Chapter 156 False Alarm
The staff member's words were like a drop of cold water on Gu Qiuyue's fiery heart. She tightened her fingers slightly, but remained calm. "Comrade, what's the problem? This is the certificate my wife just got from work yesterday."
The staff member surnamed Zhang pushed up his glasses and pointed at the edge of the official seal. "Comrade Gu, look at this seal. The font weight of the unit name is slightly different from the recent filing records, and the ink color also looks too fresh. According to regulations, we need to verify it."
Gu Qiuyue's heart sank. She remembered Xie Shiyu's determined look when he handed her the folder last night. She gathered her composure and said, "Comrade Zhang, my wife is an officer in the military district. This certificate was issued directly by the Political Department. It's absolutely authentic. The director even encouraged military families to take the postgraduate entrance exam, saying it's a good thing."
Comrade Zhang's expression softened slightly, but his tone remained businesslike. "I understand and believe in the awareness of military families, but the recruitment process must be rigorous. Any questionable materials need to be verified. You can contact the issuing unit for confirmation, or we can send a letter for verification. However, the latter takes time, and I'm afraid it won't meet the early deadline."
Gu Qiuyue glanced at the wall clock, the hands moving relentlessly towards three in the afternoon. She took a deep breath. Xie Shiyu was in an important meeting and couldn't call. Could it be that the problem was due to this official seal?
"Can I borrow the phone?" Gu Qiuyue asked, with a barely perceptible anxiety in her voice.
After getting permission, she dialed the number of the military region's political department, but there was a long "beep-beep" tone in the receiver, and no one answered. She dialed the number twice in a row, and the result was the same.
Sweat quietly soaked her back. Comrade Zhang looked at her sympathetically and said, "Comrade Gu, I'll give you another half an hour, but we must complete all the reviews before four o'clock."
Just when she was almost in despair, Gu Qiuyue suddenly remembered what Xie Shiyu had said when he handed her the folder this morning: "Everything you might need is in there."
She hurriedly flipped open the inside of the folder and found an inconspicuous inner pocket, which neatly contained a copy of Xie Shiyu's work ID and a piece of paper with several phone numbers written on it.
Next to the last number, there was a note in strong handwriting: "Direct line to Director Li of the Political Department."
Gu Qiuyue's fingers trembled slightly as she picked up the phone and dialed the number again. After only two rings, a young and capable voice came from the other end: "Hello, this is Director Li's office."
Gu Qiuyue briefly explained the situation, and the other party immediately took it seriously: "Please wait a moment, I will report to the director immediately."
Within two minutes, a calm, middle-aged male voice appeared on the other end of the line: "Comrade Xiao Gu, right? Shi Yu mentioned your postgraduate entrance exam to me. Don't worry, I'll have the person in charge contact the admissions office immediately to verify."
Less than five minutes after hanging up, another phone rang in the Admissions Office. Zhang picked up the line and nodded as he listened to the clear explanation on the other end. "Okay, I understand...it's confirmed to be issued today...no problem, thank you for your cooperation."
Zhang put down the phone and smiled. "Comrade Gu, we've verified it. We were too cautious. The military district uses a newly engraved filing stamp, and our filing information was updated a few days late. There's nothing wrong with your materials."
Gu Qiuyue breathed a sigh of relief, and a smile returned to her face: "It's right. It's right to be cautious. Thank you for being so responsible."
Comrade Zhang stamped the application form with a red "Approved" stamp while flipping through her materials. When he saw the "Research Proposal," he paused for a moment, his eyes flashing with admiration. "Comrade Gu, your research perspective on the impact of rural labor migration on military families is very novel. Professor Liu Jianbang of our school's Economics Department is also conducting research in a related field. Perhaps you two can find common ground."
Gu Qiuyue's heart moved, and she wrote down the name "Liu Jianbang": "Thank you for reminding me, I will pay attention to Professor Liu's works."
After completing all the formalities, Gu Qiuyue walked out of the admissions office with a lighter step, holding the thin but heavy registration certificate.
She thought of the phone number Xie Shiyu had silently prepared, and a warm feeling surged in her heart.
Seeing that it was still early, Gu Qiuyue decided to go to the city library. Since she had successfully registered, she had to be fully prepared.
The library was quiet. Gu Qiuyue searched the economics section carefully and found several books signed by "Liu Jianbang." She pulled out "Evolution of China's Rural Economic Structure" and leaned against the bookshelf to read.
The book's viewpoints are novel and profound, and the data are detailed. Many of the insights coincide with hers, but are even more profound. She was so engrossed in reading it that she immersed herself in it unconsciously.
"Comrade, are you also interested in the rural economic structure?" A gentle voice came from behind.
Gu Qiuyue turned around and saw a middle-aged man wearing glasses and with a strong scholarly demeanor looking at her friendly. He was holding several books in his hands, and the title of the top book was about labor transfer research.
Gu Qiuyue's heartbeat quickened as a guess surfaced. She smiled and nodded, "Yes, Professor Liu Jianbang's writing on the impact of rural labor migration on family structure is particularly brilliant."
The man's eyes lit up, and he looked a little surprised: "Have you read my book?"
"Are you Professor Liu? Aren't you from Jingcheng University?" Gu Qiuyue asked in surprise. "I just read your book 'The Transformation of China's Rural Economic Structure' and was very inspired by the ideas in it. I'm also working on related research."
Professor Liu seemed very interested: "Oh, I came to see an old friend. Which unit are you from?"
Gu Qiuyue briefly introduced her situation and research direction, and especially mentioned the innovative point of taking the special characteristics of military families into consideration.
Professor Liu nodded repeatedly. "That's a very valuable perspective, but unfortunately I have a seminar to attend right now." He checked his watch and said, "How about this? I'm giving a special lecture at the Provincial Economics Institute next Wednesday afternoon. If you're interested, you can come and listen."
As he spoke, he tore off a page from the notebook he carried with him and wrote down the time and place with a pen: "Take this and say it's my invitation when you register at the door."
Gu Qiuyue carefully took the note, as if she had found a treasure: "Thank you, Professor Liu, I will definitely attend on time."
Looking at Professor Liu's hurriedly leaving back, Gu Qiuyue held the note in her hand, feeling excited. She had not expected that a small incident during the registration process would actually open another door for her.
On the way home, Gu Qiuyue's steps were particularly brisk. Not only did she successfully register, but she might also have met an academic master. She was already looking forward to the upcoming postgraduate entrance examination journey.
When I walked to the gate of the family compound, I saw Xie Shiyu leaning against the guard post from afar. The setting sun gave his figure a golden edge, making him stand tall and straight like a pine tree.
