu Qiuyue picked up her books, her chin slightly raised, with the unique pride and righteousness of a Capital University student. "Remember, this is Capital University, a place for study and learning, not a place for you to run wild and tangle. If you dare to harass me for her again, I will call the police immediately. You'd better take care of yourself!"
After she finished speaking, she no longer looked at Chen Xiangsong's face, which had turned as pale as dust and lost its soul. She straightened her back, hugged the book, and returned to the campus like a proud green bamboo in the wind and snow. The sunlight shone through the gaps between the leaves and fell on her determined back, as if she had been coated with a layer of awe-inspiring and inviolable halo.
A few days later, the news that Bai Xiaolian was formally arrested by the police spread in her small circle, causing sighs and contempt.
Gu Qiuyue's campus life seemed to be back on track. She attended classes, studied on her own, and took classes in other departments. However, the wooden board temporarily nailed on the back window of Gu's house was like a shallow scar, reminding her of the horror of that night.
On a sunny weekend afternoon, Gu Qiuyue sat on a stone bench by the Weiming Lake, holding a few borrowed foreign journals, trying to digest those difficult mechanical principles. The warm sunlight sprinkled on her body, the lake was sparkling, and a few water birds were swimming leisurely, temporarily dispelling the haze in her heart.
"Yueyue."
A deep and familiar voice sounded behind him.
Gu Qiuyue's heart stirred slightly, and she turned around. Xie Shiyu was standing under the willow tree a few steps away. He was dressed in a fitted dark blue casual suit, his posture as straight as a pine tree. He seemed thinner than when he last left, but his eyes were more calm and reserved, and there was a subtle hint of solemnity and weathering between his brows. The sunlight fell on his shoulders, outlining the sharp line of his jaw.
"Shi Yu? Why are you here? Are you on home leave?" Gu Qiuyue stood up with a look of surprise on her face.
Xie Shiyu took a few steps closer, his gaze lingering on her face for a moment, as if to confirm her condition. Then he got straight to the point, his voice low but clear: "I'm back in Beijing this time to carry out a mission."
Gu Qiuyue's heart tightened slightly and she listened quietly.
"We have an important pair of foreign guests," Xie Shiyu said, his gaze sweeping across the tranquil lake. He confirmed their safety before continuing, "German mechanical engineering experts, Professor Schmidt and his wife, will be visiting China soon for academic exchanges." He paused, then looked at Gu Qiuyue with a businesslike focus. "An important part of their trip is visiting the relevant departments and laboratories at Jingcheng University."
Jingcheng University? Gu Qiuyue's eyes flashed with understanding. So that's it.
But he's here alone now...
"Our superiors attach great importance to this exchange, especially the safety of the foreign guests." Xie Shiyu's tone was full of military rigor. "I am responsible for the core security work during Professor Schmidt and his wife's visit to Peking University." His eyes fell on Gu Qiuyue, his deep eyes full of love. "Professor Schmidt and his wife just arrived in Beijing today and are now resting in the hotel. I heard that Bai Xiaolian came to bother you, so I took some time to come out and see you."
"Will you be punished for coming out like this?" Gu Qiuyue said with a worried look on her face. "Actually, Bai Xiaolian's matter is over. She has already received the punishment she deserved."
"It's okay," Xie Shiyu smiled. "I came here with Jianjun, Weidong and the others. Professor Schmidt and his wife need to adjust to the time difference in the hotel today, so it's okay for me to come out alone. Besides, I have a mission as well."
Gu Qiuyue was confused: "What?"
"Come to Beijing University for an inspection!" Seeing Gu Qiuyue's expression, Xie Shiyu couldn't help but reach out and touch her nose.
Gu Qiuyue blushed and accused: "You are using your power for personal gain!"
Then, she had an idea and subconsciously tightened the journal in her hand. Although she didn't study mechanics, these words naturally held a certain appeal. She raised her head and met Xie Shiyu's gaze: "Professor Schmidt? Mechanical engineering?" There was a subtle hint of inquiry in her tone.
Xie Shiyu nodded almost imperceptibly, acknowledging her keenness. "Yes. The specific itinerary is still being finalized." He then changed the subject, adding with a smile, "Comrade Gu Qiuyue, you're a Peking University student and are familiar with the environment here. If you were on campus, could you show me around?"
"Of course you can, but I have a big class in the afternoon, so you have to wait until I finish that class." Gu Qiuyue's serious words were accompanied by a smile.
"Okay, thank you for your help. I'll go to the library to read for a while, and then take me around the campus after you finish class." Xie Shiyu sent her to the Chinese Department and said with a smile.
Gu Qiuyue nodded and watched him blend into the crowd of students coming and going until he disappeared, then she turned and entered the classroom.
Walking into the large classroom, Gu Qiuyue sat down in her familiar seat. The professor's voice at the podium rose and fell, leading her into the ocean of knowledge. However, deep in the lake of her heart, it was as if a small stone had been thrown into it, causing imperceptible ripples to spread out.
Gu Qiuyue was rarely distracted. He was back. This thought brought a sense of solid warmth, dispelling the last trace of gloom left by the Bai Xiaolian incident. Xie Shiyu's tall figure, steady eyes, and the words "carry out the mission" with the conciseness and unquestionableness unique to soldiers were all clearly imprinted in her mind.
She forced herself to concentrate, quickly writing down the key points in her notes. Only when her pen occasionally paused, the willow branches outside the window seemed to carry the outline of that familiar figure.
The bell for the end of get out of class finally rang. Gu Qiuyue packed up her books and stationery, walked out of the teaching building with brisk steps, and subconsciously searched among the crowd of people. Without any effort, she saw Xie Shiyu standing under the sycamore tree at the entrance of the library.
His upright figure was particularly conspicuous among the crowd of students holding books and dressed simply, yet he strangely blended into the atmosphere of this academic hall. The golden glow of the setting sun cast a soft edge of light on him. He was slightly looking up at the ancient plaque of the library, and the lines of his profile appeared particularly tough and focused in the light and shadow.
Gu Qiuyue walked over quickly, and the sound of her footsteps made him turn his head. When their eyes met, the silence in his deep eyes instantly melted away, and a gentle smile that was only for her appeared on his face, which was not concealed.
"Thank you, Captain. Sorry for the wait." Gu Qiuyue walked up to him and stood still, her face deliberately stern, but the smile in her eyes betrayed her true emotions. "Can your campus patrol mission begin now?"
