Chapter 37 Brother is Back
Xie Shiyu suddenly raised his head. His deep eyes were no longer tired, only filled with a cold, almost tangible rage. He didn't slam the table, but simply stood up slowly. His tall figure instantly brought a sense of oppression, and the air in the office seemed to freeze.
Mother Zhou was frightened by his sudden, thunderous anger. The rest of her words got stuck in her throat and she involuntarily took a half step back.
"Who gave you the courage?" Xie Shiyu's voice was terribly low, and each word was clearly struck by Zhou's mother's heart. "Run to the important military camp, run to me, to insult my wife and her parents?"
Mother Zhou's face turned pale: "I..."
"I know my wife a thousand times better than you do!" Xie Shiyu didn't give her a chance to explain. His eyes were as sharp as a knife, piercing straight at her. "She is kind, sensible, and considerate of the overall situation. She would never, and would not, do the despicable things you mentioned. But you and your daughter Zhou Lihua—"
He snorted coldly, his contempt undisguised. "You maliciously provoked my wife and slandered her family. I forgave my colleagues and kept silent, giving her a last shred of dignity. I never expected you to go even further, stirring up trouble and distorting right and wrong, instigating you to come to me and act recklessly."
"Who gave you the courage?!" The last sentence was like a thunderclap, full of the violent rage of a soldier who was offended and the unquestionable will of a husband to protect.
Zhou's mother was completely frightened by his overwhelming momentum and merciless rebuke. Her whole body began to tremble like a sieve, her face turned red and white, her lips trembled, and she couldn't utter a word.
The word "act wild" was like a slap in her face. The cold warning in Xie Shiyu's eyes left her no doubt that if she said one more word, he would definitely do what he said and make her even more embarrassed.
"Get out!" Xie Shiyu raised his hand and pointed at the door, his gesture as resolute as a soldier issuing an order. "If you dare harass my wife again, whether in public or private, I, Xie Shiyu, will pursue you to the end. Now, leave my office immediately."
The last bit of courage that Zhou's mother had held on to was completely crushed. She almost staggered out of the office door, not even daring to turn her head back. Her carefully combed hair was scattered and stuck to her sweaty forehead.
The night gently enveloped the small courtyard. Gu Qiuyue hummed a discordant tune and tidied the house with brisk steps. Her face was filled with the brightest and most relaxed smile in days. A few freshly picked wild flowers were placed in the enamel jar on the windowsill, reflecting the light and looking full of vitality.
The sound of a key turning in the door lock was heard, and Xie Shiyu pushed the door open and walked in. There was still a trace of coldness between his brows, but when he saw his wife's soft and joyful profile under the light, the coldness instantly melted like ice and snow.
"So happy?" He took off his military jacket and hung it up casually. He walked up behind her, put his arms around her waist naturally, and rested his chin on the top of her head. His voice was slightly hoarse, "Did you find some money?"
Gu Qiuyue turned around in his arms with a smile, her eyes shining brightly. She held up the letter that she had been holding in her hand in front of him as if she was presenting a treasure: "Look! It's a letter from Grandpa Tang, brother! There's news about brother. It turns out he wasn't missing, but went on a mission. Now that the mission is completed, he will be able to return to the team soon." The great joy made her voice tremble with excitement.
The smile in Xie Shiyu's eyes widened instantly, like the surface of a lake where a stone was thrown, and sincere ripples appeared: "Really?! That's great, Qiuyue!" He tightened his arms and hugged her tightly, sharing this belated and great comfort. He could clearly feel the almost overflowing happiness of his wife in his arms, and the tense heartstrings of the past few days finally relaxed.
The torrent of joy subsided a little, and Gu Qiuyue leaned against his solid chest lovingly, listening to his steady heartbeat.
At this moment, Xie Shiyu's low voice, with a hint of elusive depth, gently brushed past her ear: "Qiuyue...Did Mr. Tang's letter say that Qiuhan asked him to bring me any...special words?"
Something special? For him?
Gu Qiuyue's heart, surging with ecstasy, felt as if a small stone had been dropped into it, sending ripples of doubt. She lifted her head slightly from his embrace, her bright eyes reflecting the light and his deep, inscrutable expression. She asked softly, "Grandpa Tang only said that my brother is safe and will be returning to the team soon. Did he say anything special? Shi Yu, do you... know anything?"
Xie Shiyu's arm around her seemed to tighten slightly, and then a soothing arc appeared on the corner of his lips. However, he did not answer immediately. Instead, he pressed her back into his arms more gently, and gently rubbed his chin against the top of her head. His low voice carried a barely perceptible sigh: "Just come back safely."
The moonlight outside the window was like water, gently flowing over the window lattice. Gu Qiuyue leaned in her husband's warm and broad arms, her heart and eyes still filled with great joy for her brother's imminent return. However, Xie Shiyu's abrupt and meaningful question made her full of doubts.
What is the connection between my brother's mission and Shi Yu? What kind of past is hidden in those unspoken "special words"?
The days passed in Gu Qiuyue's anticipation. These days, she went to the mail room almost every day to see if there were any letters or telegrams for her. If Brother Xing wanted to see her, he should send her a letter or telegram first.
That day, when Xie Shiyu returned home, he saw Gu Qiuyue holding a piece of paper and smiling foolishly.
"What's wrong?" Xie Shiyu strode over.
"It's my brother. He's on his way." Gu Qiuyue handed the telegram in her hand to Xie Shiyu.
The early morning sun filled the courtyard. Gu Qiuyue was dressing in front of the mirror, unable to hide her nervousness and anticipation. The telegram said that her brother would arrive this morning.
"Don't be nervous," Xie Shiyu's calm voice came. He had already straightened his military uniform and put his big hand over her slightly cold hand. "It's more important than anything else for Big Brother to see you safe and happy."
Gu Qiuyue took a deep breath: "Yeah."
Xie Shiyu checked with his division commander and borrowed a car to pick up Gu Qiuhan at the train station. After waiting for a while at Yan Station, they saw a figure as tall and straight as a pine tree stride out. His brand-new Northwest Military Region uniform highlighted his broad shoulders and long legs, and his gait was sharp. His weathered, angular face bore a resemblance to Gu Qiuyue's, but his bright, almond-shaped eyes were exactly the same as hers.
"Qiu Han!" Xie Shiyu waved his hand.
Gu Qiuhan looked over with a smile in his eyes, and walked quickly towards Xie Shiyu. But when he got close, he suddenly stopped, and the luggage in his hands fell to the ground. His almond-shaped eyes stared at Gu Qiuyue without blinking, and after a long while, he said, "Yueyue?!"
"Brother...Brother..." Gu Qiuyue's voice broke out of her throat tremblingly. She had never seen Gu Qiuhan before, but all her emotions were so natural, as if this person was her brother.
"Yueyue!" Gu Qiuhan's voice was hoarse, as if rubbed with sandpaper, filled with the cautiousness of regaining what he had lost and the endless fear of the aftermath. His rough fingers clumsily yet gently wiped the tears from his sister's face, whispering over and over again, like the most solemn promise: "Brother is back...Brother is back, don't cry anymore, ok?"
