Chapter 7 Finding Things at the Scrap Yard
After leaving the Zhou family's house, Jiang Feiyan decided to go to the nearby scrap yard.
Beijing is the capital of China, so its scrap yards must have plenty of good stuff.
She was planning to try and find some bargains, hoping to make a pleasant surprise.
Even if someone who has been terrified of poverty suddenly becomes rich, they will still be petty and narrow-minded.
Jiang Feiyan had this kind of mentality.
No one would complain about having too much money.
Moreover, she didn't have much money in this era.
At the entrance of the scrap yard, there are large-character posters on the wall next to it.
It reads: "We will not be lackeys of capitalism, and we will sweep away all monsters and demons!"
An elderly woman who works as a gatekeeper is bending down to sew shoe soles.
Seeing Jiang Feiyan approach, she glanced up and said, "Go inside and find what you need. Don't take anything you shouldn't. I'm going to check."
"Okay." Jiang Feiyan smiled sweetly and took out a few hard candies from her pocket and handed them over.
"Sister, this is my first time here. I'd like to find more study materials. How long can I stay inside?"
Seeing that Jiang Feiyan was so cooperative, the older woman happily accepted the candy, her voice softening as she said:
"Normally you are only allowed to stay inside for one hour, but since you are here to study, you can stay a little longer."
As for how long this "short time" would be, she didn't give a specific answer, but it was definitely longer than others.
Jiang Feiyan naturally understood the meaning behind her words and quickly thanked her, "Oh, okay, thank you, sister."
This scrap yard has three large warehouses, and they contain quite a lot of things.
Jiang Feiyan rolled up her sleeves and started searching from the first warehouse on the left.
Treasure hunting at junkyards is a standard feature of female protagonists in period novels. Although she is not the female protagonist and may not have such good luck, picking up some bargains is still not bad.
However, it was already 1973, and some of the good things had probably been secretly hidden away, so she didn't have much hope.
The first warehouse mainly collected some broken furniture and the like.
Jiang Feiyan had read many period novels, so she naturally knew how to find things the fastest.
She crouched down and tapped on each table and cabinet leg. When she heard that some of them were hollow, she immediately pried them open with a knife to check.
She searched several places without success, and her legs were almost numb from squatting, when she finally found one.
It's an emerald necklace! She'd seen it on TV before!
Perhaps it had been sitting in the table leg for a long time, as it was covered with a layer of dust.
Jiang Feiyan suppressed her excitement and carefully wiped her face with her sleeve.
Under the sunlight, the emerald radiated a rich, deep light, looking absolutely dazzling.
Fearing that someone might see it, Jiang Feiyan immediately put the necklace into her spatial storage.
Although taking something without asking is theft, this item is currently ownerless, so she naturally had to keep it after seeing it.
Otherwise, if it were left here, it would either be destroyed or abandoned, which would be such a pity.
Next, Jiang Feiyan searched the furniture warehouse but found nothing else.
As she was about to go to the central warehouse, she suddenly caught a glimpse of a piece of furniture in the corner, revealing a light yellow table corner.
Jiang Feiyan quickly stepped forward and gently removed the tattered wood covering it.
The light yellow furniture was finally revealed.
Jiang Feiyan was somewhat surprised. Could this color and luster be golden nanmu wood?!
Footsteps sounded outside the door. Jiang Feiyan's eyes flashed, and she immediately put the dressing table into her spatial storage.
Never mind, it's all in the junkyard anyway, might as well take it.
A few students walked in from outside; they seemed to be looking for something too.
Jiang Feiyan calmly went to the middle warehouse.
This warehouse mainly stores books, calligraphy and paintings, and textbooks; there are scraps of paper scattered all over the floor.
Her top-tier shopping mall also has a library, which has all kinds of study materials and textbooks.
Besides, the original owner had just graduated from high school, and all the school textbooks were still in good condition.
But just to put on a show, Jiang Feiyan symbolically selected a few study materials, and then began to frantically search for other valuable things.
However, this time the harvest was a bit small; she didn't see any of the ancient paintings from the Republic of China era that were found in the historical texts.
Calligraphy and paintings are not easy to preserve; they are not only prone to decay but also oxidation. I guess the better ones have already been picked over.
Jiang Feiyan found many famous novels and poetry collections in the corner. Knowing that these things would be burned in the future, she took the opportunity to put them into her space.
Although these things are not very valuable, they represent the hard work and dedication of scholars and literati.
She plans to donate the money when things get better, as a way of making a contribution.
Next, she went to the third warehouse.
This place is piled up with all sorts of odds and ends; there's a huge variety of things here.
Scrap metal, various porcelain and pottery jars, tattered clothes, and so on.
Having a treasure chest library is great; I can quickly find and identify many things I don't recognize by simply using my mind.
Jiang Feiyan found several vases and porcelain pieces that were worth collecting.
Even more amazing, she found several small boxes inside an iron kettle, filled with precious medicinal herbs.
Fortunately, she found it; otherwise, under these storage conditions, the medicinal herbs would have lost their effectiveness in another year or two.
Jiang Feiyan immediately placed the medicinal herbs in the hospital's designated storage area for medicinal herbs.
After browsing around carefully and finding nothing of value, Jiang Feiyan reluctantly left.
The few study materials I took only cost 20 cents, and the older woman let me pass with a smile.
It was almost noon by then, and instead of going home, Jiang Feiyan found a secluded spot and went directly into her spatial dimension.
Inside the room, she prepared another delicious lunch.
Stir-fried shrimp with scallions, minced meat and eggs, white rice, and a glass of iced cola.
A delicious and satisfying meal, perfect!
After finishing her meal, Jiang Feiyan rested in the space for a while before leaving and taking a bus to another recycling station.
Since it's out, let's go find some more.
There are scrap yards in all four directions of Beijing. The one she went to before was in the west, and now she's going to the scrap yard in the south.
The gatekeeper this time was an old man with a stern face, looking like someone owed him money; he didn't seem like someone to talk to.
Jiang Feiyan didn't give him any hard candy and went inside to find something properly.
This southern scrap yard is larger than the one in the west, with four large warehouses and more items.
Having learned from her previous experience, Jiang Feiyan was no longer afraid and immediately put any good items she saw into her spatial storage.
This time I had quite a haul. I dug out several gemstone rings and necklaces from the empty table leg, and even a few small yellow croakers!
There are also several valuable pieces of furniture, made of Phoebe zhennan, Hainan rosewood, and sandalwood.
Several valuable paintings and calligraphies were also found, all of which had been piled up in a corner and covered in dust.
Then there are the vases and porcelain pieces, which I've also collected quite a few of.
This trip was incredibly rewarding!
When Jiang Feiyan returned, her mouth was practically splitting open with a smile.
Taobao for old-fashioned scrap metal sites – it really lives up to its reputation!
