Chapter 13 Specialties

Da Wa's eyes darted left and right, but he didn't look at Chen Lie.

Chen Lie snorted and patted his little butt, "Go ahead, don't eat all the lard residue by yourself, share some with your younger brothers and sisters."

The eldest son ran out with the bowl in his arms, and only responded after he ran out of the kitchen.

What Chen Lie said to Da Wa was not a lie. In order to welcome Ning Tang, he actually prepared a table of delicious food.

So when Ning Tang was eating, he saw four dishes and one soup, including stir-fried pork, sweet and sour fish, ginger and scallion duck, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, and a pot of fish ball soup.

Ning Tang took a bowl of soup and handed it to Chen Lie, "Did you get your salary today?"

Chen Lie took the bowl of soup and said, "No, we get paid on the 8th of every month. Today is the 15th, so it's still early for payday."

"Then cook so many dishes." Ning Tang said.

Chen Lie didn't feel comfortable saying it was to welcome her, so he just laughed it off and said, "I was in a good mood, so I did a little more."

Ning Tang was happy, "Then I hope you will be in such a good mood every day."

It’s no wonder that Chen Lie, a grown man, is a pretty good cook. Every dish he makes is delicious and tasty.

Could it be that Shen Lie was the one who cooked for the Shen family before?

Ning Tang took a bite of the ginger and scallion duck and asked him tentatively, "Did you always cook for your family in the past?"

Chen Lie glanced at her and said, "Dawa's mother is in poor health, so I used to do most of the housework."

No wonder, Ning Tang saw that Chen Lie looked very skilled in everything he did.

After a few days, Ning Tang and Chen Lie got used to this distribution pattern.

Ning Tang cooks lunch and washes the dishes. In the evening, Chen Lie comes back to cook and wash the dishes. They even wash their clothes separately. Ning Tang washes her own, and Chen Lie washes his and the three children's clothes.

Two days later, Ning Tang finished her meal and was about to take a nap when she heard someone calling her outside, "Xiao Ning, are you home?"

Ning Tang stayed at home for a few days, taking care of her three children every day, or going to the vegetable market to deal with fishermen and vegetable vendors. For a moment, she really couldn't figure out who was calling her.

It didn't sound like Ning Xue's voice, and Ning Xue wouldn't call her Xiao Ning.

Ning Tang trotted out of the house, opened the gate, and saw Mrs. Luo's friendly smiling face.

Mrs. Luo was still wearing the same blue and white checkered cotton twill top she had worn that day on the beach, and she was carrying a small basket. "I was taking a walk here, so I came to see you. How are you? Are you settling in here?"

"Very good." Ning Tang wanted to welcome Sister Luo into the house, "Sister Luo, come in and talk."

Mrs. Luo waved her hand and declined politely, "I have something to do later, so I won't go in." She handed the small basket on her arm to Ning Tang, "These are the vegetables I grew myself. There aren't many, but I'll give them to you to add some flavor."

"Sister Luo!" The voices of Da Wa, Er Niu and San Wa suddenly came from behind Ning Tang.

The three children walked past Ning Tang and circled around Sister Luo, chattering in unison, "Sister Luo, why didn't you come to see us these days?" "That's right, we missed you so much, Sister Luo."

Mrs. Luo was surrounded by the three children, her mouth wide open with smiles. She patted the heads of the three children one by one, took out a bag of candy from her pocket and gave it to the three children, "Go over to the side and share the candy. I'll talk to your mother."

The eldest child took the candy and shook his head, "It's not mom, it's stepmother."

Mrs. Luo was stunned and looked at Ning Tang.

Ning Tang waved his hand, "It's okay, I told them to call me that."

Mrs. Luo didn't ask any more questions and changed the subject. "When Chen Lie went to your village, there was no one at home, so I helped take care of Da Wa and the others for a few days, so the children are closer to me."

So that's how it is. When Chen Lie asked the guard to deliver the meal, Ning Tang was thinking that the guard left after delivering the meal. Chen Lie was so generous that he left the three children alone at home. It turned out that he asked their political commissar's wife, Mrs. Luo, to take care of them. This made sense.

"Let's not talk about this anymore." Mrs. Luo stuffed the basket into Ning Tang's hands, "Here."

Ning Tang didn't bother to be polite with Sister Luo and took the basket. "Then I'll give it my preference."

Mrs. Luo showed a satisfied smile on her face and pointed to a two-story building not far away. "That's where I live. Come find me if you have any problems."

Ning Tang looked in the direction of her finger at Mrs. Luo's house, which was only four or five two-story buildings away from the Shen family. The two houses were very close, just a few steps away.

It seems that what Mrs. Luo said about taking a walk to her place and bringing her some food were all excuses. She came to see her specifically.

Mrs. Luo achieved her goal and prepared to leave. She waved to Da Wa, Er Niu, and San Wa and said, "Sister-in-law, I'm leaving."

The three little kids had candies in their mouths, stuffing them full. "Goodbye, sister-in-law."

Ning Tang stopped Sister Luo and said, "Sister-in-law, wait for me."

Mrs. Luo didn't know why Ning Tang stopped her, but she still waited as she was told.

Ning Tang went into the house and searched for a while, then took out a bag of red dates. "Sister-in-law, this is a specialty I brought from the northwest. Take it home and eat it."

Mrs. Luo looked down at the red dates. The red dates Ning Tang gave her were all dried red dates, and the quantity was quite large, probably around two kilograms.

Red dates are very precious, selling for 70 or 80 cents per pound, and they are in short supply on Hailang Island.

Hailang Island has no shortage of seafood, but it lacks dry goods from inland areas.

She quickly declined, "No, this thing is too expensive."

Ning Tang stuffed the red dates into Luo Saozi's hands and said, "They're not expensive at all. When I first arrived, you gave me a bag of barnacles, and then a basket of vegetables. You're still the one who lost out."

Not to mention the matter of giving her food, just because Mrs. Luo has taken care of the three children for several days, this bag of red dates should be given to her.

Mrs. Luo waved her hands repeatedly, "You say that? Barnacles can be found everywhere on the reef. The vegetables are grown by me, so they are not worth much."

Ning Tang gave the red dates to Sister Luo and crossed his arms, "Sister-in-law, if you're polite to me, I won't accept this basket of vegetables."

Mrs. Luo also saw that Ning Tang really wanted to give her the red dates. After thinking for a while, she said, "Okay, then don't be polite to me in the future. If you want to eat any vegetables, come to my yard and pick them."

Seeing that Mrs. Luo accepted it, Ning Tang said with a smile, "That's right, take the red dates back. They're great whether you use them to make soup or eat them dry."

These red dates are grown in the Ning family's yard. Every year when the red dates are ripe, Ning Weiguo will take Ning Weidang and Ning De to pick the red dates, and then Sun Aiju and Zhou Yin will dry the red dates.

This time when they came to Hailang Island, Sun Aiju forced Ning Tang to stuff several big bags.

Ning Tang and Mrs. Luo stood at the gate of the yard and talked for a while about how to eat red dates. Only then did Mrs. Luo leave excitedly with the red dates in her pocket.

Ning Tang watched Mrs. Luo go away before closing the door.

She didn't know that as soon as the gate was closed, a pair of eyes fell on the door.
