Chapter 152: Couple's Night Talk

Chapter 152: Couple's Night Talk

The sound of the courtyard door being gently pushed open was particularly clear in the silent night. Gu Qiuyue quickly sat back at the desk, turned on the desk lamp, picked up a pen and pretended to write on the manuscript paper, but her fingertips trembled slightly.

Xie Shiyu pushed the door open and walked into the room. The collar of his military uniform was slightly open, and there was an unconcealable fatigue between his brows. However, when he saw his wife writing under the lamp, his eyes softened instantly.

"Are the children asleep? Why haven't you rested yet?" His voice was low and gentle, no different from usual.

Gu Qiuyue put down her pen and turned to look at him. Xie Shiyu looked more tired than when he left the house in the morning, but his expression was much more relaxed than before.

She stood up and walked to the kitchen. "I just had some inspiration, so I got up and wrote for a while. Are you hungry? Do you want me to make you a bowl of noodles?"

"No need..." Before Xie Shiyu could finish his words, Gu Qiuyue had already entered the kitchen and said in a brisk voice, "I'm a little hungry too."

After hearing what she said, Xie Shiyu no longer objected. Instead, he took off his military uniform, rolled up his sleeves, and went into the kitchen. "You go out, I'll do it."

"Then help me wash some green vegetables." Gu Qiuyue did not drive her husband out, but ordered him to do the work naturally.

The two of them cooked a small pot of noodles in the kitchen, blanched some green vegetables, and laid two eggs in it.

Xie Shiyu carried the small pot out of the kitchen, and Gu Qiuyue went out with the bowl and chopsticks. The heat spread between the two of them. When Xie Shiyu took the bowl, his fingertips accidentally brushed against her hand, which was warm and rough.

"What was that just now..." Someone served a bowl of noodles and placed it in front of the two of them. Gu Qiuyue couldn't help but asked softly.

Xie Shiyu slurped a mouthful of noodles and sighed, "It's a comrade from above, he knows something about the situation."

He paused, as if weighing his words. "This isn't a routine exercise. It involves border reconnaissance and emergency plan simulations. The level of confidentiality is high, so I couldn't go into detail before. I'm sorry to have worried you."

His explanation was concise but sincere, and Gu Qiuyue finally felt relieved. She knew the nature of her husband's work and there were some things she really couldn't ask too much about.

"I know the rules. I just hope you come back safely." She said softly, her tone full of understanding.

Xie Shiyu's gaze fell on the manuscript paper on the desk, and his eyes showed admiration: "Well written, Qiuyue, your talent should not be buried." There seemed to be other meanings hidden in his words, but before Gu Qiuyue could think about it, the phone suddenly rang.

The ringing of a phone late at night always makes people nervous. Gu Qiuyue quickly walked over to answer the phone and heard her mother's familiar voice coming from the other end of the receiver.

"Qiuyue, did I wake you and the kids?" Mother Gu's voice was filled with concern. After a simple greeting, she changed the subject and said, "How are you thinking about what I told you last time? The postgraduate entrance exam for next year has already started recruiting, and your father and I both think you should try."

Gu Qiuyue held the receiver and subconsciously glanced at Xie Shiyu. This was not the first time her mother had mentioned this matter, but she still couldn't make up her mind.

"Mom, I know you are doing this for my own good. But Huahua and Shuangshuang are still young, and Shiyu is busy with work. What will happen to the family if I go to school? Besides, I have a good job now and can even write something..." Her voice became lower and lower, and her inner struggle was obvious.

Mother Gu on the other end of the phone refused to give up. "You, child, you think too much. Shi Yu may be busy, but don't we still have you? If you're worried about the child, I can go over and help take care of him for a while, or you can bring the child to Beijing. You don't know that Professor Zhu comes to our house almost every day to persuade us. Besides, your father and I think it would be a pity for you not to continue your studies since you are still young. You see, the policies are good now, and so many people are looking forward to such an opportunity..."

Gu Qiuyue listened to her mother's advice, her fingers unconsciously tangled around the phone cord. Didn't she want to continue studying? When she graduated from university, the professor had intended to give her a place in graduate school, but she gave up because she thought it wouldn't be a good idea to live apart from her husband for a while. Professor Zhu felt sorry for her for a long time.

"Mom, I'll think about this again. You should go to bed early." Gu Qiuyue advised softly, but doubts arose in her heart. Her mother usually paid great attention to her daily routine and would never call so late.

Gu's mother on the other end of the phone seemed to sense her daughter's doubts and lowered her voice, "Actually, your Professor Zhu came to see me today specifically to say that the enrollment quota is limited and asked you to make a decision within the next few days. He's worried that you'll miss the registration deadline, so he's really anxious..."

So that's how it is. A warm feeling welled up in Gu Qiuyue's heart. Professor Zhu still cared about her so much.

After hanging up the phone, Gu Qiuyue stood there in a daze, her heart in turmoil. Xie Shiyu walked to her and gently held her shoulders with his warm hands.

"Mom is advising you to take the postgraduate entrance exam again?" he asked softly, without any displeasure in his tone.

Gu Qiuyue nodded and told Xie Shiyu about Professor Zhu's anxiety and her mother's worries. Xie Shiyu listened quietly, his eyes becoming more gentle.

Finally, Gu Qiuyue sighed: "He thinks it's a waste of my talent to stay here, but..."

Xie Shiyu did not respond immediately. Instead, he walked to the briefcase, took out a small package and handed it to his wife. Gu Qiuyue opened it puzzledly, and saw several brand new literary journals in front of her. Her name was prominently marked on the table of contents of the top one - her first novel "When the Wind Rises" was published.

"This is..." Gu Qiuyue flipped through the journal in surprise, her fingers gently stroking the page with her name printed, tears of excitement welling up in her eyes.

Xie Shiyu looked at her with a firm yet gentle gaze: "Qiuyue, look, your work has been seen by so many people. Mom is right, you should have a broader world. Don't worry about the family matters. I will coordinate it. If it really doesn't work out, let Huahua and Shuangshuang go to Beijing with you. My parents can also help take care of them."

After a pause, he continued, "Besides, the educational resources in Beijing are the best in the country, which will also be beneficial to the future of Huahua and Shuangshuang."

"Besides, the situation may change recently. Learning more is not a bad thing, either for yourself or for your future."

Gu Qiuyue raised her head and looked into her husband's deep eyes. The implication in his words moved her heart, but she was more moved by the support and understanding. She looked down at the journal in her hand, and thought of her mother's words. The hesitation in her eyes was gradually replaced by a firm light.

The moonlight outside the window is like water, and the lights inside are warm. On this ordinary night, an important decision is quietly taking shape.

The unspoken meaning in Xie Shiyu's words was like a stone thrown into a calm lake, creating ripples in her heart. No one could predict what the future would hold, but at least at this moment, she felt unprecedented power and possibility.
