Chapter 78 The Last Meeting

At midnight, Ye Xuanhan fell asleep with his head resting on Jiang Wang's hand.

At this moment, there was a slight knock on the door.

As the deputy company commander of the reconnaissance company, Jiang Wang has always been very alert. He opened his eyes immediately when he heard the sound.

It was pitch black all around. After three or four seconds, there were three knocks on the door.

At this time, Ye Xinhan also woke up slowly. Her sleep became lighter after she became pregnant, so she woke up quickly when she heard the sound.

"There's someone knocking on the door," Jiang Wang said, "You stay here, I'll go open the door."

It was the middle of the night and no one knew who would come to someone else's house. Jiang Wang was worried, so he put on his clothes and went outside to open the door.

Ye Hanhan got dressed and came out, lighting the candles in the house, and saw Jiang Wang bringing Old Man Wang and Grandma Meng into the house.

"Grandma Meng? Why are you here?" Ye Hanhan was surprised. "Xiaobao has already fallen asleep. I'll go call him now."

...

...

"No, no," Grandma Meng said quickly, "We came here in the middle of the night because we didn't want Xiaobao to know."

Ye Han nodded. It seemed that Mr. Wang and Grandma Meng were reluctant to part with their little grandson and wanted to come over to take another look at him.

After all, this might be the last time they see each other.

Ye Xuanhan held a candle and said, "Grandma Meng, Mr. Wang, you two should come with me to take a look. Xiaobao was exhausted during the day and it is impossible to wake him up."

While Old Wang was still hesitating, Grandma Meng nodded impatiently, then pulled her old man's sleeve and followed Ye Han closely.

After opening the wooden door which made a slight creaking sound, the old couple finally saw their little grandson, a frail child, lying quietly on the bed with dried tears in the corners of his eyes.

I don’t know what kind of nightmare I had. I was sleeping very uneasily and most of the quilt fell off.

Grandma Meng stretched out her hand and covered her mouth tightly, for fear of making any sound.

She stepped forward to tuck Wang Xiaobao's back, gently stroked her grandson's face, and her tears couldn't stop flowing.

Mr. Wang behaved relatively restrainedly. His face showed pain, but no tears fell.

Ye Hanhan turned around and left the house so as not to disturb the two elderly people saying goodbye to their grandson.

After about two or three minutes, Grandma Meng and Old Wang walked out of Wang Xiaobao's room with sad faces.

Grandma Meng grabbed Ye Han's hand and said, "Han, thank you, and thank Jiang Wang, and also say thank you to your grandparents for me."

"Grandma, don't say that," Ye Han felt sorry for the two elderly people, "I will visit Xiaobao often in the future. If you have anything to say to him, you can tell me."

Grandma Meng nodded, and then looked at Ye Yanhan with even more gratitude.

"Xianhan girl, come over tonight, I have something I want to tell you."

"What is it?"

"Ye Han, if you go to the capital next time, please help me find Professor Zhang of Capital University. Some of the old man's and my things are at his house," said Grandma Meng, taking out a piece of paper from the pocket of her blue cloth jacket and handing it to Ye Ye Han.

Mr. Wang added: "The address of Professor Zhang's home is on this piece of paper. He lives in the faculty dormitory of Capital University. It is a house allocated to him by the school. You will know it if you ask around."

"Ask him what he wants," Ye Hanhan was a little confused.

"Well, actually, these are some valuable items that my old man and I saved when we were young, as well as my dowry jewelry. When we were framed, we had already noticed it, so we left the items at the home of our best friend, Professor Zhang, and asked him to keep them for us.

There is a list on this piece of paper I gave you, just ask him for it when the time comes."

When Ye Han heard that it was money, he immediately clenched the white paper in his hand, "Grandma Meng, don't worry, I will definitely help you get it. These things are for Xiaobao, right?"

Wang Xiaobao is a nine-year-old child, and there will be many places where money can be used in the future. I believe that Old Wang and Grandma Meng must have taken this into consideration. They feel embarrassed to spend Grandpa Jiang and Grandma Jiang's money, so they want her to get these things back.

"No, half of those things are for you and Jiang Wang, and the other half are for your grandparents."

"This..." Ye Han was helpless, "How can I take your money? Besides, Xiaobao will need money in the future."

Ye Xuanhan only knows how to take ill-gotten gains. As for other people's money, she wouldn't even look at it even if it was placed in front of her.

Grandma Meng said earnestly: "As long as Xiaobao can grow up healthy, it will be fine. If he is capable, he will definitely be able to support himself in the future. If he is not capable, no matter how much money you give him, you won't be able to keep him."

Old Wang echoed, "Han girl, don't say anything else. If I give it to you, it's yours."

Seeing that the two elders were still trying to persuade her, Ye Hanhan glanced at Jiang Wang, and when he nodded to her, she said to the two elders, "Okay then."

Old Wang and Grandma Meng gave Ye Xuanhan some instructions and then went back to the cowshed under the moonlight.

Ye Xuanhan closed the door and said to Jiang Wang, "We don't want the money that Grandma Meng and Old Wang gave us. Let's leave it to Xiaobao in the future."

Jiang Wang nodded, "I thought so too."

At this time, there was a rustling sound coming from Wang Xiaobao's room. Ye Hanhan and Jiang Wang looked at each other and their hearts sank.

The next second, Wang Xiaobao, who had already burst into tears, came out and asked, "Sister Han, are grandpa and grandma gone?"

Ye Xuanhan paused and looked at Wang Xiaobao in surprise, "You weren't asleep just now?"

Wang Xiaobao nodded and said with tears in his eyes: "I don't want grandpa and grandma to worry."

Ye Han looked at Wang Xiaobao who was so sensible, walked up to him and hugged him in his arms, "Xiaobao, it's okay, you will definitely be able to meet your grandparents again in the future."

It is now 1971. Old Wang and Grandma Meng will be rehabilitated in five or six years at the latest. By then they will be in their sixties and have pensions and subsidies. They will definitely be able to meet Wang Xiaobao frequently.

Wang Xiaobao nodded, wiped the tears from her face, and said to Ye Yanhan: "Sister Yanhan, thank you."

Ye Hanhan said nothing and gently stroked Wang Xiaobao's head.

Two days later, the captain delivered various certificates and letters of introduction to Ye Xuanhan.

The information inside was very complete, even the county seal was stamped.

Ye Xuanhan quietly pushed Wang Xiaobao and whispered, "Why don't you say thank you to Uncle Li?"

Wang Xiaobao was very smart. He walked up to the captain, Li Erhe, and knelt down directly, "Uncle Li, thank you."

Seeing this, Li Erhe hurriedly helped him up and said, "Child, don't be like this. I just did what I had to do. You still have to walk the road ahead."

"Uncle Li, don't say that," Ye Hanhan said, "Xiaobao should really thank you. If it weren't for you, I'm afraid he would still be abused by his grandparents."
