Song Hengjue then noticed that Li Nian was following behind Yang Qingheng. His smile faded, and he stepped aside to leave the doorway, saying, "Li Nian is here. Lunch has just been cooked. Let's eat together."
They actually acted quite convincingly.
Yang Qingheng breathed a slight sigh of relief, nodded to Li Nian, then went to the kitchen to wash her hands before coming out to eat, showing no intention of warmly welcoming her guest.
Li Nian wasn't embarrassed at all and served the food to the table as if they were old friends.
Raising an eyebrow and pointing at Xu Changchang across from her, she said, "Oh, you really do look like President Song. Congratulations on the birth of your son, President Song. When will the family reunion ceremony be held?" She really knew how to rub salt in the wound.
The table fell silent for a few seconds, and the atmosphere became strange for a moment.
"If you can't speak properly, then shut your mouth," Song Hengjue said coldly.
Li Nian shrugged, glanced at Yang Qingheng's less-than-ideal complexion, then shifted his gaze to Song Hengjue's face, a smile welling up in his eyes. He reached out and affectionately placed a piece of meat in Xu Changchang's bowl, saying, "Children need to eat more to grow taller."
Xu Changchang pulled the meat out with disgust and innocently looked up at him: "Uncle Li Nian, my dad said it's unhygienic to use your own chopsticks to serve food to others."
Li Nian's smile froze on his face.
These lips must have been produced in the same batch as Yang Qingheng's, right?
Yang Qingheng raised an eyebrow, almost bursting out laughing, and patted her little head approvingly: "Changchang learns so fast, let Auntie get you a new bowl."
Xu Changchang blinked, her fingers clenched in a wronged manner: "Uncle Li Nian, why are you looking at me like that? Did Changchang do something wrong?"
"How could that be? I'm just not naturally inclined to smile." Li Nian forced a stiff smile and took a deep breath.
Xu Changchang's eyes sparkled: "I knew Uncle Li Nian wasn't a stingy person."
In her heart, Song Hengjue was one of her own, so Yang Qingheng, who was with Song Hengjue, was naturally one of her own too. Children are sensitive, and although she didn't know what Li Nian meant, she could tell that Yang Qingheng was unhappy after he said those words, and her protective instincts kicked in immediately.
That clueless brat! Doesn't she know that he and she are on the same side?
For the first time, Li Nian felt that a child could be so cheeky. She gritted her teeth and finally shut her mouth.
The meal ended in an awkward atmosphere.
Yang Qingheng took the children to take a nap, leaving only Song Hengjue and Li Nian in the living room.
"By the way, Mr. Song, if I may ask, when will you be back at work?" Li Nian took a sip of tea and casually asked.
“You know it’s presumptuous of you,” Song Hengjue replied.
Li Nian's expression hadn't been good all day. He gritted his teeth and forced an awkward smile: "I'm just worried about the project you mentioned to me last time. I'm afraid someone else will snatch it away."
What project?
Song Hengjue's fingers paused slightly, his words ambiguous, but his expression remained unchanged: "I said in the meeting that Qingheng would be in charge of the company's affairs. What, are you very dissatisfied with my decision?"
His dark, cold eyes swept over him.
Li Nian's face turned pale, and she subconsciously avoided his gaze: "Of course not, I didn't sleep well last night and my mind was foggy. Please don't take it to heart, Mr. Song."
Song Hengjue didn't answer, staring at him meaningfully for a few seconds: "Sometimes, being too clever for your own good is the stupidest thing to do, Li Nian, don't you think?"
"Mr. Song, you're absolutely right." A fine layer of cold sweat seeped out on Li Nian's neck, but he didn't dare to reach out and wipe it away.
At that moment, all the suspicions I had about Song Hengjue vanished.
